Do you struggle with loose leash walking?🐕
These are 3 tips to help you and your dog have a successful loose leash walk!
1. Verbally praise your dog before you deliver a food reward
🐶 It’s important that we communicate to the dog “good!” That’s the behavior we want. Then, we reward the behavior with a food reward. If you have a food reward in your hand before you verbally praise, the dog is going to focus on the food in your hand and struggle to focus on you.
2. Hold your leash in a loose U shape
🐶By keeping our dogs leash nice and loose we’re not only helping the dog feel calm and comfortable by not having tension on the leash. But, we’re also allowing the dog to CHOOSE the rewardable behavior of walking next to us. By giving the dog the power of choice we are allowing the dog to choose the rewardable behavior, then we reinforce it with verbal praise and a food reward. This is much more rewarding for the dog and builds up their self confidence!
3. Deliver your food rewards at your side
🐶We want to deliver food rewards by our side so we are helping set the dog up for success by rewarding and reinforcing where we want the dog to be.

Rocky’s owners and I have been working together to find new creative ways to fulfill Rocky’s enrichment needs. Today we took a head of lettuce and scattered his breakfast in the leaves! He absolutely loved it! He nuzzled through the leaves, rolled around the head of lettuce and even ripped some leaves off to get to the food! Woohoo! What a fun enrichment activity!
