Welcome back to "Myth Busting Monday" where we will address common misconceptions that we hear about us in the community!

MYTH: “The Fond du Lac Humane Society knows the background of all the animals that come into our care.”

FACT: While we sometimes get the full story on a pet that we take in, many times we don’t know much about the animal at all. Our pets come to us in a variety of ways and that doesn’t always allow for the background to be disclosed to us.

For instance, sometimes we get animals left at our door when our building is closed. This is not the appropriate way to leave an animal for us, but it does happen. Often in those cases, we don’t have any information at all about that animal or animals.

We get many stray animals each year and the Good Samaritans who bring them in only know where they found the animal and how it acted in the brief time they had it. Other times we get the animal’s owners dropping them off as a “stray” and they pretend they don’t have the information on that animal. This limits the needed details that we are provided with that could help us find the ideal home for that animal. This leaves us with only knowing the physical information of the animal and that it’s a stray.

We try to gather as many details as possible about each pet while they’re in our care to place them in the perfect home for their needs. When we do have their background information from their previous home, it makes this process much easier. We try to provide adopters with as much as we can about the pet they’re taking home, but we are limited to what we know.

If you’re ever in a situation where you have to release an animal to an animal welfare organization, the more you can share with the organization you’re releasing an animal to, the better chance they have at success in the future! Even the smallest details matter regardless of how much time you’ve spent with them.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us at 920-922-8873.

Welcome back to "Myth Busting Monday" where we will address common misconceptions that we hear about us in the community!

MYTH: “The Fond du Lac Humane Society does not try to reunite animals with their owners.”

FACT: As a Humane Society, we believe in the humane treatment of animals, including the reunification of pets and families. We want what’s best for each animal that comes into our facility and going back to the home they are comfortable in is a huge piece of that.

When a stray comes in, we check for a microchip. If an animal is microchipped, we call the registered number(s) in hopes of reuniting that pet with their family. If the call is unsuccessful, we also follow up with the registered email address and physical address by emailing and mailing a letter about the animal being in our care.

Regardless of if an animal is microchipped or not, we post a photo of them on our social media in the hopes of it reaching the family of that animal or someone who knows the family. Our hope is that we reach the right people and can return their furry friend(s) to them!

We also work on reunification by keeping a book of lost pets to compare stray animals that come in side by side with the photos of lost pets that are shared with us by community members. We keep this photo book handy and are updating it as we get calls of people losing or finding their pets.

We don’t want to keep an animal that already has an established home. We want to reunite those lost furry friends with their families who miss them. We know they miss their people too!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us at 920-922-8873.

Commonly asked questions:
Reclaim days/hours: Reclaims can be done up to 30 minutes before close of animal viewing, Monday thru Saturday. For the safety of the staff, owner reclaims are not permitted outside of standard business hours.
Rabies vaccination requirement: Prior to (or at times of) reclaim, you must present a copy of the current rabies certificate or prepay for one with the veterinary clinic of your choice.
Reclaim fees: There will be a reclaim fee. Reclaims start at $43 plus tax if he/she is not spayed/neutered, there is an additional $50 charge; if not spayed/neutered, but owner gets it done within 90 days after reclaim, this $50 is refunded.
Stray hold: Found animals are held (for the owners to reclaim) for 4 days. The 1st day does not count, and if the 4th day lands on a Sunday or legal holiday, the hold is extended for one additional day. if not reclaimed by the owner during the stray hold period, the animal will be assessed and may be available for adoption.
We are deliberately not posting identifying information other than a picture and general location. We want to give the owners the opportunity to correctly identify their animal to ensure the animal goes to the right home. We will try to update the listing if/when the animal has been reclaimed.
