Here is a great use of Fernley Chamber of Commerce funds. The Chamber usually has one college and one trade available but no trade applications were received this year. Two college scholarships were awarded.

Honored to award scholarships to two fabulous young women, Ashlyn Bertok and Kiriann Johnson. Congratulations on our achievements and wishing you the best on your next chapter.

Thank you to the Fernley Chamber of Commerce members who support our events and allowing our membership the opportunity to support our community.

KHH Rory Duncan (“Rory”) was started correctly by Lazy Sousa Mountain Meadow Ranch. He’s still the biggest and tamest of our fold. He’s always the consummate showman and was the hit of the Great Basin Scottish Highland Games this weekend.

Welcome Aberlour (we’ll go with Abe for short) our newest addition to the Corkscrew’s Scottish Highland fold. He’s a 68-pound bull calf born yesterday. His registered name will be Corkscrew Aberlour Rory. He’s taking a break from nursing and sunning himself. He’ll be dark red like his mama.

Long post, but a good story:

I had noticed earlier in the week that I could see Skye’s udders. Since our bull runs with the cows full-time, we don’t have the benefit of calving windows - just signs from knowing the animals. She’s been fatter for a bit so I figured she was getting close to calving.

I was mowing the lawn behind the house and I noticed the cows paying attention to a wet spot down in the corral. I had just irrigated last night so I thought it was just a wet spot where the water had leaked in but every cow stopped to smell it. I’m glad I went to look at it because it was mucus so I kept an eye on the corral. About 10 minutes later (I have pics for all of this, but should I tempt the Facebook gods?). So I kept an eye on her and finished mowing.

Skye walked around a lot and was up and down a lot like a first-time mom. However after the calf’s nose and tongue (without hooves) were out for about an hour, I decided to put the gloves on and see if the calf was positioned correctly. When I reached in, the right foreleg was bent at the knee and I couldn’t find the left foreleg and the shoulders were bound up and just weren’t going to squeeze by mama’s bones. Skye got agitated and got up, so I ran to get the chain and sterilize it. I waited for her to lay down, got the right shoulder by mama’s bone, hooked the chain to the foreleg with the double slip knot (thanks internet) to minimize damage, and told Skye we needed one more big push with my foot on her ass. We got the calf out to its hips and she did the rest. Mama and baby are doing great. Here’s one SUPER glamorous pic of my life after irrigating for 17 hours and then laying in the dirt, but also of new life. Wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Brushed him out one last time. I’m glad he’s already starting to blow his undercoat because he’s headed to a new home in Vegas in about an hour. Hard to part with the firstborn of the Corkscrew Ranch, but Barra is off to do what bulls do!

"Barra" is a bull born on April 28, 2020. He is pretty tame and will follow you around. He loves being scratched and brushed. He's registered with the American Highland Cattle Association (AHCA) and his AHCA information is "Corkscrew's Barra Rory" #61415. Barra was our first calf born on-site and we hate to part with him. Barra's sire and dam are medium sized. Barra is priced at Twenty-Eight-Hundred. Delivery in the general area can be arranged. Attached is a current photo of Barra as well as some photos throughout his time here.

Good info for horse owners.

Good info for horse owners.

As many know, Pigeon Fever has been ravaging our geographical area and affecting our horses for the last couple of years. MANY in the horse population have had abscesses, and MANY MORE have been exposed. We are aware that there are questions and concerns regarding a possible vaccination. AT THIS TIME, the Pigeon Fever vaccine for horses IS NOT LICENSED and is ONLY conditionally approved.

At this time, we are NOT recommending the vaccine. The previous vaccine caused a significant amount of colic. There are a number of concerns with this vaccine, including colic, abscess formation at insertion site, fever, anaphylaxis, purpura hemorrhagica, and causing the disease unknowingly if the horse has elevated titers and has previously been exposed. There are NUMEROUS precautions that need to be taken with this vaccine and side effects/adverse effects can be dire and possibly fatal.

At Comstock Equine Hospital, we have a board-certified internal medicine specialist on staff, and our team is happy to answer any questions that you may have. Our goal is to keep your horse happy and healthy and provide you with peace of mind with any questions that you may have!

We’re saying goodbye to Barra next Saturday. He was our first Scottish Highland born at our place. Whenever we show pictures of a Highland calf, it’s him. He was so darned cute as a calf. Now he’s grown into a muscular bull and is headed to Veritas Island, a glamping place between Woodland and Clearlake. He’ll get all the grass he can eat and he’s got a cow of his very own on the way as well……..
