Due to unfortunate messaging over the years, coupled with a lack of knowledge, and compounded by the human tendency for denial/delusion, what should be obvious and commonly accepted is anything but.

A few of the messages:
-There are no bad dogs, only bad owners. Wrong.
-Any dog can be “fixed” if you’ll get your energy right. Wrong.
-Every dog should be saved. Wrong.

The knowledge gap:
-We have a chaotic house, with lots of kids running all over, and we adopted a highly nervous but “sweet” herding breed. Bad.
-My dog challenges everyone in our family, and has bitten us all, but is great with my trainer. Bad.
-We got a guarding/working breed so it can protect the family, even though we’ve never had a dog before. Bad.

A bit of denial:
-He only bites us when we kiss/dance/move too fast/leave the house/vacuum because he had a traumatic early life. Delusion.
-She’s guards her spot on the couch, her toys, and her food, and will bite us if we get too close, but it’s only because she never had things of her own before. Delusion.
-He always growls at or bites my husband, but I’m sure he was abused by a man before I adopted him. Delusion.

Can people improve? Absolutely. Can dogs improve? Almost always. Does that mean that all fits can be made healthy and happy, or are wise? Nope. People and dogs come in many flavors, and many of these flavors work wonderfully well together, some work with certain other flavors, and some (human and dog) don’t work well at all. It’s a sad reality, but a reality nonetheless. We should be choosing the dogs we share our lives with based on an honest and informed assessment of who we are, what our lives look like, and what dog—both breed and individual personality—fits that reality best.

Ignore the silly messages, do your homework, and lose the denial.

Fairytales in dog land often end up as nightmares.

Hermione is a sweet 5 year spayed old English toy spaniel. She is very sweet, loves treats, snuggles, and the occasional walk. Hermione is was rescued 4 years ago from a shelter. She struggles with anxiety around children but does great with cats and other dogs! She cannot stay in her current home due to her anxiety around children. Hermione has been to a trianer and tried anxiety medication but it is best she goes to a family with no children. She is very well behaved and the trainer she worked with has agreed to do a few trianing session with the new owner and Hermione to get them on the right track.

Up for adoption in Sumner WA.

Simon and Henry are sweet bonded brothers. Happy, healthy and well socialized. They are the remaining two from a rescue litter of 6. They are active and very curious about everything as most kitties are. They love to play and chase their toys when their human tosses it. They can even do acrobats when their human plays with them with a feather on a fishing pole! They could potentially be adventure brothers with the right family/person and training. They like going outside under supervision and watching birds on the TV or in real life. They are extremely affectionate and wherever you are relaxing they want to relax. They are super easy going and low maintenance. They LOVE LOVE meal and snack time! They have not been around dogs or children but could potentially be fine with either if they are cat friendly. They are such sweethearts and would be a wonderful addition to the right household. They are pure joy.

848 Days! That is 2 years and 3 months that sweet Piper has been at our sanctuary waiting for a new home. While we make each day she’s with us a good one filled with love and attention, we are still hopeful that her family is out there.

Piper is blind and had been surviving alone on the streets before we rescued her when she was at risk of euthanasia. She has come a long way with regular training and has practiced sit, stay, shake, leave it, drop it and much more. Piper loves sniffing, chew toys, food puzzles, learning new games, snuggles, and taking in the scents on a nice car ride. She’s a great car companion! Piper is a strong and confident dog, and she would love a strong and confident person who shares her love of learning new things. She would not do well with cats or small children due to the challenges of her vision. UPDATE ADOPTED 😍
Moose

Moose is a 10 month old German Shepherd. He is a really good dog with unlimited potential that has had a really hard life and just needs a family with experienceand patience to help him be the amazing dog that he is. He had been through 5 homes before he came here. One of which we were informed was neglective and abusive. He needs some basic training and time to learn to trust again. He is potty trained and crate trained. He is working on leash training and learning not to use his mouth when playing. He is truly a remarkable dog and a very fast learner. He takes about 20 minutes to warm up to new people but after that he's full of love and kisses. He loves to play fetch, loves other dogs and he is definitely a snuggler. Good with Cats !

He is vet checked, up to date on vaccines, dewormed, Microchipped and will be neutered. Also he has really great confirmation and does not have the usual german Shepherd back slope that cuases hip problems. There are no signs of any hip problems.

This is Filson. He is a 9 month old lab that is looking for his forever home. He loves all people, loves to play fetch and loves other dogs. He is very curious of cats but seems friendly with them. He is a funny boy and will make you laugh and smile every day. He is working on crate training and leash training. He does still jump and has some puppy tendencies to work on still. He has no signs of food agression, no signs of resources guarding and no fear agression.

Filson is vet checked, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and will be neutered.

This beautiful 1yr old male Akita is looking for a forever home. His name is Cheif and he is an extremely social boy who loves all people. He is not like the usual Akita as he does well with anyone and is great when meeting new people. He loves to play, snuggle, go for walks and he is really laid back in the house. He lived in a home with 5 other dogs before coming here so he is able to live in a home with other dogs but this breed can take a while to adjust to new dogs. He lived in a home with 2 cats so he could possibly do it again. He is fully potty trianed and crate trianed. He does sometimes whine for a little while in the crate but he settles down after a while. So far we have seen no signs of any food agression or resource guarding. He takes food and treats very gentle and he is just a gentle giant all around.

He is vet checked, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and will be neutered.

Requirements - fully fenced yard, similar breed experience, no children under 10

This sweet boy is a 9 week old Akita Cane Corso puppy looking for a forever home. He is very mellow and laid back. Both patents were healthy, very social and laid back. Him and his parents were surrendered do to an emergency situation. He is the only puppy left available for adoption. He will be about 90-120lbs full grown.

Hi my name is Wilson ! I am looking for a forever home. I am 2 yrs old and just the sweetest goodest boy! I do prefer the outdoors but I will come inside if you want me to. I love to play, snuggle, follow you around the yard and watch over your home. I am not your usual anatolian shephard as don't bark much and I LOVE people. I am still a bit of a puppy and I forget I'm not supposed to jump or run into people so I wouldn't be the best around children under 10. I can get along with other dogs but I think I would like to be the only dog. I might do well with another big puppy that likes to play and can handle my size. I think cats are cool and they do not bother me. I am hoping to find a family with a big yard that has lots of time to hang out with me and play with me. I am 130lbs so my family will need to have experience with large breeds. I would not be good kept with small livestock as I do not know my size and I like to play.

Hi my name is Nonna! I am a 11 month old Samoyed looking for a forever home. I am a very sweet loving girl and my family was so sad to have to let me go. My family loved me very much but had to let me go because they had to move to a small apartment where I wasn't able to have the home I needed. I would love a home with another dog (or 2 or 3), a fully fenced yard and even a cat. I have am a bouncy girl and I love to play so I will need a home that has time for play & excersise! I am still learning that my looks don't make up for poor manners so I'll need someone who can help teach me not to jump and how to be on my best behavior. I am sweet as could be and wouldn't hurt a fly but I would not be good in a home with little kids as I do tend to jump and not look where I'm going. I am still a puppy so I will need a family with patience but it will be worth it for all the love I have to give.

This time of year take minute to open your eyes and ears. Look closely at all the plastic bags, cardboard boxes and listen when near trash cans. Taz is a 12 week old German Shepherd Husky Rottweiler. He is the happiest little snuggle bug and will make any family happy. He is going to be quite big so he will need a family experienced in training and caring for large breeds. He has surgery this week to repair his 3rd eyelid that was damaged while playing with another puppy. He will be ready to adopt when he's healed. He is completely healthy other than the eye. He will be vaccinated, fully dewormed & microchipped before going to his new home. He is good with all people and all animals.

Hi My name is Angel,
I have had a very hard life in a short amount of time. I'm looking for a family to love me forever but it seems it's hard to find. I have been bouncing from home to home for 2 years. I recently thought I found my forever home but they have come to find out that they do not have time or a stable home for me. They had the surrender me because they could not afford medical expenses that have led to me having to have my tail amputated. My heart hurts that nobody wants me. I promise I am a very good girl and genuinely love people and other dogs. I have tried but do not not do well with cats. I don't require much just a little love and a maybe a walk A-day. I am crate trained but I have a history of being left in crates for extremely long periods of time and this is why my tail has to be amputated.
