Communication takes place between members of the same species, as well as between heterospecific individuals, such as the long co-habitation process and inter-dependent relationship present in domestic dogs and humans. Dogs engage in visual communication ...

Puppyhood can be a trying time for many new pet owners. Sometimes even experienced owners pick a puppy that ends up being unlike any puppy they'd had before. In fact, I'm hoping this little guy is that for me! This is the first look at Calcifer's new little brother, Garu! He'll be home a week from Thursday, and I am looking forward to showing every step of raising a puppy with you all through this handsome young pup! I love to see how high he holds his chest and how intent his eyes are without the addition of pupil dialation due to overstimulation.

If you or anyone know anyone is looking for follow along guidance as they raise their puppy, share this post to them so they can like our page and follow along with daily posts about raising this beautiful boy. It doesn't matter where they are, this will be valuable to them!

This week I'll be covering what questions you NEED to ask your breeder before purchasing a puppy from them and other puppy prepping tips!

● Top 3 Things to Ask a Breeder
● Picking a Vet
● Neonatal Period
● "Cousin Community"
● Vaccinations
● Puppy Proofing the Home
● Importance of Puppy Classes

Check out this article from 2017 that is just as relevant today as it was 6 years ago. In this one, positive K9 trainer and innovator Steve White talks about why your dog isn't listening to your commands in a high pressure situation.

“Or it could just be that the dog just doesn’t really understand.”

Taking refuge from the California sun in the shade of an oak tree, a dozen cops attended the International K9 Conference’s “Problem-solving” session hoping to

Meet Calamity Jane! Or Clam as her friends know her.

A few weeks ago Calamity decided she didn't like the car or rides. She would refuse to get in the car and once in the car would urinate shortly after leaving. All of this just under a month away from a road trip to Florida!

In just three short weeks of private sessions we got Clam from scared to ready for take off! She's now enjoying her winter in Florida with Mom, and I'm excited to hear all about it when she returns!

All too often we find ourselves in a situation with our dog where they become highly reactive to a particular target. This could be another dog, kids, men, planes, trains, or automobiles.

The important thing to remember is that distance is your friend. People are very quick to punish these behaviors with anything from an e-collar to grabbing their snout and holding it closed. These punishments for communication will cause heavy escalation, and your dog may even snap at you!

Notice how in the first image Rhea is geared up and hyperreactive. We do not want to punish this, but instead find engagement from her so that we can build proper self soothing mechanics through impulse control or relaxation protocols.

Here you can see how Rhea is beginning to show calmer but still interested behaviors after being given the time and distance she needs to disengage from their target and re-engage with Michelle and Zach. This is their opportunity to be patient, wait for engagement, and mark and reward this check in under uncertain circumstances. I find tossing their treat in a short grass area can give them something to re engage in if they’re having trouble focusing on us. If they cannot disengage at all from the target, you are too close!

In the last two photos you’ll see Rhea re engage and then give total focus to Michelle. This is the success we want to see! I have had to start with some dogs as far as 100ft from the target, but once I find a workable distance it is simply about conditioning under repetitive success and closing that distance very slowly over the course of a few weeks.

Hellooo! My name is Zach Van Arsdale. My role here at One of the Pack is the jack of all trades! I'm the friend you know with way too many hobbies- photography, herpetology (the study of reptiles), card games, hiking, anything outdoors is my passion. I often find myself in beautiful scenery or around amazing creatures so it became a natural thing to begin capturing them, so when Pat needed some photography done it was a great opportunity to build my portfolio. Ultimately, my goal is to use my various skills to assist in the conservation and protection of our natural habitats. I also have a Level II certification with the Rattlesnake Conservancy. You will often see me with a camera in my hand, as that is my primary role. However you might see me during a people greet session, assisting in outdoor workshops when quite a few if you are attending at once, and very soon Pat and I will be holding dog-snake safety workshops where we'll teach you how to both keep your dog safe and teach your dog how to respond when they see one! In addition, One of the Pack will soon be offering pet photography sessions for those of you who treat your pet like one of your pack!

Hey guys! My name is Jacob Morgan, and I oversee website development here at One of the Pack! My passion has always lied in games- from board games to video games to games played in the yard- and I don't just like them, I like being good at them. The best times in my family growing up was when we played games as a family. I also enjoy technology and learning about how things work. My natural skillset made it very easy to put a website together for Pat, and I've been told that things look and function really well. I really enjoy what we’re doing, but I'd also like to continue to grow my streaming channel, GrimGameleon13, where I stream video game content and am growing a wonderful community. However, I want to make a game that lasts a lifetime like UNO and Sorry! I'd also like to step into video game development as well. I want to make games that people can enjoy together. I hope to one day assimilate a fantastic game development team and lead projects myself. Outside of the obvious playing games, I like to spend time in and with nature as well. I have 5 tarantulas, a hobby our photographer Zach slowly but surely knew was right for me and helped me get into. I enjoy hiking and being in nature to get away from screens regularly, as I feel that is a very healthy counterbalance and quite honestly a great stress reliever. We as a group play Dungeons & Dragons for team building purposes, but it's my favorite part of the week. As I said before, I manage the website itself- keeping the updates regular and ensuring everything flows and functions properly. If you seek out any type of support through the website or Google, either I or Christina (who you’ll meet soon) will be the one contacting you to resolve your problem.

Now that you've met our snack leader, it's time to meet the Pack leader. Calcifer Bear is a 70lb, 5 years old, purebred Siberian husky. As furry as they usually are, Cal has the recessive "wooly coat" gene that gives him a third layer (because there wasn't enough as it is).

Cal spent the majority of his adolescence in the kennels that his previous owner would hit with pots and pans to submit Cal's natural vocal nature. He also saw physical abuse from males but ensured no one would harm his house sibling.

He has a very protective nature of his Pack, and loves to let the world know it. I used to call him the most independent dog I've ever met, but as he's spent more years in safety and grew into maturity, he's beginning to realize he wants more attention than he originally thought.

Cal has been my demo dog since the beginning, and I learned everything I know about voluntary and positive based training through him.

Catch Cal in our new series where we show you how to get reliable behaviors people think can only be developed with a shock collar.

Hello, and welcome to One of the Pack! My name is Pat Tarver, and I am the snack leader (owner & trainer), and project manager here at One of the Pack. I’m 28 years of age and I live in Fort Collins, Colorado. However, I grew up in Louisiana where my passion for training human-dog tasks such as boar hunting and waterfowl retrieval were instilled, the latter of which I experienced first hand in my daily life. My dream is to change human and dog interactions and allow people to understand how their dog’s brains truly function, creating a dynamic of trust and dedication to each other. Dogs that need to pull can definitely pull- as in mushing or fjorring dogs- but let's pull with cued turns and solid stop commands and work together as a team to do this really fun activity safely! Whether it be curbing reactive behaviors, breaking entitled or demanding behaviors, or training for a job in mind, I’ll be the point of contact for all of your training needs. I can’t wait to work with you and your companion!
