The problem is rarely the dog...
Common things said by my clients and my opinions or common responses -
Client - My dog never listens
Me - Your dog is always listening
Client - I rescued my dog
Me - No. You adopted. The staff who work tirelessly at the rescue organization or shelter rescued your dog
Client - My dog has all these problems and I don't know why
Me - Has your dog had any formal training?
Client - No
Me - Then why does it surprise you?
Client - But I've had 5 dogs my whole life
Me - I trained 6 dogs, just yesterday
Client - But my dog wants this
Me - Kids often want maccas, do you let them have it whenever they want it?
Client - My dog is disobeying
Me - No, your dog just can't speak English
Client - He knows what he's supposed to do
Me - So what?
Client - My fur baby
Me - No, your dog
Client - I use a flexi-lead
Me - Throw it in the bin
Client - I use a gentle leader
Me - Do you have a horse?
Client - It's only mouthing
Me - It's biting
Client - I wouldn't use it on my kids
Me - Do you feed your kids dog food? No, then don't compare your kids and your dogs
Client - Doesn't my dog hate being outside?
Me - They're a dog
Client - But dogs are domesticated
Me - No. Dogs are born wild, you domesticate them through proper training and socializing
Client - But the vet said this...
Me - And how'd that work for ya?
Client - My dog can't be off lead because he never comes back
Me - Then how come he's sitting by my feet?
Client - My dog loves to please me
Me - When has your dog ever done anything for you without the hope of getting something in return?
Remember. A good dog trainer is hired to tell you the truth. Truth isn't always what you had in mind and sometimes the truth hurts but any canine professional worth their salt will always be honest and put the dogs needs above their own.
