Cheddar is a goofy, energetic happy puppy! She’s a very smart pup who’s eager to learn!🐕

During our private training lessons together we worked on…

🐾Potty training

🐾Socialization

🐾Creating positive associations to new noises, smells, people, dogs & experiences

🐾Learning leave it & drop so she doesn’t pick up/eat everything she finds on the ground

🐾Leash walking skills

It was a joy getting to work with such a sweet pup! I’m looking forward to watching her continue to learn and grow!🐶

How can we, as pet parents set ourselves up for success!🐕

We’ve discussed in previous posts how having realistic expectations and moving at our dogs pace is so important for our dogs success!

But…..

We haven’t discussed how important it is set up realistic expectations for ourselves and working at our own pace as pet parents!

🐾We all have busy days in our schedules. Busy with activities like work, taking care of kids, hobbies, appointments, school, clubs, sports etc. It can be hard to include time to work with your dog on training.

🐾Some days you may have time to train with your dog for an hour and other days you’ll only have 15 minutes. That’s okay! Anytime spent working towards our goal is still valuable!

🐾Just like how we are patient with our dogs we have to be patient with ourselves and be mindful of working at our dogs pace and also our pace.

🐾So no matter if you can dedicate 5 minutes or 45 minutes today go out and train with your dog!🐶

☀️Preventing hot dogs on hot days!☀️

I love doing summer activities with my dogs! But do my dogs love it?

🐾With summer arriving it can be hard to tell if your dog is too hot in the summer heat

🐾When training with our dogs we work a lot on learning to read our dogs body language. This is so important because this is how our dogs communicate with us!

🐾This tool is valuable in dog training for countless reasons but is also so important for your dogs health and well being!

🐾Just like how our dogs communicate to us that they are nervous or upset they can also communicate to us when they feel unwell or uncomfortable

🐾The most common ways dogs communicate to us that they are too hot are…

-Excessive panting
-Excessive salivating
-Pulling on the leash towards shade
-Sitting/laying down
-Labored breathing
Etc.

☀️Make sure to listen to your dogs needs and body language this summer so your pup can stay happy and healthy!☀️

Does your dog struggle with reactivity? 🐕

Reactivity is something a lot of my dog clients struggle with

Reactivity can look like….
🐾Barking
🐾Lunging
🐾Growling
🐾 Pulling towards the trigger
🐾etc.

And lots of things can cause reactivity like…
🐾Other dogs
🐾People
🐾Bicycles
🐾Cars
🐾Skateboards
🐾People wearing hats
🐾etc.

Having a reactive dog can make pet parents feel frustrated and embarrassed. Trying to manage reactivity on your own can feel impossible! If this sounds like you please feel free to reach out! I’m here to help set you and your dog up for success!🐶

By using positive reinforcement training we can work at your dogs pace and create positive associations to your dogs triggers. Counter conditioning, desensitizing and staying under threshold is so important to help our dogs feel more comfortable and relaxed near a trigger.

It’s important to find a dog trainer that is educated and qualified to help you train your pup!

🐾As dog trainers we are not here to “fix” your dogs. Your dogs aren’t broken!

🐾Dog training is NOT doing whatever we can in the quickest way possible to “fix” the “bad behavior” while disregarding the health and well-being of the dog.

🐾We are here to use modern, humane and science based training like positive reinforcement, classical & counter conditioning, desensitizing, etc.

🐾We are here to help dogs feel calm, comfortable, safe and happy.

🐾It’s about respecting the dog and working at the dogs pace.

🐾It’s about dedicating our time as certified dog trainers to be growing our knowledge and continuing our ongoing education so we can help dog parents and their dogs.

🐾So no, I’m not going to tell you I can “guarantee” your dogs “bad behaviors” will be “fixed.”

🐾But as a certified dog trainer I am dedicated to help train and guide you and your dog to help build your relationship and work towards your training goals using positive reinforcement and science based training.

When was the last time you gave your dog a choice?

🐾Think about how often people get to make choices. We get to decide when to eat, what to eat, how we spend our time, when we go to the bathroom, where we go when we leave the house, how long we’re gone for etc.

🐾Now think about how many choices your dog gets to make? Most people can’t even think of one choice their dog gets to make!

🐾Thats why giving our dogs the power of choice is one of the best things we can do for our dogs!

🐾There are lots of ways we can give our dogs choices in their day to day lives

Some examples are…

🐾Giving your dog the choice to be pet or not

🐾 Giving your dog the choice to sniff on a
walk

🐾Giving your dog the choice to pick out a toy out of their toy bin

🐾Letting your dog choose where you go on your walk

How will you give your dog a choice today?🐕

Does your dog pay attention to you at home but not anywhere else?

🐾 #1 The environment is too distracting!

🐶To set your dog up for success start practicing your training in a low distraction environment like your back or front yard. Then gradually build up to more distracting environments like the park or on a walk

Does your dog train with kibble at home but won’t pay any attention to the kibble on a walk?

🐾 #2 Use high value food rewards!

🐶 Kibble might be reinforcing enough at home but since we are asking the dog to train in a new or distracting environment we have to make sure we are using a high value food rewards

Are you wanting to take your dog to a high distraction environment with lots of dogs and people but they just won’t listen?

🐾 #3 You have to work at your dogs pace and have realistic goals!

🐶 Training takes practice, patience and repetition. Practicing in various environments and moving at your dogs pace is the best way to reach your training goals!

Do you find yourself asking….

How can I help my reactive/nervous dog feel calm and comfortable with their triggers?

🐾 After evaluating the dog and identifying their triggers I use management, counter conditioning and desensitizing to help reactive or nervous dogs feel comfortable and relaxed around their triggers

🐾 I use the method “Look at that!” LAT by Leslie McDevitt.

🐾By using this method were not teaching the dog to avoid or ignore the trigger.

🐾Instead, we are creating a positive association to the trigger (trigger = food)

🐾 We’re teaching the dog that they can look at the trigger, create space from the trigger, or report the trigger with eye contact instead of having negative emotions & feelings towards it and reacting

🐾 3 important things to remember when working with a reactive or nervous dog is…
-Distance/Threshold from the Trigger
-High value food rewards
-Training at the dogs pace

🐶Do you have a reactive dog that needs help to feel calm and confident around their triggers?

I had a client whose dog would sneak into each bathroom in the house and shred all the toilet paper!

🐾Once we investigated and found the reason the dog was shredding the toilet paper was due to boredom the owner was relieved to hear that there was a quick fix to this problem….

🐾 When the bathroom is not in use you can close the door to manage the environment and keep the dog from rehearsing the shredding behavior on the toilet paper!

🐾 The dog still has a desire to shred so we wanted to make sure to replace shredding toilet paper with a equivalent value enriching activity

🐾So we hid treats in a head of lettuce and had the dog shred through the lettuce to find the treats! We also did this with empty cereal boxes, and toilet paper tubes!

🐾A lot of the time management is paired with training to help guide the dog to set the dog up for success! But sometimes it can be as simple as keeping the door closed!

🐾Remember to always investigate why a behavior is happening so we can fully help the dog be successful and happy!

🐾 By teaching our dogs that they are allowed to choose to engage or disengage we are creating a respectful and trusting relationship with the dog
