Do the Dew(claws)? M. Christine Zink DVM, PhD, DACVSMR I am a vet that works exclusively with performance dogs, developing rehabilitation programs for injured dogs or dogs that have had surgery as a result of performance-related injuries. I have seen many dogs now, especially field trial/hunt test and agility dogs, that have had chronic carpal arthritis, frequently so severe that they have to be retired or at least carefully managed for the rest of their careers. Of the over 30 dogs I have seen with carpal arthritis, only one has had dewclaws. The others have all had them removed. If you look at an anatomy book (Miller’s Guide to the Anatomy of Dogs is an excellent one – see figure below) you will see that there are 5 tendons attached to the dewclaw. Of course, at the other end of a tendon is a muscle, and that means that if you cut off the dew claws, there are 5 muscle bundles that will become atrophied from disuse. Those muscles indicate that the dewclaws have a function. That function is to prevent torque on the leg. Each time the foot lands on the ground, particularly when the dog is cantering or galloping, the dewclaw is in touch with the ground. If the dog then needs to turn, the dewclaw digs into the ground to support the lower leg and prevent torque. If the dog doesn’t have a dewclaw, the leg twists. A lifetime of that and the result can be carpal arthritis. Remember: the dog is doing the activity regardless, and the pressures on the leg have to go somewhere. They can be absorbed by the dewclaw, or they will move up and down the leg to the toes, carpus, elbow, and shoulders. Perhaps you are thinking, “I never have had one of my dogs have carpal pain or arthritis.” Well, we need to remember that dogs, by their very nature, do not tell us about mild to moderate pain. If a dog was to be asked by an emergency room nurse to give the level of his pain on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being the worst, their scale would be 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Most of our dogs, especially if they deal with pain that is of gradual onset, just deal with it and don’t complain unless it is excruciating. But when I palpate the carpal joints of older dogs without dewclaws, I almost always elicit pain with relatively minimal manipulation. As to the possibility of injuries to dew claws. Most veterinarians will say that such injuries actually are not very common at all. And if they do occur, then they are dealt with like any other injury. In my opinion, it is far better to deal with an injury than to cut the dew claws off of all dogs “just in case.” Anatomical diagram viewing the medial side of a dog’s left front leg demonstrating the five tendons that attach to the dewclaw.

Stanley is still available. I have reduced his price to less than half of what I normally charge for a puppy like this. If someone who can provide a good home (you must fill out the application) wants him but price is an issue, talk to me and let's see what we can work out. I'm going to get current pics soon. This pic was taken when he was out in the puppy play area a few weeks ago. He'll be 12 weeks old tomorrow and is ready to go - dewormed regularly, first set of shots, health tested (clear) and potty pad trained - we're also working on crate training but he does so well in his bed on the floor beside our bed, we don't always put him in the crate. He is happy, healthy, well socialized, and extremely intelligent. He loves to snuggle in your lap and will follow you everywhere (say goodbye to going to the bathroom by yourself LOL)

Betty Rose, Miles, and Sophia are all sold and have gone to their new families.

Stanley is still available. He is doing very well with crate training at night - he has even put himself to sleep in his crate! He also does well just sleeping in his bed or on a bathrobe on the floor beside our bed. He's doing really well with potty pad training, too. He has integrated into our pack seamlessly but we cannot keep him so contact me if you'd love an adorable, loveable, personable, intelligent toy poodle puppy in your life!

Puppies!!! The puppies turned 8 weeks old yesterday and were able to go outside to the special puppy play area today because it is so much warmer today than it has been in months. The wind was howling but they didn't care. A new video is also uploading to our youtube channel.

Our Golden Girls litter arrived on Betty White's 100th birthday, so we had to name the puppies after Golden Girls. This puppy is Stanley. He is charting to be around 8 pounds as an adult. He is black but may fade to blue or silver. He is very loving and a bit more reserved than Miles and Betty Rose....

I did a new video today! Puppies will be 6 weeks old tomorrow. I did individual photos but they all turned out blurry except for one of Miles so I'll have to try again later.

The puppies are now 4+ weeks old and are started on solid food (beef meat baby food, Honest Kitchen beef dehydrated food mixed with goat's milk for now) . Their coats are curly and they're getting around pretty well. I'll get new photos and a new video posted soon.

We had originally planned an April and July litter from Mimosa and Brandy, but Brandy had other ideas and just whelped her litter 3 weeks ago, so we have decided not to breed Mimosa for an April litter, will skip Brandy's July litter and will wait to see if we want to breed Mimosa when she comes back into heat in August. That would mean an October litter, ready to go around Christmas. If we opt not to breed her then, the Golden Girls litter is the only litter for this year.

The puppies are 11 days old. They're doing well. I am doing ENS with them daily. ENS = early neurological stimulation. This helps them physically, mentally, and emotionally. Plus, I like handling them every day. Eyes should start to open next week and then the real fun begins!
