Albert being his handsome self.

Albert is a gray male cockatiel. Surrendered to us due to owners health. Age is guessed to be about 7 yrs old. He's in liver/kidney failure. We are currently managing with our avian vet. He's been doing great since 2019! His check up is coming up soon. He loves to be talked to and whistle. Most of all, doing his own thing!

Birds are prey animals. When they get startled, and they will, they will take to the sky. That is their DNA. Their nature. It isn't about them trusting you or loving you. So keep them secured when outside on a harness tethered to you (short lead) or in a carrier/back pack. Use only doors with secondary doors ESPECIALLY if you have children coming in and out.

It is getting close to the "season of the lost birds". Many inexperienced finders receive a lot of information from folks meaning no harm or they may even volunteer to take the bird off their hands. This causes delays in getting the birds care they need. While you may think they are fine, they look fine, or "they are so nice!", they are lost and need remedial care and a safe place (safe place refers to no predators, no car or house scents, etc) to be while the parents are located. So we are putting together our first stab at where the bird may be in stages based on how you find them. We started with the worst one first, on the ground. They have a very short amount of time to get them help. Try not to handle the bird once retrieved. Bird rescues are better options for birds rather than shelters.

Bam Bam,
I knew the day was coming. It still is very hard. Its painfully unfair we had to say our final good bye yesterday. You helped mom fight hard. Your kidneys just wouldn't reverse the damage from kidney disease. 8 years old is way too young to have to say good bye. You were the best cuddler, gave the best kisses, made mom laugh, and excepted all and any birds we brought into the The Flying Home Parrot Sanctuary. I love you with all my heart. To say I miss you is an understatement. I'm devastating, hurting, and know we had to let you rest. I love you so much. I'll see you and all the other babies as soon as I can. Xo Mom
