Our wish? To be able to help them all. Reality? There are lucky ones…. This gorgeous little guy came to Dr. Monroe with an injured paw that was infested with maggots, severely infected, and swollen about 3 times normal size. In addition he was very underweight and had a horrible case of ear mites. His name is now Maverick and he getting all of the care he needs and deserves!!! Welcome to our foster kitten program Mav. A note from Dr. Monroe about ear tipping feral cats.... I frequently encounter concern from caretakers about "ear tipping" feral cats. The number one question... "Does it hurt?" All feral cats receive pain medication at the time of surgery. I feel the ear tip is not any more painful than the spay (complete ovariohysterectomy) or the neuter (removal of both testicles). I feel the term spay and neuter is so well known today that the actual procedure and pain associated with it, is often overlooked or not considered at all. An ear tip is just what the term "says".... the top triangle tip portion of the ear (typically the left ear) is removed. Why do we do this? The ear tip is the universal symbol that a feral cat has gone through a TNR (trap neuter return) program indicating it is spayed or neutered. You can visualize the ear tip at a glance without having to handle the cat. This is important, especially for those of us who provide TNR services to these cats. One example, if a cat has been trapped and it has an ear tip it can be released vs transported and anesthetized, only to find that it is already altered. Another example, is if you have a feral cat residing on your property and you see it has an ear tip you know it is spayed or neutered, thus, no issues with breeding or unwanted kittens. Below is a picture of a kitten after its ear tip procedure. You will see the small "tip" of ear. My hope is too inform the public and to reduce the resistance of ear tipping. To take part in our FERAL25 Program Spay Neuter Northwest requires an ear tip.

These amazing feral Whatcom County cats were provided services through the Spay Neuter Northwest FERAL25 Program. Thank you to their caretakers for helping improve the lives of these cats. The cost is $25. Services include spay neuter, ear tip, rabies vaccination, and Revolution application. Email us at [email protected] for more information or to schedule an appointment. Additional financial assistance may be available. Whatcom County cats only.

Dr. Monroe, Rhonda, and SNNW staff are committed to Whatcom County feral cats. The numbers of kittens born to feral cats in this county is staggering. These kittens put a huge burden on the local humane society and local rescues. The suffering we see is mentally exhausting. The lucky ones get care and forever homes. The others either succumb to disease and predators or grow to add to the problem. Remember one thing.... This starts or started as a human problem. The cats are just doing what they need to do to survive.... and they breed and breed and breed.... We see the problem. We live the problem. We stay committed to these cats. We ask the community to be committed too. We won't fix it overnight but we will continue our efforts to improve the lives of these amazing cats.

Let's stop normalizing "kitten season" through community collaboration of spaying and neutering Whatcom County cats. Here at Spay Neuter Northwest we say "No Excuses". We have it covered!!! SNNW provides services for both domestic and feral cats and we are affordable, BUT, if needed, we work with local organizations who provide spay/neuter financial assistance.
