Only a couple more days until our big Doney Park sale! I've been saving my best stock for this event! I'll have 5 species of Penstemon, evening primrose, blue flax, 2 species of blanket flower, bee balm, sacred datura, nodding sunflower, buckwheat, brickellia, columbine, and so much more! Here's a photo of our native Arizona valerian growing in my garden. It's an early bloomer that gives the pollinators a nice spring feast when there isn't much blooming. Thanks to JT of TerraBIRDS for his amazing iPhone photography skills!

Did you know that bees have little "saddlebags" that they'll fill up with pollen to bring back to the hive? I actually just saw this when I was collecting some seed for a restoration project on Tuesday. It was so cool!

Penstemon barbatus or scarlet beard tongue is one of the longest lasting native Penstemons to landscape with. It does well under the pines and is one of the first flowers to bloom in early summer. Plus, the hummingbirds LOVE it! I don't have very many so get them before they're gone! I've been growing them for years. Photo from wikimedia commons.

Here's another species of blanket flower that I will have at the sales this weekend. This species will get bigger than the other one that I will have for sale. Check out the bee going in for a landing in the picture. What a great plant for attracting pollinators to your yard!

Mexican hat can be yellow, red, or a combination of both. Here are some from my garden. The next generation of this plant will be available at the Doney Park Farmstand and at this Sunday's Flagstaff Community Market. Now is a great time to plant! The rains are coming next week!

This is the one of mother plants for the yellow Mexican hat that I grew. It's from my garden in Shadow Mountain. It is a showy addition to the native plant garden, especially with just a little bit of supplemental water. They are tough plants and look nice in a cut flower arrangement.

This little cutie is called red dome blanket flower. It is one of our true native Gaillardia species. I will have some available tomorrow at the Doney Park Farmstand and at Sunday's Flagstaff Community Market. Now is a great time to plant! The rains are coming again next week.

Do you know that waiting for monsoon season and planting into early autumn is optimal for adding native plants to your garden? It helps to conserve water and puts less stress on your plants. We waited until last week to install this native seed increase field of squirrel tail grass that will be used for habitat restoration.
