In light of multiple news reports recently about a canine respiratory illness of unknown origin in Oregon, we know that dog owners are concerned.

While over 200 cases of atypical canine respiratory disease have been reported by veterinarians to the Oregon Department of Agriculture, Dr. Stephen Kochis, the chief medical officer for the Oregon Humane Society, told the New York Times he does not want people to panic because this figure represents a small number of all the dogs in the state. “We are not seeing an uptick in respiratory disease outside of the ordinary expectation for pets that would get respiratory disease,” he said.

Officials in other states have reported similar canine illnesses. Along with the Oregon Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, veterinarians, scientists and laboratories in multiple states are studying the possible origins of this illness.

We know that dog owners want to keep their pets safe. We recommend that owners exercise caution—not worry. Respiratory illnesses caused by viruses or bacteria can occur in dog populations and these illnesses are often treatable. Symptoms of respiratory illness in canines may include coughing, sneezing, fever, nasal and/or eye discharge, loss of appetite, and lethargy. If your dog shows these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

We also encourage you to speak to your veterinarian about what vaccines are appropriate for your dog. These may include canine influenza, Bordetella and parainfluenza. Additionally, you may consider reducing contact with large numbers of unknown dogs such as at dog parks, dog day care and boarding. Avoid communal water bowls shared by multiple dogs. And, most importantly, if your dog is sick, isolate them at home and seek veterinary care.

In light of the recent news article about the canine respiratory cases in Oregon and specifically the Willamette Valley, we thought we would share the information our Oregon Veterinary board released recently.

These are the things they suggest to keep your dogs safe.

Dog owners can protect their pets from respiratory illness by:

Reducing contact with large numbers of unknown dogs. Just like with other respiratory pathogens, the more contacts your dog has, the greater the risk of encountering a dog that’s infectious.
Reducing contact with sick dogs. This can be harder to determine but if a dog looks sick (coughing, runny nose, runny eyes), keep your dog away from it.

Keep sick dogs at home and seek veterinary care.

Avoid communal water bowls shared by multiple dogs.

Ask your veterinarian for advice on which vaccinations your dog should have. Common vaccinations include canine influenza, Bordetella and parainfluenza.

If it's sick, consider having your dog tested with a PCR test to help determine the causative agent (viral/bacterial), if possible.

Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal and/or eye discharge, and lethargy. If your pet is showing any of these symptoms, please isolate them and contact your veterinarian.

This is something that is important to us. Please microchip your pet. It will help in identifying ownership if your pet should be lost or taken. GPS collars are essential in early alert if your pet is separated from you, in an accident or chasing after wildlife on a walk. Talk to a veterinary professional. They can help.

Be the reason someone celebrates because you helped find their missing pet.

Just as human health professionals have faced challenges during the pandemic, so, too, have veterinary health professionals. OVMA president Dr. Heidi Houchen of VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists joined OPB's Think Out Loud to discuss these issues, along with the CEO of DoveLewis, Ron Morgan. Listen in as these two veterinary professionals explain why Oregonians seeking care for their pets are experiencing longer wait times and are sometimes being referred to other clinics.
Pandemic adoptions and attentive owners seeking care for their pets (both good things!) mean veterinary hospitals and clinics are facing a high demand for their services. This, coupled with restrictions that create increased workload but are important to keep both veterinary staff and clients healthy, can result in extended wait times. Clinics are also experiencing staff shortages and staff burnout.
"The most important thing that you can do...is please be kind and please be patient with veterinary staff. Know that these people are doing their job for the love of animals...and it's bothering them just as much as you that you can't get dealt with in the time you want to be dealt with. The kinder you are to staff, the more chance we have of having staff because the burnout is a very real thing." ~Dr. Heidi Houchen
Veterinarians and their teams are trying very hard to provide the best care possible under these difficult circumstances and appreciate your support.

While ICU beds are full and healthcare workers are overworked, they’re not the only ones dealing with an influx of patients. Throughout the state, veterinary hospitals and clinics are facing large amounts of new patients, understaffing and burnout.
