Meet Bridget 👋🏼
This older cottontail continues to amaze us with her resilience.
She came in to our care 3 weeks ago after a family cat carried her indoors after an evening outside. She had multiple wound sites which were treated prior to arrival with full strength betadine. Cottontails have extremely delicate skin so this was not helpful. As her wounds were healing she began losing chunks of fur and skin from the betadine exposure. Within the last week she had several abscesses erupt down her spine. She remains in antibiotics as she struggles to recover. We’re hoping that this is the last hurdle for her to overcome in her healing journey that will lead her back to the wild where she belongs.

We responded to a post about some baby squirrels that had fallen from their nest. There was a lot of well intentioned advice given on the post about reunification with mom however this only works in certain scenarios.
If the nest has been destroyed by a storm or removal of the tree it is very likely that the mom will relocate the babies given the chance.

If the tree has been cut down or its right after a storm place them in a box with a heat source near the area they were found…(or ideally attach the box to a near by tree) and monitor if possible.

If the weather has been calm and no trees have been cut recently then it’s likely that something happened to the mom. Baby squirrels fall out of their nest in desperation.
This was the case for these 2 girls. They were very dehydrated and full of fleas and fly strike.
They made it through the night so our hopes are high.

We recently had a large tree massacre in our area. This is a successful reunification of a mom and her babies. We were fortunate enough to have some caring tree cutters alert us so that we could assist. We put the nest with the babies in a box so she could find them. She relocated all 3 of them. Squirrel moms are the best moms. They usually have extra hide outs just in case ❤️. We are relieved that these babies were not orphaned. ❤️❤️❤️

Raccoon calls were off the chart this year.!! 😖 We thought we were over the hump. 😅 We were wrong 😔
One tiny nugget weighing 160 grams days old found in a yard. He’s in an incubator and will be a very time consuming project. Thank you Donna for stepping up to this challenge ❤️
Group of 4 orphaned after mom was trapped and relocated. They’re about 4 weeks old and fortunately seem in good health.
Just a reminder that this is a reality when you trap and relocate wildlife.

We’ve placed ice packs in their hiding boxes to help combat the heat. We will likely release some of them a little earlier than planned for their comfort. This is brutal! 😩

Several sad cases came in yesterday. Oak Park possum with re**al bleeding. We suspect rodenticide. He passed overnight. Another youngster with facial injuries and severe fly strike. He's been cleaned and medicated. We're hopeful. An injured adult with an infected bite wound. Cleaned and medicated and fed. She has a good appetite which is a positive sign. Lastly, 3 wee ones made their way to us from Caso. They escaped in the finders car and crawled up in to their dash. They went to great lengths to retrieve them and drove quite a distance to drop them off. We are grateful to all of the finders regardless of the outcome.

Our blind baby hit the jackpot. Living a dream life at Burgess Shadbush Nature Center. The enclosure is like a fairyland 🥰😍❤️. We’re so happy 💕😊

This youngster came in very small and it became obvious from the start that there were visual defects.
Thank you Lizzie and staff for making the rough start for this baby an amazing opportunity. ❤️❤️❤️

Mom was HBC. There were 4 survivors but this little peanut suffered a degloving injury. We are keeping our fingers crossed that he makes a full recovery

THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY

THE BAD: THURSDAY A Ferndale resident sent out an SOS about a raccoon in a live trap on McDowell street. She could hear the babies crying from the tree where they lived. Unfortunately we did not get to the location in time to intervene and the mom was removed by the pest control company.

THE GOOD: Shout out to Mike the tree cutter who is always willing to assist. 5 babies rescued from their tree nest. Shout out to our team member Donna who is a warrior with a huge heart for taking them in. They will likely be with us until August

THE UGLY: Most of these trapping companies have no heart. It’s a business and it’s only and always about money. They will tell you that they release but the TRUTH: they EUTHANIZE. These 5 raccoon kits were unnecessarily orphaned. Please keep this in mind when hiring these companies. Nobody wants wildlife residing in their house. (This family was living in a tree) We understand this. But there are humane ways of evicting. Please reach out to wild life Rehabber’s for guidance. We are always happy to give FREE tips and advice.

This little bear cub was trapped in a furnace in Ferndale with her mama. Sadly, her mama passed, but Kim from Compassionate Critter Removal brought this baby right over. We’ve named her Fern ❤️. We are so grateful the homeowner’s contacted Kim for help and for Kim’s caring expertise in pest removal. She’s a one in a million gem!

What we are at MCPR:

PLEASE KNOW that when you call us at 10pm with an injured/orphaned animal we are not angry. We are just tired but we love you for caring

PLEASE KNOW that we do not have the man power to pick up. It may take you an hour or 2 of your time to deliver to us but it will take us several months to treat and release. We just ask that you to do your part.

PLEASE KNOW that when we opt for euthanasia it is never an easy decision. And it is never about human emotion. It is ALWAYS 💯 about what is best for the animal.

PLEASE KNOW that everything we do comes from the heart. We do not get paid for our services. It is impossible for us to NOT care.

HAVING SAID ALL OF THIS…it’s baby season. We are overwhelmed, sleep deprived, hungry and cranky. Give us a break, give us a hand, or better yet…give us a bottle of wine 🍷 😂❤️
