If you’re a pet healthcare professional advising puppy owners to delay microchipping because “the needle is too big and it hurts,” you may need to reassess your approach.

Either you should find a different profession that doesn’t challenge your comfort level, or take the time to properly learn how to microchip a puppy with minimal stress and discomfort.

Microchipping is a quick, vital procedure that significantly increases the chances of a lost pet being reunited with its owner.

Spreading fear or hesitation around it due to your own discomfort does a disservice to the pets and owners who trust your expertise.

Question: Why don’t you let children come up and pet your dog in public?

Answer: I always prioritize safety for both the child and my dog. Unfortunately, not all children are taught how to properly approach and interact with dogs, which can lead to unintended harm or stress for both parties.

Since I can’t assume that every child knows the correct way to behave around dogs, my answer is always “Sorry, no.”

It’s better to err on the side of caution and ensure a positive experience for everyone involved.

This also gives me the opportunity to educate the child and their parents on how to safely and respectfully interact with dogs in the future.

I firmly believe that if you’re going to teach or guide others on how to improve their lives, you should be a living example of what you preach. It’s about credibility and experience.

No, I wouldn’t take parenting advice from someone who doesn’t have children.

No, I wouldn’t want weight loss advice from someone blessed with perfect genetics who has never struggled with their weight.

No, I wouldn’t want addiction counseling from someone who’s never battled addiction.

And no, I don’t want a dog trainer helping my dog who can’t even manage their own.

I want advice from someone who has walked in my shoes, who understands my challenges, and who has overcome them.

It’s not just about knowledge; it’s about empathy and real-life experience. Without that, the guidance feels hollow and disconnected from the reality of what it takes to achieve my goals.

For those who have been in the dog training industry long enough, you’ve likely witnessed the extreme shifts in training philosophies over the years.

These drastic approaches, whether from the mid-20th century or today, have often led to more confusion than clarity about how to properly train dogs.

What was considered effective decades ago wasn’t necessarily right, and what’s trendy now isn’t inherently correct either.

So, what is the right approach?

The key lies in helping dog owners make meaningful, positive changes within themselves while also guiding their dogs to do the same.

It’s not always popular to tell someone they need to work on themselves to achieve the results they want with their dog, but it’s the truth.

Most dog owners aren’t interested in the technical details of how a trainer achieved results; they just want the outcome they paid for.

However, if they don’t grasp the basic principles behind what the trainer did, they won’t be able to replicate those results.

Worse, their dog’s behavior might deteriorate due to the owner’s frustration.

True training isn’t just about formal sessions. It’s about everyday interactions—what we allow and what we don’t.

Lasting change only occurs when these new behaviors become a consistent part of daily life. That’s why I believe in educating the owners as much as I train the dogs.

After all, I won’t always be there to hold the dog accountable, but the owners will be.

With this approach, you’re not just training a single dog—you’re empowering their owner to replicate the techniques on their own.

By doing so, you reduce the need for constant trainer involvement. I know this may not be popular with some trainers, but I assure you there will never be a shortage of dog owners who need our help.

Our goal should be to ensure that the owners we do assist are equipped to continue growing and managing their dog’s behavior independently.

Got a question this morning, so I’m sharing insights on selecting a puppy for protection dog training vs. acquiring an older, trained dog.

Not all dogs are fit for protection work. It starts with purpose-bred lines where temperament, drive, and stability are prioritized.

Even within well-bred litters, only a few puppies might have what it takes, identified through early evaluation for traits like nerve strength and resilience.

Training a puppy demands years of commitment, starting with obedience and advancing to specialized skills. Many dogs, even with potential, might not succeed.

Alternatively, acquiring an already trained dog might be better for some. The key is understanding the demands, setting realistic expectations, and consulting with professionals to guide your decision.

We saw significant progress from Tasha and her owner during this week’s class. Tasha has been set in her ways, as she’s always had free rein to do as she pleases. By enhancing her owner’s communication skills, we were able to address the root causes of what makes her seem stubborn.

I’m compelled to speak out once again about the harmful practice of supporting backyard breeders. Too many people are unknowingly contributing to this problem by acquiring puppies from individuals who lack the proper knowledge and responsibility to breed dogs ethically.

Acquiring a puppy from someone who isn’t educated in responsible breeding practices is a significant reason our shelters are overflowing with abandoned and unhealthy animals. When you choose to get a puppy from a breeder who doesn’t provide vaccinations, health certifications, or a clear understanding of the dog’s genetic background, you’re not just making an uninformed decision—you’re perpetuating a cycle of neglect and irresponsibility.

If you send me a picture of the puppy you just impulsively picked up, knowing it has had zero vaccinations, no health checks, and comes from parents with unknown genetic histories, don’t expect me to be happy for you. I won’t congratulate you on a decision that was made without proper thought or research. Instead, I’m going to take this opportunity to educate you on what responsible pet ownership should look like—and I’ll also make sure you understand the commitment you’ve just made.

Owning a dog is a long-term responsibility that goes beyond the initial excitement of bringing a puppy home. It’s about ensuring that the dog is healthy, well-bred, and supported by a breeder who cares about the long-term welfare of the breed. By choosing to support ethical breeders, you’re not only getting a healthier, happier pet, but you’re also helping to reduce the number of dogs who end up in shelters due to poor breeding practices.

Let’s break the cycle and make informed, responsible choices when it comes to bringing a new dog into our lives.

I sold my Mustang in Abilene before flying back to North Carolina, and now I’m driving a van filled with all my dog training equipment instead.

Driving to classes isn’t as fun anymore, but it’s nice having everything I need with me at all times.

Plus, I’m planning to wrap the van with graphics, something I wouldn’t do with the Mustang.

When someone contacts me about having their dog trained, they may not receive the response they were expecting.

Many people hope for a quick fix, but improving a dog’s behavior requires addressing the root causes.

Genetics and past experiences are set, so the focus must be on enhancing communication and managing the home environment.

This approach can significantly change the relationship dynamics with the dog and improve its behavior.

I understand that being upfront about the effort required might deter some potential clients.

However, I believe in establishing relationships based on factual information rather than offering false hope to get people into a class.

If, after hearing the realities of the effort needed to change a dog’s behavior, you’re still willing to sign up, it shows you’re committed to the process and ready to challenge yourself to achieve your goals.
