When our pets smell something sweet, they are often inclined to give it a taste test. Unfortunately, that can often lead to them ingesting toxic substances. E-cigarettes have become very common and with the plethora of flavors, our pets’ curiosity can get the best of them. Unfortunately, this can result in the ingestion of the e-liquid, the casing or the battery. Ingestion of any of these things can cause upset stomach, lethargy, decreased appetitie as well as damage to other organs. If you suspect your pet may have ingested or been exposed to any of these things, please have them evaluated immediately!

Have you ever noticed that your dog’s feet tend to have that “sweet stink” Frito-like smell? Unlike humans who sweat all over, dogs only sweat through their feet. This mixes with a harmless bacteria on their paws which creates a smell similar to that of corn chips. While it may be tempting, we suggest sticking to the real Fritos for your chili and leaving your pup's paws alone. 😉

Daisy was here last night with a copperhead bite to the snout. She started her evening off on a wonderful woodland adventure only to find herself in urgent care. Her parents were quick to do the right thing by getting her life saving medical attention. She was very brave and very sweet and pulled through like a champion! She's getting lots of rest now and we hope the very best for all of Daisy's future woodland adventures! Hopefully she has learned that snake is not the same as snack😜

Preparation is key when there is a chance your pet might deal with anxiety. Despite our best efforts to keep our pets calm, they can still experience an anxiety episode. These episodes can lead to reactions out of fear - like escape outside or out of the yard. In efforts to ensure a safe trip back home, please be sure to check that your pet has current information on their collar or microchip.

Ever hear of “Bobcat Fever”? Want to know how to protect your cat?

As we continue to progress through the summer, be aware and informed on the signs and symptoms of Cytauxzoonosis, otherwise known as Cytaux or “Bobcat Fever.” Cytaux is a tick-borne disease, whose natural host is a bobcat that can be passed along to both wild and domestic cats.
Clinical signs usually develop about 10 days after a tick bite. Although the initial signs of this disease are vague and non-specific, some symptoms include;
* Lack of energy *Lack of appetite *Difficulty breathing *Pale gums *Appearing Jaundice * High fever
You can protect your feline family member by keeping them on a tick preventative year round.
If you fear that your cat may have contracted Cytaux, feel free to reach out to us here at LocalVet Urgent Care or your General Practice. When caught early the survival rate is much higher.
For more information about this tick-borne disease, below we have listed a link for your information.
