Heads up to all who feed kibble!

Best to Keep it in the Original Packaging

You should store the whole bag of dog food inside of the airtight dog food storage containers. That way, the bag can provide an added barrier that helps seal in fats and oils to prevent them from becoming rancid later.

Keeping dog food in the original bag will also ensure that you have access to the UPC code, lot number, “best by” date and brand and manufacturer information in case of a problem, like a defect or recall, to report to the FDA. When you file a complaint about your dog’s food, all of this information likely will be required.

Keeping Your Dog Food Container Clean
Many dog owners simply top off the dog food storage container with a new bag of dog food as it starts to run low, but this is a bad idea.

Always wash out the container between refills. The oils from the kibble tend to make the container greasy, and you can then end up having rancid oil from the old bag contaminating the fresh food.

Always thoroughly washing stainless steel or plastic dog food storage containers with hot, soapy water or white vinegar. Then, rinse and dry completely before refilling. Excess moisture can cause mold and mildew to grow on the food.

A Cool, Dry Place is Ideal
In order to maintain the nutritional quality and shelf life of dry dog food, it is important that you store the food and its container in a cool, dry place.

Moisture can lead to mold, which can make your pet sick. High temperatures can also speed up the degradation process and cause the nutrients within the food to breakdown. You will want to avoid storing your dry dog food in places where temperatures can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, like a garage or shed.

🚨 A Personal Message From our President/CEO 🚨

Dear Friends,

Within our four walls, animals continue to decline mentally, emotionally, and physically--and only you can change that. The stress, loneliness, and lack of stimulation have taken a serious toll on the mental health of a record, 600+ animals in our care, as well as the staff and volunteers who are living a nightmare as they watch these once happy dogs plunge into depression.

HSHC fully embraces a no-kill philosophy that gives every adoptable animal in our care a chance to live, love, and be loved. We have managed to sustain this even through the unrelenting, capacity crisis going on 2 years now. Our team is running out of emotional steam, and these animals are running out of time.

You see, I believe there is a misperception that because HSHC embraces a no-kill philosophy, there is less urgency in adopting, specifically dogs, from our organization. People see our beautiful building and assume because all of these animals are now safe at HSHC, they will be okay.

I need you to know that they are NOT okay. And, for the first time in well over a decade, we have had to euthanize once adoptable dogs--who after months of waiting for someone to come--mentally and physically declined to the point that the only humane thing to do was give them peace.

Below, we have featured dogs who may be weeks, or even days, from the same fate.

Our purpose is to provide sanctuary to abandoned, unwanted, and displaced animals. Our purpose is to save animals from their abusers and provide life-saving care to thousands more each year. We serve as their voice and fiercely advocate for their well-being. Our team raises the funds, provides the daily care, and creatively promotes and markets these animals every day. Our team has given more of themselves than anyone should ever be asked to keep these animals alive. We have done our part.

And now, I am imploring our supporters and the Hamilton County community to rally behind their shelter by adopting a dog (or cat), so a cage isn't where their stories end.

Clear The Shelters Adoption Event is this Saturday from 12-5pm. In place of our usual adoption fees, adult dogs and cats are only $10*, and kittens are just $50. All adoptions include a free one-month supply of preventatives, spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccines, a starter bag of food, and wellness exam at a participating veterinarian. Plus, the first 50 families who walk through the door will receive a free goodie bag.

In closing, I'll share a quote from one of my favorite songs by Oleta Adams. I tear up whenever I hear it as I imagine these animals would be saying the same thing if they could. I imagine the ones we've lost saying it to the very end. "I don't care how you get here, just get here if you can."

Please don't wait,
Rebecca Stevens
President & CEO

Repost from our friends at 🌳

We have had a few cases of mycotoxin poisoning recently. Its not a poisoning that folks are generally familiar with, so we thought we’d share the information to raise awareness.-

Ingestion of mouldy food from the bin or a compost pile puts dogs, cats, horses, livestock, and even wildlife at risk for toxicity due to tremorgenic mycotoxins. These toxins may be found in MOULDY bread, pasta, cheese, nuts, or other decaying matter like compost. Clinical signs include vomiting, agitation, incoordination, tremors, seizures, and elevated body temperature. A specific mycotoxin called aflatoxin can even cause liver failure. Be sure to keep mouldy food and compost out of your pets reach!

Have you visited a cat cafe lately?

A cat café is a fun mix of caffeinated beverages and felines! It’s a “pawsitively” entertaining experience for animal lovers and those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Some cat café‘s even feature adoptable cats from local shelters and rescues!

🐾 Family-Friendly: Duck has lived in a home with children and other dogs and did great with both. He’s a social butterfly with a soft spot for playtime and cuddles.

Dear City Councils/County Commissioners and state politicians,

We need you to work in our shelters for just 1 week. Included in that work is ride-alongs with ACOs, cleaning up after animals and feeding, helping trap loose/dumped dogs, walking/handling dogs, taking phone calls from the public, checking in surrendered animals, and holding animals as they are euthanized.

After one week, then you meet with the shelter staff and area rescues and have a discussion.

Something has to give, and each community has to come up with a plan. We simply cannot keep up this insanity.
