I just wanted to keep everyone updated. My shoulder is healing and slowly getting better and better. I've been going to PT and doing what I'm told 😊 I had another Doctor's appt today and was given the return to work date as Monday March 13th... just in time for spring! I'll continue to do my exercises and get the strength back in my shoulder so I will hopefully be ready to tackle the big critters. We've already been scheduling appts for late March/April, so give us a call and get in the schedule... see you all soon!!

Hi everyone, I just wanted to keep everyone posted as to whats going on here at the practice.
I (Dr. Snetsinger) am having surgery on my shoulder on Friday. Several years ago I had an MRI on it, and we decided to try other things (PT, anti-inflammatories, etc)to put off having surgery. I've gotten by for several years having good days and bad days, luckily I get to rest it decently in the winter and it starts to feel better just about the time spring hits and screws it up again...lol...but I haven't had a good day in a long time, its pretty much been bad days or really bad days for about 8 months now and it is getting difficult to even do basic, everyday things. A recent MRI shows that it is much worse than the previous one and is considered "advanced " now. The orthopedic surgeon said it looks "very angry" and its time to "quit kicking the can down the road" and get in there and fix it. So thats what I'm doing. I figured I'd plan this over the winter when work is slow and I will hopefully be back to 100% by spring. I am having 3 things fixed: rotator cuff, distal clavicle resection (cutting off the end of my collar bone to fix the advanced arthritis in my AC joint), and fixing some tears where my biceps tendon attaches. I will be laid up for a while. The first month I can't do anything, the 2nd month I can lift 2lbs (whoo hoo), and the 3rd month PT and regaining strength and motion in the arm. I am hoping everything goes well, so if you're the praying type, say a little prayers for the surgeons and for my healing. We will still technically be "open". We will be answering the phones, answering questions, refilling prescriptions, etc. I have already talked to a few local vets about covering for me if an emergency arises, so don't hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns. I will do my best to still be here for my clients. 😊

ETA: Surgery went well, my biceps tendon attachment wasn't as bad as he thought so thats great! The other two parts of the surgery went well...Should be less time healing 😊

I just wanted to share this post from AAEP...

Have you been waiting longer than usual for an open appointment with your veterinarian or been unable to access after-hours services for your horse? The shortage of equine veterinarians in the U.S. is likely the cause. Many veterinary practices have too few horse doctors to service all their clients.

Why? Only about 6% of new veterinary graduates annually enter equine practice. After five years, 50% of these young veterinarians leave for small animal practice or quit veterinary medicine altogether. The primary reasons are the personal demands of the profession and equine practice’s lower starting salaries. Many new veterinarians begin their career with more than $200,000 in student loan debt, making an equine position with lower compensation often unthinkable. When financial concerns are combined with the always present demands of emergency coverage, many equine veterinarians choose to leave for a healthier way of life.

The good news is that the AAEP along with private veterinary practices and veterinary schools are addressing the pain points which have led to the current crisis. But the solution is complex and will require the support and collaboration of every person in the equine industry β€” including horse owners. As we work to improve the profession for current and future veterinarians, you have a huge role to play in the much-needed transformation of equine practice. Horse doctors look forward to working together with you for the good of the horse and the sustainability of veterinary care!
