Sometimes the best part of being an equine vet is the unexpected help you get on the job! 👩‍⚕️🐴

Had a few lameness exams with two very dedicated assistants — one dog and one cat — who took their supervisory roles very seriously.
🐶✨ The dog made sure every trot-up and flex was properly observed.
🐱👀 The cat made sure that we made no mistakes!

Horses may be our patients, but it definitely takes a whole barn family to get the job done. ❤️

Does Your Horse Have Ulcers? 🐴💭

What Are Ulcers?
Gastric ulcers are painful sores in the lining of the stomach or intestine.

Common Causes:
🔥Acid exposure: Horses’ stomachs make acid 24/7 — if they go too long
without hay or grass, that acid can damage the stomach lining.
😬Stress: Training, trailering, changes in routine, or herd dynamics can
all increase ulcer risk.
Signs to Watch For:

⚠️Poor appetite (especially skipping grain)
⚠️Drop in performance or attitude changes
⚠️Dull coat or weight loss
⚠️Mild colic or abdominal sensitivity (girthiness)

Diagnosis & Treatment:

The only way to diagnose gastric and pyloric ulcers is by doing a gastroscope (passinga tiny camera in the stomach). Treatment depends on the type and severity of ulcers — but early intervention makes a big difference!

dealt with ulcers? Tell us your experience below!

At Advanced Equine, our veterinarians don’t just care for horses—they care deeply about the future of horsemanship.
We’re incredibly proud of Dr. Frederick and Dr. Haspel for going above and beyond their daily work to give back to the horse community in truly meaningful ways. Whether it’s teaching emergency care workshops, being a part of summer camp sessions, or judging kids’ horsemanship shows—these two show up with passion, knowledge, and heart.
They don’t just treat patients—they inspire horse kids, empower young riders, and spark curiosity about equine care. And honestly? We think that’s pretty amazing. 💙🙌

Our Story

Advanced Equine was established in 2015 as an internal medicine specialty practice and has expanded since. We now offer specialty, referral and primary care veterinary medical services throughout the Hudson Valley, NY and western Connecticut. On-Farm and in-hospital appointments are available.

Dr. Frederick's ACVIM specialty certification involved four additional years of training (after veterinary college) in areas such as critical care, infectious disease, metabolic conditions, organ dysfunction and performance limiting issues.

Dr. Christine Whalin has years of experience working with performance sport horses in the Hudson Valley. She has completed a residency in Equine Veterinary Practice bringing an expertise in medical and surgical care to the area.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.
