Today is Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day. In 15-20% of all new cancer diagnoses, Lymphoma is the most common form. Early detection, like with any cancer, is key to managing this cancer.

Some symptoms of lymphoma are:
Lumps, bumps, or growths under the skin
Appetite loss
Vomiting
Lethargy
Unexplained weight loss
Coughing
Disinterest in exercise or regular activities

If you notice any changes in your dog’s behavior, appearance, appetite, energy, or attitude, we encourage you to schedule an appointment.

November is National Senior Pet Month.
This month, we are raising awareness of senior pets and how owners can advocate for their older pets. A pet is considered senior when it reaches a certain age; cats are considered senior from 10 to 12 years old, dogs under 55 pounds are considered seniors at 8 to 10 years, dogs over 55 pounds are considered seniors at 8 to 9 years, and dogs that are 100+ pounds are considered seniors at 6 to 7 years.

For all senior animals, yearly wellness exams and labwork are always suggested to help maintain their health as they age. Helping your pet maintain an optimal weight is key, too!

Today we are sharing a weight loss story of one of our clients, who was kind enough to share Queenie's story. This month is Pet Obesity Awareness and we discussed last week how obesity can affect your pets' health.

Queenie, a munchkin Spynx, was rescued into her new home and weighed a little over 16lbs. At that weight, she was considered extremely overweight for her body! Her new mom knew that Queenie being that overweight could affect her health and well-being. With her previous owners, she was free-fed and would eat whenever she wanted.

Queenie was put on a weight loss kibble, got a new microchip feeder that could be set on a timer, and limited treats! It took some time but as Queenie lost weight, she became more playful and was able to groom herself fully again, which is an issue with overweight cats. She weighs in at a sleek 6.5lbs and is a super playful girl!

Please chat with your pet's doctor if you have concerns about your pet being overweight and what steps you can take to help prevent it.

Fun Fact Friday: Pit Bull isn’t actually a dog breed. The term is usually used to refer to one or several different bully breeds, including the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier (also known as Amstaff dogs), English Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the Bull Terrier.

Tomorrow is National Pit Bull Awareness Day but we wanted to start the celebration early as love our pittie clients.

October is Pet Obesity Awareness Month.

Pet Obesity is on the climb for both cats and dogs, research shows that 61% of cats and 59% of dogs were reported as overweight or obese in 2022, which is a sharp increase from the 43% and 53% reported in 2010.

Obesity is broadly defined as excessive body weight and body fat. Pets that weigh between 10% and 20% over their ideal body weight are considered overweight.
Any pet over 20% above its ideal weight is classed as obese.
Obesity causes strain on the body. It can contribute to:

• Joint problems: Extra weight can put a strain on your pet’s joints, leading to arthritis and other painful conditions.
• Heart disease: Just like in humans, obesity can increase the risk of heart disease.
• Diabetes: Overweight pets are more likely to develop diabetes, which requires lifelong management.
• Shortened lifespan: Obesity can reduce your pet’s lifespan by up to two years.

If you have concerns about your pets weight, talk with your pet's doctor. There are weight control foods and treats available and we can help develop a weight loss program for your pet!

Did you know we carry Solensia in the clinic?

Solensia is a once-a-month osteoarthritis injection that helps control pain in cats! Here is a checklist to help you as an owner evaluate your cat's pain indicators and if you feel like your cat checks these boxes, talk to your cat's doctor to see if Solensia is right for your cat.

About Us

For over 50 years the Forest Lake Veterinary Hospital has been providing compassionate, friendly, quality care for Forest Lake and the surrounding communities. Our veterinarians and staff work hard to make this a place where both you and your pets will feel welcome and cared for.

Our pets are important members of our families. Should your pet become ill or require treatment, we will work with you to fully explain your pet’s condition and to devise the best possible diagnostic treatment plan for you and your pet. We consider your involvement in your pet’s health an essential and critical component of maintaining his or her health.

We feature the latest technology for the diagnosis and treatment of small animals, including on-site blood chemistry analysis, blood count analysis, digital x-ray, EKG and a complete surgical suite with isoflorane anesthesia and pulse oximeter. In addition to traditional medicine we also offer the latest in accupunture for our patients. On-site ultrasound and board certified surgeons are also available on an as needed basis.

While we are quite proud of our facility, we are most proud of the level of care and service we provide our patients and clients. We feel our commitment to caring and communication sets us apart. We strive to provide the best possible level of care for your pet, and to do it in the most humane and least stressful manner possible.
