Downtown Fenton circa 1958 ❤️

Robert G. Harris talks about the holiday sidewalk sales in Fenton in the early 1960's. He says, "For years, the annual sidewalk sales had been a proven stimulus for business in town. This year the "Old Fashioned Bargain Days Festival-- Western Style" featured some special entertainment during the Thursday -- Friday event.

"Included was an equestrian drill team, music by segments of the Fenton High School Band, a square dance on Friday night, country music by roving groups and an ice cream social by a church group.

"LeRoy Street, the main thoroughfare through downtown, was closed for the event, and the downtown merchants placed their sales merchandise on the sidewalk in front of their stores. The vacated street became a mall as the outlying merchants set up sales booths down the center of the street. Keeping with the theme, the store sales personnel dressed in the western style.

"As the 'Greater Christmas Shopping Season' began in the Fenton stores, the Chamber announced that starting on November 25th, many of the stores would stay open evenings until 9pm until Christmas. Downtown Fenton assumed a gay Christmas spirit with the Fenton Jaycees putting up greens and decorations on lampposts and across the thoroughfare."
