We are grateful to sign this agreement with the Municipality of Cotacachi, which allows Amici Cannis Hospital de Animales to protect street animals by providing them with the necessary veterinary services to ensure their health and the health of the people they interact with in the streets. This agreement ensures that street animals will not be poisoned or removed from the streets to be euthanized elsewhere.

We would like to clarify that this agreement represents a commitment to the ideals of animal protection. However, the municipality does not provide any remuneration, nor does it cover the costs of Amici Cannis’ work benefiting homeless animals. For this reason, we rely on the valuable financial support of the community to continue our mission.

Ronny, a 6-month-old puppy, arrived at our facility due to a fungal infection that is affecting his head. Upon a closer assessment, he presented some stomach issues that required care. Canine parvovirus and coronavirus tests were performed to rule out potential causes. 💙

Ronny remains active and is eating well, with no additional symptoms observed. If his condition remains stable and his stomach issue resolves with the treatment we're providing him, we will proceed with the next steps of his TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) plan.🙌

The cost of Ronny's treatment and TNR services has amounted to $143.12. We would deeply appreciate any support you can offer to help cover the expenses for this sweet pup, ensuring his continued care and well-being.

Having visiting veterinarians at Amici Cannis' animal hospital brings numerous advantages. Visiting veterinarians often bring specialized knowledge or techniques, such as dentistry or orthopedic surgery, which can enhance the quality of care offered at the hospital. Different experiences and insights from visiting veterinarians can lead to creative solutions and fresh approaches to complex cases or operational challenges.🌟

We’re grateful to Dr. Laura Jaworski for setting aside time to travel to Ecuador to participate in the Tufts students' externship program as a mentor. Her presence at the hospital has been very energizing and inspirational to the Amici Cannis team, fostering a spirit of collaboration and innovation.🙌💙

February was an incredibly demanding month for Amici Cannis. The team worked tirelessly to address a surge in emergencies, providing care and treatment to animals in urgent need. Simultaneously, we launched an extensive spay/neuter campaign aimed at managing the local animal population and promoting long-term welfare. 🐾🌟

This dual effort required unwavering dedication and coordination, showcasing the team's commitment to improving the lives of animals and supporting the community's needs. We're grateful for Project AnimalAid support and their donation of critical supplies such as surgical gloves, suture material, gauze, and catheters. Their contribution was invaluable in enabling us to provide much-needed services to street dogs and cats throughout the past month. This critical support has made a significant difference in the lives of countless animals in need.💙

Chica, a beloved community dog in Cotacachi, was hit by a car on Wednesday night. Our team responded immediately and brought her to our hospital. After performing an ultrasound, we determined that she didn’t have any fractures, and her injuries were superficial. She is currently under pain management and receiving antibiotics.🐾🌟

We’ve asked one of the neighbors who reported the incident to care for her while she heals. Chica's treatment costs $57.10. If you can donate to support her recovery, we would greatly appreciate it.

If you're interested in adopting Chica, please call us today at +593 98 242 6204

Thank you for helping us give Chica the care she needs! 🐶❤️

Our 2025 street dog survey results are in!

As always, a huge thanks to our amazing volunteers. Without you this effort would not be possible 🫶

During this January survey, there were no surprises regarding the animals’ body condition score, with 74% of the dogs scoring 3/5, which is considered a healthy weight according to veterinary standards. The population of puppies and lactating females on the streets remains low and stable, with only three puppies counted. The population of intact male dogs (unneutered) increased to 37% in 2025, up from 25% in 2024.

This year, we observed a 12% increase in the total number of dogs seen on the streets, from 192 in January 2024 to 217 in January 2025. However, the number remains stable when compared to the surveys conducted between June 2021 and June 2023, when the total number of dogs counted was 216.

A survey showing a decline in the population of street dogs one year, followed by a rebound to the same number as the previous years, could be influenced by various factors. For a more indepth analysis, see https://www.amicicannisusa.org/the-importance-of-a-street-dog-survey

🚨We need your help!🚨

Meet Ms. González, an 80-year-old woman living with her seven dogs in the Tunibamba community. She cares for her pets as if they were her children, and they are her only companions. 🐾❤️

The person who reported this case to us has already agreed to cover the preventive care, including spay/neuter, for four of Ms. González's dogs. There are still three dogs that need assistance. Can you donate to cover their care?🫶

In 2024, over 650 families received free or subsidized veterinary care for their animals through our Indigenous Families Fund across 24 communities in Cotacachi. This was made possible in part thanks to your donations. If you can support Ms. González and her pets, please stop by the hospital or make a donation on our website: https://www.amicicannisusa.org/donate-now⬅

❣️Help Stich get the treatment he deserves.

Meet Stich, a 5-year-old dog who joined our TNR program back in 2022, and is currently in need of veterinary care for a severe skin condition. Thanks to our volunteers who reported his whereabouts he was brought to the Amici Cannis Hospital for the care he desperately needed.💙

Stich received a medicated bath, completed his vaccinations (including rabies), and began his treatment plan. He’ll need weekly medicated baths and ongoing medication to help heal his skin. 🐾

The cost of his medical treatment is $170. Every donation makes a difference in his recovery. Please consider donating today to help us provide the ongoing care this sweet boy needs!🤩

🚨Muriel needs your help!🐾

Muriel is a 7-year-old dog who was found wandering in Quiroga Park during one of our team's routine patrols. She was in extremely poor condition and was immediately brought to Amici Cannis Hospital for urgent care. 🚑

Muriel was enrolled in our TNR program, where she was spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. During the sterilization procedure, our veterinary team discovered an infection and inflammation of her uterus, and she is now recovering under our care. We are providing her with the necessary treatment until she is healthy enough to be released.🧡

Muriel's medical expenses have totaled $80 USD. If you would like to help cover her medical costs, please consider making a donation at the hospital or through our PayPal account: https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/2095778

🚨Martini and Carito Need Your Help!

Martini and Carito, two female dogs, were reported separately by residents of Cotacachi and Quiroga after they were seen fleeing from a pack of male dogs.

Our team quickly responded, picking up Carito from the Quiroga area and Martini from the intersection of Gonzales Suarez and 10 de Agosto streets in Cotacachi. Both dogs were brought to Amici Cannis’ hospital, where they were enrolled in our TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program. They have been spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. Currently, both animals are recovering from surgery at the hospital and have received additional care to ensure their wellbeing.🤩

Our ability to help dogs like Carito and Martini is made possible through the generosity of our donors and supporters. To donate, please visit https://www.amicicannisusa.org/donate-now⬅🐾

Currently, the cost of Martini's care is $80 and Carito's is $119.

Help us raise awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering, and support our TNR program to ensure that dogs like Martini receive the care they need.💝

📣Our dedicated volunteers gathered this morning in Cotacachi to conduct Amici Cannis' bi-annual street dog population survey!

Understanding and managing the population of street dogs is crucial for the success of any organization committed to humanely reducing the number of homeless animals. Conducting a street dog survey is an essential step towards creating and sustaining a successful humane dog population management program, which includes preventive veterinary care and spay/neuter initiatives to reduce unwanted litters.

Since 2018, Amici Cannis has conducted this survey twice per year. Regular surveys enable us to track the success of our street dog population management efforts. By comparing data over time, we can see the impact of our interventions and adjust our strategies accordingly.

This work would not be possible without the dedication of our volunteers. We're so grateful for their time and support during these surveys, and for their encouragement as they continue to help us achieve this goal twice per year.💙🤩

Meet Suco, an adorable 11-month-old community dog from Cotacachi, Ecuador. Like many street dogs, Suco spends his days wandering the familiar streets, visiting houses and shops, greeting his caretakers, and taking naps on their doorsteps.🐾

Suco was first identified by a neighbor and brought to Amici Cannis' animal hospital, where he entered our TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program. He was neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped before being returned to the streets, where residents continue to care for him.💙

Since 2015, Amici Cannis has managed the street dog population in Cotacachi, providing preventive and emergency veterinary services to street dogs and cats. We also enlist the help of the city's residents to meet the animals' basic needs.🫶

We identify our street dogs by giving them collars and name tags. They are also microchipped so our team can monitor their health and keep their vaccines and deworming up to date. If you visit Cotacachi, you'll see our street dogs are in good health, well cared for, and their population is stable and gradually decreasing through natural attrition.

Humane street dog population management is possible. Join our efforts; donate to help us care for street dogs like Suco. https://www.amicicannisusa.org/donate-now⬅️

📣Milestone Achievement: Over 6,000 Animals Cared For in 2024! 🐾

We are thrilled to announce that Amici Cannis reached an amazing milestone in 2024— providing veterinary care to over 6,000 animals! ✨

Despite this amazing accomplishment, we know the need in the rural areas around the city of Cotacachi is immense. We currently have over 500 dogs and cats waiting for free or subsidized spay/neuter services in ten, out of the twenty-four Indigenous villages we work in. We look forward to a 2025 full of opportunities to help these animals and their families, and to expand our veterinary services to include additional villages in need of access to care. 💚

✨We are immensely grateful to everyone who supported us during our end-of-year fundraising efforts. With your help, we were able to assist animals like Pepe, a 6-year-old street dog from the central neighborhood of Quiroga. 🤩

Pepe was reported by a kind neighbor who noticed he seemed to be in pain. Our team brought him to the Amici Cannis hospital, where our vets found him dehydrated and in poor condition. After performing an e***a, they discovered traces of bones and trash in his system.

Once recovered, Pepe was neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. He was then returned to his familiar streets, where one of his caretakers took him in until he recovers from his neutering. This caretaker has committed to providing Pepe with regular food and water. 💚🐾

Thank you for supporting our work! 🫶

Foundation Amici Cannis

Our Mission

Our mission at Amici Cannis is to provide free sterilization and veterinary care for the street dogs and cats of Cotacachi, low cost sterilization for the pets of families in need, and to offer the highest quality veterinary care to your beloved pets. To further our mission, we are committed to on-going public education about animal welfare.

About the Foundation

Cotacachi is a lovely town of approximately 9000 people situated in the highlands of Ecuador, and known for its leather goods. However, there is a sad reality that overshadows Cotacachi’s beauty. There are many homeless dogs wandering the streets; most are hungry, some injured and sick, and many that will never know the comfort and security of having a home.
