We have had some phone calls regarding fleas. Unfortunately, yes they are terrible this year. While we use our typical speech of making sure everything in the house is cleaned as well as animals treated, sometimes the yard is the culprit. We learned that the pest control companies in town do not have means of treating the outside. However, we have found that Diatomaceous Earth may be helpful in treating the grass. It can also be used indoors.

We're getting an exciting face-lift to the clinic windows today. Lucy and Tj get a front row seat to it all.

The annual Rabies Clinic is coming to the Fire Hall in just a few weeks. See the attached flyer. We will also include other vaccines should your pet need and we will have a price sheet available as a "menu". PLEASE LEASH OR CRATE YOUR PET! It gets quite busy and the last thing we want is a lost pet. Remember cats are the first half hour of Wednesday; be respectful and wait with your dogs in your vehicle until all cats are out of the area.

Parasites are an ongoing hazard to our pets' health and sometimes to ourselves.
Pets are at risk even by just being outside in our own yards. The parasites can burrow into their feet or skin. Pets can then infect themselves by grooming or eating contaminated dirt or stool. Regular testing can help detect these issues sooner.

Antigen testing is new to our clinic:
It is an early and accurate way to test for hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, tapeworms, and cystoisospora. The test detects intestinal parasites by detecting their protein antigen and we can get results within 24 hours using our outside lab. This will be something we recommend doing for routine wellnesses as well as for sick patients who have tummy issues.

Wondering what to do with the ticks ๐Ÿ•ทyou find and how to dispose of them? Here's what we use at the clinic. A small vial filled with alcohol. They're unable to swim and the alcohol dries our their body. Great to have hiking or out at the lake. We call it the tick hotel. Or if you're an Eagles fan "hotel California" because they can check out but never leave ๐Ÿ˜‰

Due to road conditions, Dr. Felland being snowed in, and possible future deteriorating forecast, our clinic will be closed today.

03/22/2024

Regarding the impending weather;
We are still planning to be open Monday. However, the majority of our staff including Dr. Felland, live out of town. We have made arrangements for our current appointments for Monday in case of closure but again plan to be here. I will make an announcement via Facebook, otto as well as our phone voicemail should we close. Keep warm and drive safely!

Defining a Service dog vs Emotional Support dog

Service dogs are trained to perform tasks that directly help the owner with physical, psychiatric, sensory or developmental disabilities. Most commonly, service dogs are used for seeing, hearing, or medical alert. The ADA protects the rights of people with disabilities to bring their service pets to public places including restaurants, shops, hotels, etc. Most importantly service dogs should be well behaved and trained by a certified professional. Often times the organization through which the dog was trained will require copies of vet care to make sure the animal remains healthy to complete necessary tasks for the owner.

Emotional support animals are companion animals who help their owners cope with emotional or mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. They are not expected to adhere any behavior standards or training. They are NOT allowed in public places with the exception of air travel which requires documentation.

Ticks! Yes it has been warm enough for ticks to be out. We typically recommend starting March 1st for preventative medication, but the weather has been mild enough for them to start roaming about. Last year we had 80 cases of anaplasmosis and 23 cases of lyme disease. As a reminder we carry Nexgard, Simparica trio, and Frontline.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. During this month, we help spread awareness of dental disease in dogs and cats and share ways to treat and keep your pet's smile healthy. This year we have booked up with dental appointments for the discount already, but we do offer dental procedures year round.

Unfortunately, a case of Parvo has been popping up in several dogs over the past few weeks. Let's discuss it further to better understand it together.

Parvo is a serious virus that causes loss in the lining of the intestinal tract and weakening of the immune system by attacking the white blood cells. The damage to the intestinal tract causes severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and infection of the bloodstream or septicemia. Septicemia occurs when the bacteria that live in the intestinal tract enter the bloodstream. If septicemia develops, the dog is more likely to pass away.

The primary source of the virus is the f***s in infected dogs. It begins to shed in the stool just before clinical symptoms develop and continues to shed for about 14 days after the symptoms resolve. Susceptible dogs become infected after ingesting the virus. After ingestion, the virus enters the bloodstream, spreading to many areas of the body, mainly the bone marrow and lining of the intestines. The virus is stable in the environment and is resistant to heat, detergents, alcohol and many disinfectants. What does destroy it is a 1:30 bleach solution. **Mix 3/4 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water.**

Due to it's environmental stability, it is easily transmitted through hair, or feet of infected dogs or on shoes, clothing, or other objects contaminated by infected f***s. Direct contact between dogs is not required to spread the virus. Dogs infected with the virus who show clinical signs will usually become ill within 3 to 7 days after exposure.

Clinical signs vary but generally include severe vomiting and diarrhea which typically has a very powerful foul smell, lack of appetite, lethargic or depressed, and fever. Dogs may not even show clinical symptoms.

Parvo is most common in very young puppies less than one year of age. An in clinic test will screen for the virus by testing of the stool. Unfortunately, due to the size of our clinic, treatment here is not ideal as our patients are in close proximity to each other. Parvo is species specific meaning it is not transferred to other species like humans.

Most patients will recover with aggressive treatment of fluid therapy and anti-nausea medications. Vaccinations protect from all strains of the parvo virus and are the best method of prevention against the virus. If your dog is up to date on vaccinations, it is less likely they will become ill to the virus. Breeding dogs should be up to date on vaccinations before breeding; however, pregnant females may be vaccinated with parvo vaccine one week before whelping to transfer high levels of protective antibodies to the puppies.
