Mush is a super happy husky of only about a year old that will bring so much joy and fun into the lives of the good family that welcomes him home! Mush was found as a stray and it's surprising that no one came looking for him. He's a typical husky as far as energy and happiness goes, but he's not typical in that even though he's young and silly, he is so content to lean his head against you so you'll pet him, or just chill out, sleeping at your feet. Mush is absolutely perfect on a leash and only pulls when he sees wildlife passing by. He does have a prey drive, so a home with no cats is best. Mush seems happy to meet other dogs. The good news is: We had 40++ animals get adopted this week!
The bad news is: Jada was not one of them. In fact, no one has ever even asked about Jada. She was fostered briefly during her heartworm treatment and sadly, the foster failed her and we had to go get her. 😢
Good news again: Jada is heartworm-free and healthy now! But she desperately needs out of the shelter!

Some of our long-timers just wanted to remind you that they're still here, just waiting. These are just some of the dogs that have been waiting literally hundreds of days. Why?? Well.......some need homes with no other pets, some have just been here for so long that they've been completely lost in the shuffle. We have to wonder what goes through their minds. Maybe they wonder what they did to deserve this, maybe they're just happy to be safe and fed. We know in our hearts that they want so much more. That's obvious when they spend time with our staff and volunteers and they remember what it's like to have someone that gives them all of their attention for a while.
Please, give our long-timers another look. Maybe you're an empty-nester and you'd like to travel, and you're concerned about going away and having a dog at home. Spice Girl has been waiting entirely too long already for a good home! She's about 4 years old and this big, beautiful Boerboel arrived in July, 2023 after having a couple of unfit homes. Spice needed some time to put all of that behind her, and she needed help in learning how to trust again. She's a resilient girl though, and she does her best not to let things get her down. Unfortunately, it does get her down, being here for so long. When Spice comes out of the kennel with friends, she's a big, bubbly goofball! She bonds intently with her friends and, as mastiffs are, she's protective of those she's bonded with. It takes her a minute or two to get to know and trust you but once she does, she just about knocks you over with leaning against you to get all of your attention. Spice is well-behaved and has learned lots! She knows sit, stay, down, paw, and so much more. She's good on a leash and loves toys too! Spice has had lousy experiences with pets in the past so it's best if she goes to a home where she can be an only pet. That just means she'll love YOU all the more though. So, when we posted Brooks a couple of days ago, you may have missed him. Brooks is not one to miss, so here's our wonky-toothed wonder in action!
Brooks is about 8 years old and was found by a good samaritan back in April. We discovered that he was microchipped however, his owner's info was deleted back in December due to them no longer wanting him. He was down in the dumps initially and who could blame him? But his health began to decline and sadly, we discovered that he's in renal failure. We began medical treatment and eventually, Brooks rallied! He's doing fantastic now!
Brooks is a real hugger these days, and he's very affectionate, outgoing, and he loves everyone he meets. He's pretty ok with other cats too! Brooks is looking for a fabulous foster home ASAP, as we're unsure of how much time this sweet boy has left. As his foster, you'll need to monitor his eating and drinking and we'll provide him with all he needs to stay healthy. Brooks is an angel of a cat that really doesn't ask for much else. Yes you read right....Karol has been here for a year and a half now!! The 4th of July was her anniversary and we can tell you, she didn't spend Independence Day celebrating with her family at a backyard BBQ or sprawled out on a raft in the pool. She spent it sitting here like every other day of the year, just waiting for something good to happen.
Karol is just 4 1/2 years old and it's true that she had some trust issues when she arrived but as you can see, that's a thing of the past. She had a lousy forner life but now, she's all smiles and fun, and she actually loves making new friends! She's silly and playful, but well behaved and so sweet and affectionate too. Karol doesn't seem to enjoy the company of other pets all that much here. Granted, that could change once she gets settled in at a new home so please don't hold that against her! Wildlife Wednesday- The Goose's Great Escape!
When a local resident noticed a goose in distress in the Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area in New Egypt, our ACO Maria was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, Maria quickly located the goose, that was struggling to keep it's head above water and was rendered flightless by something that was weighing it down. In true Maria-fashion.....she didn't hesitate to trudge right out into the middle of the swamp to investigate.
As Maria entered the swamp in water up to her knees, she was able to quickly and safely get a hold of the beleaguered goose. Maria got to work unraveling the immense amount of muck and debris that was attached to him. Finally, she discovered that the goose was wrapped in a snare trap, as well as a large amount of fishing line. Sadly, snare traps are still legal in the state of New Jersey and this particular goose probably wishes that they would be forever-banned!
After several tense minutes of carefully unraveling and untangling the goose, finally, he was free! In the video, you'll see that it took him a moment to realize that he was no longer facing certain death.....he was saved, and could fly! He soared off into the sunset to go on living his happy goose-life.

This incredibly sweet, petite pittie mix is about 5 years old and we cringe to think of what went on in her former life. Apollo is only about 3 years old and he had a good home but sadly, when his elderly owner passed away, he was tossed outside. That was in the middle of the winter and Apollo sought refuge and warmth under a car where he quickly burned the top of his head, badly. Lucky for Apollo that a wonderful neighbor spotted him and took him to the vet to have his wound treated. She attempted to keep Apollo, but her pets weren't having it, so Apollo is now looking for a loving, safe, forever home. Apollo also picked up FIV during his time outside, but this is so not a big deal! Apollo is full of personality, he loves and wants all of your attention, and he's over-the-top friendly and silly. Shelter-life is no life for this happy, family-kind of dog! Beau had a great home all his life but sadly, one of his owners passed away then the other became terminally ill. As you can imagine, Beau was super stressed and depressed when he arrived but he's learned to move forward, and he's made so many friends and is doing fantastic now. Beau is about 5 1/2 years old and he's a lab/great dane mix that has had a lot of training. He LOVES chasing a ball, running, playing, and leaning up against those he loves. Beau will sit instantly when asked, offer a pawshake, and he takes treats so gently. Beau is extremely housebroken too! Celery could really use your help! She's still just a baby at around 11 months old, but she found herself all alone on the city streets. She isn't your typical stray cat so she must have had a home at some point, but she was allowed to wander, so here she is. Celery is a scaredy-cat that doesn't yet know how to be a relaxed, stress-free cat. She wants desperately to burst out of her shell and never look back, that's obvious. Snoopy is a big, beautiful pointer/pit mix of about 3 years old that is just the perfect dog! Snoopy came to us due to his elderly owner becoming unable to care for him any longer. Snoopy had a good upbringing though, and he's vibrant, healthy, happy, and he's had plenty of training too. Snoopy is a strong guy but once he gets some energy out, he's so easy to handle. He positively loves to run and play and he's an expert fetcher that will zoom after any ball you throw! Loly is a tiny terrier of about 8 years old that SO wants to start over in a loving home! What could be worse than being a tiny, defenseless dog, all alone on the city streets? It's no wonder that Loly was defensive when she was rescued from that life. She let her guard down quickly though, when she realized that she'd get a bath, a haircut, and a good meal! Loly has obviously been through some trauma in her past that has left her with a defensiveness when she meets new people. We're showing her with her caretaker because once she gets to know and love you like she does with her friends, she's the happiest, most loving, outgoing, friendly, playful girl there is! Loly just needs a few minutes to get to know you, that's all. Loly is going to need a home with no young kids but she seems pretty good with dogs that aren't a threat to her. She is on some meds for her liver (Denamarin) which she'll need indefinitely. Oh goodness.....please just give Karol a chance already! This girl completely breaks our hearts sometimes. She wants your attention so desperately and once she's out of the kennel, making friends and getting lots of lovin', she puts the brakes on when it's time to go back, obviously dreading spending the rest of the day alone. Vespa is a very special little bunny that would give anything for a loving home! Vespa came to us in February with some other young bunnies when their owner could no longer care for them. It was obvious that something was a little off with this sweet bunny. He circled a little, wobbled, and even toppled over occasionally. Tests were taken and Vespa was diagnosed with E.Canuculi. This a condition that causes Vespa to lose his balance. It is contagious to other bunnies so he'll either need a home with no other bunnies or a bunny that is also positive. Vespa doesn't let this phase him at all! He's just a year old and is the happiest guy. He's overjoyed to to spend time with people! Vespa has become particularly bonded with one staff member who he hops over to, flops in her lap, and soaks up all the attention he can.
