The Sportsman's Den Taxidermy Studio in Flint, Texas became Fish Clones 35 years ago. We then made the ultimate in fiberglass fish replicas, and sold other taxidermy supplies. Our actual taxidermy mounts were limited to those who could afford the best through hunting and fishing lodges in Alaska and Canada, and a few local discerning clients who wanted something more than the average taxidermy mou

nt. Coupled with our success at state, regional, and national taxidermy competitions, and reputation as one of America's best led to our teaching seminars up to the national level, and judging several state competitions, and the Southern Regional. This caused me to lose sight of where my talents came from, but in April of 1996, a bolt of lightning that led to a fire caused me to re-evaluate where I was in life. Choosing God and my family over what He left of our business, we shut down the supply business and sold our molds. Coming out of retirement and doing 16 birds for a local shop, I was disappointed to see what fish and bird taxidermy had become in the Tyler area. Yes, catch and release fishing had taken hold, but the average reproduction fish mount only vaguely resembled the fish it represented, and looked nothing like the original fish. We do a limited number of big game mounts, along with life-sized small mammals, birds and fish. Trust us to prepare your valued trophy to reflect the way God made it. Our mounts will stand the test of time. Our many years of knowledge, experience, and God-given talent insures that your trophy is done properly, with only the best quality components, and made to imitate life as closely as The Lord will allow a man to do. While our days of competing, judging taxidermy competitions, and teaching seminars are long past per agreement with The Creator, we will accept ONLY what we can complete in a reasonable time frame for discerning sportsmen. Natural habitats are one of the things we offer to add to the aesthetic realism of each Aquatic Originals subject, creating a true piece of wildlife art that you will treasure for many years to come.

Our Story

Taxidermy is an art form using the prepared skins of birds, fish, mammals, or reptiles to attempt to create a lifelike rendition of a once living creature. Some are better at it than others, and create a more realistic, longer lasting subject than others. Therefore, they charge accordingly for their work. Conversely, sometimes you don't always get what you pay for, as the taxidermy profession has many bad actors.

For example, with the popular fiberglass fish reproduction mounts, one can pay a hefty price for a cheap knockoff that was never cast from a real fish. A lot depends on whom you are dealing with. If you are shopping for the cheapest price, don't expect the highest quality. If you seek high quality, realistic craftsmanship, then you will pay more for it, but it will look better, and last longer.

I retired from taxidermy as a profession in 1991 to make the highest quality fish replicas that were available. When we do your replica mount we will recreate the colors and markings from your photo with casts from actual specimens showing all the detail. We will never try to pass some machine carved and painted Chinese knockoff that seldom looks like the correct species, let alone your fish.

In 1996 after a fire, I re-evaluated my life, and chose God and family over the lure of the taxidermy competition circuit. In 2016 I learned that the area desperately needed a quality fish and bird taxidermist so I decided to again pursue the craft, but on a much smaller scale than when we had The Sportsman's Den Taxidermy Studio just down the road.
