🐒 Forrest’s story begins on a Mississippi highway — a place no animal should ever have to navigate. When the transport vehicle carrying him and 20 other rhesus macaques overturned on Interstate 59, everything changed in an instant.
The crash sparked national headlines as 8 monkeys escaped into the surrounding woods. Five were tragically lost during the frantic search that followed. Of the three still unaccounted for, only one would make it out alive.
That survivor was Forrest.
After nearly a week on his own, he was finally found and safely recovered. But because of his time outside, he could not return to the biomedical research facility. He needed a permanent, safe place to land — a place where he didn’t have to worry about what came next.
That’s where we stepped in.
When Forrest arrived at Popcorn Park Animal Refuge, he had no name, only a tattoo: “NI 62.” We chose the name Forrest for the little survivor who had spent days wandering through unfamiliar woods. And slowly, he began to bloom. Today, Forrest spends his days exploring ropes, climbing structures, toys, and the freedom of a life that finally belongs to him — all under the watchful, loving care of our team.
This Giving Tuesday, you can help ensure Forrest — and the thousands of animals cared for by AHS and Popcorn Park — continue to get the second chances they deserve. Your generosity fuels everything from food and medical care to enrichment and lifelong sanctuary.
