๐ Dog of the Week! ๐
This gal earned her spot on the chart! Miss. Julep just completed a two week board and train program here at The Retreat with Family Favorite Canine. Her training was just wrapped up with a few at-home lessons to ensure that even in the home environment she would be able to maintain her focus! And she knocked it out of the park!
โค๏ธ She went home understanding how to place, sit, stay, stand, leave it, leash walk, down, and more! When she wasnโt in focused training she was enjoying play time and socialization with her new friends! Itโs amazing to watch positive reinforcement and consistency come together to produce such a wonderful result! In the words of Family Favorite Canine, โshe had the right setup to achieve more in two weeks than what most can in four.โ
๐ฅณ She is certainly blessed to have a family that is committed to the best life for her and her sister, Molly. We are so thrilled that they are a part of our retriever & Retreat family!

These sweeties were such a pleasure to raise over the last 8 weeks! We dedicated many, many hours to ensuring that not only were they prepared for the new life ahead, but that each family also had the tools and knowledge necessary to set them up for success! ๐ฟ๐๐ฑ No Grass Policy? ๐ฑ๐๐ฟ
I know you all have seen itโฆ. Those cute little baby puppies running through the yard. We all say, โawwww, how cuteโ and we never think about the lurking dangers.
For a reputable breeder, these dangers should be at the top of their list of things that are easily avoidable.
๐คข Parvo, hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, leptospirosis, coccidiaโฆ and the list goes on - are all found in the soil and can be easily contracted by a puppy that hasnโt been fully vaccinated.
If puppies are allowed to wonder around grassy, muddy, or dirt filled areas, they are at risk. During the first 8 weeks that a puppy is in the care of a breeder, they will typically only receive their first vaccination against distemper & parvo around 6 weeks of age. This single vaccination does NOT protect them entirely. Remember, other than the small amount of antibodies they received from mom, their immune system is immature, and they donโt have the capability to fight off infection and disease. This is why puppies get a series of vaccinations scheduled two to three weeks apart. That immune system needs a boost!
โค๏ธ Unless a breeder knows with absolute certainty that no stray dog and no unvaccinated dogs have been on that grass for several years - taking them out onto it should be a hard NO!
๐ฉท This is why we have a โno grassโ policy with our pups. Unless itโs a hard surface area that can be disinfected entirely, itโs an absolute no-go. We want to know with 100% certainty that there was never a chance of any pup contracting any of these nasties while in our care!!

Iโm going to do my best not to step on any toes about this touchy subjectโฆ.but some things just deserve to be said. ๐ฅด And Iโve realized over the years that on occasion, youโve got to swallow the lump in your throat and speak up (even when itโs hard). Iโm sorry for the lengthy post aheadโฆ
Knowledge is power! As you guys know, we have the luxury of seeing both sides of the story when it comes to puppy buying. We have our breeding side of it, where we try to go above and beyond what is expected, with the goal ALWAYS being in the best interest of our pups. And we also have The Retreat side, where we have thousands of different dogs and families from all walks of life.
One phrase that weโve heard more times than we can count is, โI saved this dogโ, or โI rescued this puppyโ. Thatโs great, right? But then, the conversation goes on, and the families actually paid money to a so-called โbreederโ for this โrescue dogโ. ๐ค
We get itโฆ.we are all dog-people! Everyone that we meet through our business are dog-people! And we know that all of these puppies and dogs pull at our heart strings and our first thought when we see the living environment, the lack of care, or multiple other expectant dogs running around is, โI can save just oneโ. Or you get the other response of, โwe went with this pup because it was cheapโ.
The question is, What are we supporting here? In all reality, making a purchase from these type of people and environments is only making the problem bigger. As long as they sell a couple of pups from the litter, they will continueโฆand never mind the rest of the pups that get dropped off at the shelter (whose facility is already overflowing). You didnโt save one dog, you provided exactly what they needed in order to continue a bad operation (which usually includes cross-breeding dogs that may or may not be compatible).

We were so busy playing that we let Catherine do all of the hard work and we didnโt get near as many pics ourselves as we normally do! But seeing hers will definitely be worth the wait! Until thenโฆhereโs a little video of Cooper, who really liked the peanut butter bubbles!
