Taking a moment to appreciate the fact that EVERY time we climb on the back of a horse, even with all it’s beauty and grace, it is a decision that comes with many risks. Embrace the blessings of trust and freedom, but never take it for granted. Prayers for her family and her trainer. ❤️

Full Circle Stables is excited to announce we have a new face around the barn! Meet Kaitlyn Elizabeth Sophia Reese! Kaitlyn had accepted a “Student Trainer Apprenticeship” with us! She’s currently a Junior at Morehead State University studying for her degree in Equine Sciences. Kaitlyn has experience assisting in the colleges breeding program, as well as riding English and Western disciplines . She is excited to begin her journey learning how to handle and train, young and green horses from the ground up. She will play an active role in handling the horses in and out of the stable, helping keep horses worked and overall barn maintenance on the weekends. Glad to have you aboard as part of the barn family! 🤠

We are expecting some harsh winter weather and temps soon in KY. Many horse owners are scrambling to prepare themselves and their animals for the temperature dropping more than 40° in the span of a just a few hours. Because it will likely rain before temps plummet, if you are able to do so you may want to bring your horses inside before the rain or dry them off before the temps drop, however most healthy horses with a good thick winter coat stay dry near the skin. Sometimes drastic changes in management can cause anxiety for your animals, and dramatic changes in diet can cause colic as well. If the horses have a good place to get out of the wind and precipitation the greatest key to keeping them warm the natural way is…
Forage. More forage. Quality forage.

Good hay, in very plentiful amounts, well in advance of the weather and throughout, will help your horse most of all. It will help him replace calories spent in the cold. It will help him have the energy to move around and generate heat. It will help him fill up his gut in a healthy way and generate the most heat with his internal furnace.

If you think you may be stranded at home and won’t be able to get to your horse on Friday then try to find a way to provide enough hay to last until roads are clear. Unlimited free choice hay is best if there are no diet restrictions. You can help ration it slightly by using slow feed hay nets for those with dietary restrictions, or provide both loose free choice and well stuffed slow feed hay nets. Make sure it is spaced enough so that groups of horses can all eat in peace. In this photo many bales were put out throughout the pasture but friends chose to dine in company. Often times if it’s the only shelter folks want to put hay in run in sheds but this can create resource guarding for groups of horses, and fighting can result in injuries.

They will need access to water as well, if you won’t be back soon due to dangerous weather you can pile manure around the water source to try to generate heat to keep it from freezing. If horses must be locking in stalls that you may not be able to come back to you may want to leave a water source larger than average buckets that can freeze solid. A new clean muck bucket or one scrubbed and bleached clean, or a small water tank in the stall may be needed, so that if you are away for more than 24 hours a thirsty enough horse may be able to break the top of the ice by pawing to get to water under the surface. You can offer your horse warm water you’ve packed to his stall or pasture to further encourage hydration and hopefully prevent colic HOWEVER we do NOT RECOMMEND heated water buckets inside barns or sheds, as these can malfunction causing a fire and potential loss of your equine friends.

A little salt added to the regular ration can encourage drinking, or you can opt for a product like Hydration Hay to help. Feeding large meals they aren’t used to, like bran mashes isn’t really recommended either because the dramatic change in food is more likely to cause colic than prevent it.

It’s a good time to check in on your neighbors and be kind. If you are mobile and able perhaps offer to help put out hay or remove ice for those less mobile, but be safe and keep your skin covered when frostbite is possible. Perhaps also chat with neighbors and friends to give them a heads up if you may need to call in a favor soon if you’ll need help with your own animals. May everyone be safe and may your horses bellies be full with warming roughage in the coming weather event.
