Born and raised in Tempe, Arizona, Dr. Kamper discovered his love for pet care at an early age, surrounded by a variety of companions ranging from hamsters to dogs and even boa constrictors. His affection for horses grew while assisting with his older sister's Arabians. Opting to stay in his home state, Dr. Kamper completed his undergraduate degree at Northern Arizona University, actively participating in muscle physiology research focused on the molecule titin. A proud alumnus of Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine (Class of 2019, Geaux Tigers!), Dr. Kamper embarked on a field care internship with Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, KY. This experience included rotations through surgery and medicine departments. Following his role as an associate in Kentucky, he made the decision to move back to Flagstaff, bringing him closer to family in the Southwest. Beyond the typical veterinary school experiences of attending football games and relishing Cajun cuisine, Dr. Kamper dedicated weekends and holidays to working as a technician in the large animal hospital. Summers were occupied with research projects, delving into equine stem cell therapy or exploring blueberry feed supplementation. Additionally, his involvement as a national board member of the Veterinary Business Management Association led him to traverse the country attending veterinary conferences. Dr. Kamper's expertise spans ambulatory equine practice and small animal care, with a specific passion for diagnostic imaging, including radiography and ultrasonography. Outside the realm of veterinary medicine, he enjoys exploring nature alongside his Great Dane, "Mo" and Jack Russel " Opal", indulges in restoring vintage American muscle cars, nurtures his growing houseplant collection, and treasures moments spent with family.

🐾🌟 April is National Heartworm Awareness Month! 🌟🐾

Did you know that heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition that affects our beloved furry friends? 🐢❀️

Heartworms are transmitted through mosquito bites and can infect dogs, cats, and other mammals. It take only one bite to infect your pet. Prevention is key in keeping our pets safe and healthy!

Here are a few tips to protect your furry family members:

1️⃣ Ensure your pets are on a regular heartworm prevention program prescribed by your veterinarian.
2️⃣ Keep your pets indoors during peak mosquito times, usually dawn and dusk.
3️⃣ Schedule regular check-ups with your vet to monitor your pet's health with yearly heartworm tests and discuss heartworm prevention.

Spread the word and help raise awareness about the importance of heartworm prevention! Together, we can keep our pets happy and healthy for years to come. πŸΎπŸ’–

As the snow begins to melt and monsoon season will soon be upon us, Thrush is something we all need to be on the lookout for. Check out this article for some tips and tricks in controlling thrush in horses. .

πŸ‘‰ What is Equine Thrush?

Thrush is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the frog of the hoof. It thrives in moist, dirty environments and can cause discomfort and lameness if left untreated. Recognizing the signs early is crucial for effective treatment.

πŸ” Signs of Equine Thrush:

Foul odor emanating from the hoof
Black, tar-like discharge in the frog clefts
Softening and deterioration of the frog tissue
Reluctance to bear weight on the affected hoof

πŸ› οΈ Treating Equine Thrush:

~ Cleanliness is Key: Regularly clean your horse's hooves, paying particular attention to removing dirt and debris from the frog area.
~Keep Hooves Dry: Ensure your horse's living environment is clean and dry, minimizing the risk of bacterial growth.
~Topical Treatments: There are various over-the-counter thrush treatments available, such as antifungal and antibacterial hoof products. Consult with your veterinarian to find the most suitable option for your horse.
~ Proper Hoof Trimming: Regular farrier visits are essential for maintaining hoof health. Trimming away excess frog tissue can aid in treating and preventing thrush.

Thrush in horses can cause chronic foot problems and lameness unless treated.
