Sedated oral exams on horses are SO important! In order to perform a thorough oral exam on a horse there needs to be 4 key components: sedation, a speculum to hold the mouth open, a bright light and a mirror!
Without these components so much of the oral exam is missed!
This is an example of a diastema which is a gap between the teeth. This gap leads to hay being packed in and further widening the space, creating periodontal disease. This is very painful to horses! Periodontal disease is the most common disease we see in the mouth.
There are many different ways to treat periodontal disease and the second picture shows how we filled that diastema to prevent further feed packing.
