UPDATE 2: All evacuation orders have been lifted. Temporary evacuation points will close. Thank you and stay safe.
UPDATE: Residents near Holohan and Laken in South County are also being evacuated due to flooding. Deputies are going door-to-door to notify residents. A temporary evacuation point will be opened at Watsonville Senior Center, 114 E 5th Street.
Due to likely flooding along the San Lorenzo River, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office is evacuating residents in Felton Grove. A temporary evacuation point is being set up at Scotts Valley Community Center.
Find your evacuation zone at community.zonehaven.com. The Santa Cruz County Emergency Operations Center is actively monitoring conditions throughout the county, including stream levels and road impacts.

Paulsen Road and San Andreas Road in South County are also being impacted. Main Street above Bates Creek is also closed due to a tree down with wires.

I used to use this lounging method. Like long lining, if the horse understands it's loading itself, the horse tends to be more agreeable. This method with certain horses has worked in the past for me. Check out the many comments on the reel. You will find all the usual 'holes' in this type of education as any other.
To get a horse to do anything, anything at all, it's about relationship and how you handle the 'ask.' How the horse handles the ask completely depends on the level of fear it has with the situation, its understanding of the surroundings, its fear of the focus of the ask, and its relationship with human involved.
People mistake this technique all the time, thinking just lunge a horse and it will then do the XZY task. Such a broad-based answer is not the answer and leads to many human misconceptions about educating the horse.
The best answer is build trust in your relationship with the horse and let the horse realize it's not in trouble for giving an incorrect answer. When you ask for something, make sure your timing of release is spot on so that your horse understands it gave you the correct answer to the ask. Once you get your timing down, you can load a horse and get the horse comfortably staying in the trailer. Building relationship a horse can trust takes time, faith, and commitment to building your horsemanship skills. The greater reward will be that you will build a horse and a human that can load and trust the process.

As an educator, this page is designed specifically to promote positive discipline. It will not judge the farrier shown in the video. My focus is on why it’s important to take the time to educate the horse on the process, both for the horse's and the human's sake. Lifelong experience has taught me that if the horse owner finds an educator, trainer, or themselves interested in educating the horse instead of forcing the horse to submit, they will be far less likely to need to constrain the horse physically or medically.
Properly educated horses will have okayness and confidence in their role allowing professionals to do their work. A big part of education is understanding. The educator should know that by picking up the horse’s hoof they are asking the horse to give up their defenses. The horse can no longer run away nor easily defend itself. Submitting is scary for a horse.
Picking up a hoof should not be traumatic. You should not need to put humans in danger or always require sedation. Instead, be the teacher, the leader. Take time to help the horse feel okay picking up the hoof. Give them positive experiences instead of traumatic ones. Take time to help the horse understand through consistent practice. Allow them time to work through their fear. Go slowly but with confidence as you practice. Lift the hoof low to the ground, so they don’t feel destabilized. If the horse offers the hoof up high in a reactive manner, relax the hoof in a gentle circular motion until it lowers into a more comfortable position. It will take longer but you are showing the horse they are safe and they can lift the hoof into your care. Working with horses is about relationships and connections. I define connection as, “an okayness and willingness to do what is asked.” Take the time necessary to build relationships for the betterment of your horsemanship and the betterment of horses.
Note: You do not need to tie the tail to the hoof if you take time to educate the horse to feel okay lifting their hoof. Tying the tail can cause injury. I have seen it happen. Tie the horse’s tail in a quick-release knot- to itself, NOT the hoof, if you need the tail out of the way. -Kristin Praly
