Bringing home a shelter pet is one of the most rewarding things you can do—but it’s also a big change for both of you! Here’s what to expect during those first few days and weeks:

1. Adjustment Takes Time ⏳
Your new furry friend may be shy, anxious, or overly excited at first. Be patient—they’re learning to trust and feel safe again.

2. Routine is Everything 🕐
Set regular feeding times, potty breaks, and play sessions to help them feel at home.

3. Vet Visit = Peace of Mind 🩺
Even if they’re up-to-date on shots, a check-up with your own vet is a great first step.

It’s Spotlight Sunday ✨—a day to shine a light on some of our most overlooked pets. These animals may take a little extra time to warm up or need a special kind of home, but they have so much love to give.

Blackjack 🐶 has been with us since December 2023, and he’s one of our absolute favorites. At about 4 years old and 50 lbs, he can come off as shy at first—but spend just a little time with him, and he’ll be your best friend. Blackjack is playful, affectionate, and loyal to his people. He’d do best in a home without small animals or cats, but with the right person, he’s all in.

Graham 🐱 has been waiting since September 2022 for someone to take a chance on him. He’s a shy but sweet 7-year-old with a beautiful grey and white coat. Graham is more comfortable with other cats than with people right now, but we believe that in a quiet home, with a patient and loving adopter, he’ll slowly come out of his shell and show his true personality.

Both Blackjack and Graham are available at Nassau Humane Society and have been waiting far too long. If you’re looking for a loyal friend, they just might be the perfect match. 💙
