Hello Floyd community. We appreciate your support and patience during this transition period. We have been overwhelmed by the increased case load since the retirement of both Dr. McGrath and Dr. Harris. We have unfortunately had to make the decision to stop taking new clients for the time being. We are doing this is an effort to better serve our existing clients and not overextend ourselves. We do hope to reverse this decision at some point in the future.

- Do you know how to recognize pain in your dog or cat? Some signs are more obvious, such as limping or yelping, while others are more subtle, such as increased sleeping or a change in litter box habits.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, which is a good time to become aware of the signs that your pet may be suffering. Be on the lookout for the following behaviors and contact your veterinarian if you think your pet is in pain. Never try to treat your pet with human medications since many are toxic to pets.

Hey Friends, You may be wondering why we were closed on Friday.
Unfortunately, Dr. Nicolo had to have shoulder surgery to repair an old injury. Over the next week, June 21st-25th, we will not be open for regular business hours. However, we will have a staff member on site Monday, June 21st, Tuesday, June 22nd and Thursday, June 25th from 9 am- 12 pm to fill prescriptions. If you are going to need prescriptions or flea and tick control in the next couple of weeks, please feel free to stop by and pick it up so you do not run out. Dr. Nicolo will be able to resume regular well/sick office visits on Tuesday, June 29th, but will not be ready to perform surgery until around the first of August.

If you have an emergency, please contact Town and Country in Christiansburg or an emergency clinic of your choice. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please be patient with us over the next couple of months as we help Dr. Nicolo recover. šŸ’™

These two baby North American River Otters were found outside their den, nowhere near a water source, and far away from any signs of parentsā€”we suspect that someone may have moved them and dropped them off given their strange location of rescue. Weak, hungry, and scared these twins definitely needed human intervention and were brought into rehab by a conservation police officer. Otters are common but historically declined due to the fur trade in early American history and because of decline in water quality in recent American history. Tightening clean water regulations and wetland protection has allowed this species to bounce back but they still face many challengesā€”as a species that is highly sensitive to water pollution and toxins, they need strong environmental protections and management if they are to continue to live in our American future. - If youā€™re sending a Motherā€™s Day bouquet to a cat owner, make sure to tell the florist to leave out the lilies. While many plants are poisonous to cats, lilies are especially dangerous. In fact, every part of the plant is toxic: the petals, stem, leaves, pollen ā€” even the water in the vase. Ingesting just a small amount can cause severe kidney damage and even death. (Dogs that eat lilies may have stomach upset, but they donā€™t develop kidney failure.)

If you suspect that your cat has eaten any part of a lily, seek veterinary care immediately.
