Did you know that a horse with a moderate hair coat starts requiring additional calories for body temperature regulation when the outside temperature drops to approximately 50°F?

As the temperatures start to drop, especially overnight, it's important to remember that cold weather prompts special considerations for your horse's diet and care. This is particularly important when it comes to the older members of the herd; consult your primary horse doctor to formulate a plan to keep your horses happy and healthy this fall and winter!

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is used to measure the quality of air and is reported on a scale of 0 - 500. The AQI indicates how clean or polluted the air is, and is based on five major air pollutants:

1️⃣ Ground-level ozone
2️⃣ Carbon monoxide
3️⃣ Sulfur dioxide
4️⃣ Nitrogen dioxide
5️⃣ Airborne particles (particulate matter)

The two pollutants posing the greatest risk to respiratory health are ground-level ozone and airborne particles. Ground-level ozone is created when sunlight reacts with certain chemicals, such as those emitted from car exhaust or power plants. Airborne particles are small particles suspended in the air, like those that come from wildfire smoke, dust, and volcanic ash.
