Dr.Bruchman just got back from a fabulous class improving her equine dental knowledge. We are so blessed to have a wonderful referral facility, Chaparral Equine, to not only be able to send our patients to but also a place to get great education courses for vets all over the country.
Dr. Bruchman is dedicated to bring elevated dental services to the horses of Northern Arizona and staying current in education and learning from the top instructors in the country is just one way she can do that.

We had a great time yesterday at the Festival of Science teaching young minds about dentistry in our pets.
It is so exciting to see the next generation getting so excited about all things science and we were honored to be a part of it!

We have been out in the field this week taking numerous foot xrays for our equine patients. Foot xrays are so important to help diagnose sources of pain and also to help guide farriers on designing a great trim and shoeing plan for that individual horse. Here are just two of our bestest circus ponies showing off their balancing skills for their xrays.

We just can't get over how cute our patients are! Aren't puppies just the BEST?!

We love to provide young horses with their first oral exam and float to get them off on a great oral health path!
Horses should have their first oral exam between the ages of 1.5 and 2 years of age and then examined every 6 months until they have all their adult teeth present in their mouth at age 5.
Young teeth are softer and sharp points form more quickly so we need to keep them well floated especially when being started under saddle and with a bit in their mouth!
Wolf teeth can interfere with bit placement and should be removed prior to introducing a bit in a young horse mouth.
Check out these huge wolf teeth we found this week!

Can you imagine the airflow difference on each side of this nose?
The left side is the before and demonstrates a stenotic nare, very common in brachycephalic breeds.
The right side shows the nostril immediately after laser surgery to open up the airway to allow the patient to breathe easier.
Laser surgery is a fabulous way to help our patients breathe easier while providing faster healing times and a blood-less surgery option.

Dental disease is painful! Can you see those really sharp points and the cuts in to the cheeks because of them? Every time this horse eats those cheeks are getting cut... can you imagine?!
Horses put up with a lot of pain and it is our job as their caretakers to minimize their silent suffering.
Horses need dental exams and floats at a minimum of every 12 months. Young horses and horses like in this picture with dental abnormalities need more frequent exams and floats.
NOW is the time to schedule your horse for an exam in order to get that mouth comfortable and functioning well before winter gets here.

We are saddened to hear about the tragedy with a feed mix up this week that led to the death of 70 horses in Oklahoma. This is not the first time that this kind of feed mix up has led to the death of horses so we as owners should be educated and choose our feeds wisely! Ionophores are used in livestock feed to improve feed utilization and prevent coccidia infections. Ionophores even in very small doses are toxic to horses. We need to make sure we are buying our horse feeds from companies that use Ionophore FREE facilities. Know the difference between Ionophore FREE and SAFE as they are not the same!
If you have other livestock on your property we urge you to make sure all the feeds are locked up so your horses can not accidentally consume feeds meant for other species.
If you have any questions about the feeds you give to your horses you can set up an exam and consult by visiting our website!
Brachycephalic breeds commonly have stenotic nares (pinched off nostrils) which drastically decrease airflow. Imagine trying to breathe while pinching your nose!
We are so fortunate to have one of the only surgical lasers in Northern Arizona so we can open up these nostrils with no blood loss! Immediate relief!
Check out the progression of this cute little nose.

We love teeth at this hospital! But what we don't love is when they are causing our patients pain.
This sweet older horse was diagnosed with EOTRH and had significant pain from these front incisor teeth.
After xrays to confirm the diagnosis the teeth were all removed while the horse was standing. This procedure can be performed in the comfort of your property as we have mobile stocks!
If you want to know more about EOTRH and how to tell if your horse might be affected visit our website www.mycawc.com

It is always a surprise when we look in a mouth! This horse held a big surprise and appears to have had some facial trauma since the last dental exam. There are numerous teeth that need to be extracted. Does the tooth marked with the arrow need to be removed?

βοΈIn an effort to protect human health against the Rabies virus the CDC has instituted a new protocol for dogs entering the U.S. after August 1st 2024. Though there will be a transitional period while we all try to navigate this there are a few things you can do proactively to prepare for this change. This will be most important for those who know they intend to travel with their dogs out of the country, including driving through Mexico and Canada. Check out this link for more information and schedule an appointment if you need help navigating this change!

We have been out in the field a lot lately taking xrays of our equine patients to help diagnose sources of pain and lameness.
Xrays are also so important for your farrier to help them make sure your horse has the best foot to carry that big body comfortably.
