Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria. This can be found worldwide in soil and water.

All dogs are at risk of Leptospirosis regardless of age, breed, lifestyle or time of year. It is commonly found in puddles, rivers, soil along yards or in parks. It is spread by wildlife such as rabbits, mice and rats that contaminate the soil and water your dog may play in or drink from. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease that can spread to humans if it contact with an infected animal. Recently, the American Animal Hospital Association has changed the leptospirosis vaccine from a lifestyle vaccine to a core vaccine. This means that it is recommended for ALL dogs aged 12 weeks and older.
