With temperatures creeping higher this week it is important to keep our furry friends safe. Provide plenty of fresh water for drinking. Try to do your walks in the early morning and later in the evenings when it is cooler. Remember, that they are smaller and closer to the hot pavement so the air they are breathing in is much warmer and they may be getting hotter than we are even when they are walking right next to us. Consider walking on grassy areas to prevent the paw pads from getting burned from extremely hot pavement. Brachycephalic (short muzzled) breeds have more trouble in the heat so generally they cannot endure as much exercise and heat as other breeds. Dogs expel heat from their bodies through panting so dogs that have compromised breathing have increased chances of overheating.
The best way to cool an overheated pet is to soak them in cool water. The more rapidly you get their body temperature down the safer they are from heat related side effects. Have fun with your pets but be mindful of the risks. Stay safe and have a wonderful summer! Florence Vet Hospital Drs and Staff!

We at the Florence veterinary hospital pride ourselves on having an open door policy for helping lost animals. We have helped hundreds of dogs and cats in being returned safely to their owners. Unfortunately, we do occasionally become involved in some custody battles in our efforts to help animals. Let it be known that some of these animals are in our office for five minutes for us to check for a microchip. We always have and always will work to get pets home safely to their owners . Know that our office is in full Cooperation with the police and animal control officers regarding any past or present lost pets! Thank you!!

I do apologize , but I was forced to cancel our holiday pet photo contest due to that post being hacked. Hackers had posed as the florence vet hosp and marked several participants as winners and asked these people to apply for a credit card. Please don’t give any of your information out in this scam. I hope this hasn’t caused anyone issues . It appears our just for fun contest will no longer be able to take place due to the ill will of others. Please don’t let this ruin your holidays . I have taken down the original post so as to protect those who participated.
Sorry , Dr Dan

Regarding the contagious cough among dogs... It is most probably viral because it is nonresponsive to antibiotics . In a very small number of cases, the infection has turned into pneumonia ( infection in the lungs). If pneumonia is suspected, then antibiotics are added.
Preventative measures include… making certain that dogs are current on their bordetella vaccine, dhpp or dhlpp vaccines and giving flu vaccines.
Avoiding social dog settings such as boarding, daycare, grooming , dog shows and dog parks etc may reduce exposure.
If you have to take your dog into a social situation, make certain that the facility requires updated vaccines among other pets as well as yours.
Our office is implementing increased efforts to prevent spread of infection such as Extra disinfection, sick and well exam rooms, and having clients wait in their vehicles until an exam room is available to prevent mingling of dogs.
This disease is unlikely to be a big threat to the average dog but very social dogs may be at higher risk of contracting the cough. If your dog should develop a nagging cough that lasts longer than two days, or is lethargic coughing and not eating; you may want to call our office.
Keep in mind that there are a dozen different minor diseases that can cause cough. We don’t want to diminish the seriousness of this new disease but so far we are not seeing an increase in cough /pneumonia that is more than usual for our office. Unfortunately this time of the year shows increased pet illness just like human illness. Changing weather and dry indoor air can be aggravating to the respiratory system. Thank you.

This beautiful kitty needs a home. Approximately one yr old female, spayed, felv/fiv negative, vaccinated . I have a lot of people who say that they don’t like cats. I always say” you haven’t met the right cat yet”. This kitty has a very loving, confident, playful personality. We were considering keeping her as an office cat but she deserves a home where she can be enjoyed at all times!! Don’t let this one get away, call our office for details. 859 371-6501

This is a random picture that I found on a veterinary site. Please don’t walk your dogs on the hot pavement in the heat of the day. Blistered feet are a real thing. If you can’t walk on the hot pavement barefoot, they can’t either. Stick to the grass and dirt or wait for a cooler time of the day. Keep in mind it may take till way after dark for tge pavement to cool. There is nothing we can do for this except use pain meds and let it heal. Accidents happen but just know this can be a real threat to your dog.
