🐴 From the Horse’s Point of View: Why Hooking Up the Trailer Matters

I got a great question the other day: “Does the trailer always need to be hooked up during training?”
Short answer? YES. No matter the size—yes, even the really, really big ones.
Why? Because it’s not just safer—it feels safer to the horse.
Try this: hook up your trailer without the e-brake on, and step inside yourself. Notice how much it shifts as you climb in? Now imagine being a 1,000-pound prey animal asked to load into that wobbly, rolling earthquake box. It’s no wonder your horse hesitates.
Now hook it up properly with the e-brake on. You'll feel the difference immediately—stable, grounded, and way less unsettling. Horses of all sizes notice this too.
Even the biggest trailers are engineered to move easily, so unless they’re secured to a truck with brakes engaged, they just don’t feel steady. And a moving floor underfoot? That’s a recipe for reluctance.
Now take that same unhooked trailer, add your horse’s weight, natural claustrophobia, and prey instincts, and you’ve got a very good reason for your equine friend to question your sanity! 😉
So here’s the deal: the first time your horse gives you the benefit of the doubt and steps in—only to find it unstable—you’ve created a learning moment. But not the one you wanted. Because like people, horses might try anything once… asking them to try again after a bad first impression? That’s harder.
So for successful, confidence-building trailer training?
Hook. It. Up.

For 30 years , I have been teaching about the remarkable similarities between human and horse bone structure. This connection reveals a deeper understanding of movement, balance, and biomechanics, helping riders and equestrians appreciate the natural harmony between our anatomy and that of our equine partners.
Through hands-on learning, discussion, and exploration, I guide others in recognizing how these shared structures influence posture, strength, and fluidity, creating a foundation for better riding, deeper connection, and mutual respect between horse and human.

He stands in silence. Without a rider. Without glory. Only an empty saddle and a heavy, hunched body. Before you is a monument to the horse that went through war. His rider did not return. And now he stands as a symbol of all those who fought without a choice, who carried pain, weight, and death on their backs.

This monument is located in Lexington, Virginia. But its meaning is universal. It honors all horses lost in wars — especially during the American Civil War. It’s known as The Riderless Horse. And in its silence, there is more sorrow than a thousand words could express.

This is not just bronze. This is grief. This is honor. This is a memory of those who had no voice, yet served until their final breath. His lowered head is a prayer. His empty saddle is a loss. His posture is a testament to loyalty that asks no questions — it simply goes… until it falls.

We bow not only to the soldiers who fought. We bow to those who carried them — through mud, through fire, through fear… and still moved forward.

Because sometimes, the truest heroes are silent.
