For this meet our team Tuesday we want to feature another wonderful doctor we work with. Dr. Smith grew up in Castle Rock, Colorado and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Animal Science from Colorado State University. He returned to Colorado State University to obtain a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2004. After which, Randy completed a 1 year rotating internship at Wheatridge Animal Hospital and one year of a surgical residency at Texas A&M University. Dr. Smith now has a practice limited to small animal surgery and enjoys both soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. He has completed training at the Center for Advancement of Rigid Endoscopy to learn to perform laparoscopic spays, gastropexies, cryptorchid neuters and liver biopsies. During his time at Texas A&M University, Dr, Smith was trained to perform several arthroscopic procedures. He has had a mobile surgical practice for over 13 years, performing numerous traditional soft tissue and orthopedic procedures in addition to minimally invasive laparoscopic and arthroscopic procedures throughout northern Colorado and southern Wyoming. On top of all that, Dr. Smith is the king of a dad joke, and always makes our team laugh when he's here.

It's been a busy week at FCVEH! A couple days ago we had our fall bake-off challenge, and this one was a technical. The ask was a well risen choux pastry with traditional vanilla cream filling and chocolate ganache topping. This one was judged by our resident baking expert Dr. Hoke, and the winner was technician Joshua with his perfectly round, perfectly shiny, and perfectly sweet treats! Dr. Selvey and CSR Abi were close competition coming in second and third! Our team's talents never fail to impress!

When you have two patients named Lando and two technicians named Kelsi(ey)… how ever will we tell them apart? Lando B is the standard poodle recovering from GDV surgery, and Lando S is the frenchie recovering from aspiration pneumonia and cluster seizures. Two very different dogs, two very different treatment plans, two very wonderful technicians caring for them, two families visiting at the same time when we caught them all moving through the ER in opposite directions.

When you’re only 2 kilograms, even the smallest foreign object can cause an obstruction. Four year old Dorothy Joy, known by her fans (including our whole team) and family as Dot, ate a tile spacer. We confirmed it was whole with xray and surgically removed it. She was the very best patient, and in true chihuahua fashion rested best in the arms of our techs while she was with us. Sweet Dot, maybe stick to dog food and puppy treats from now on!

Minnie is an adorable four year old mixed breed who unfortunately got into the trash at home and caused herself some GI issues. She spent the night with us for some supportive care, which of course included lots of attention from our team. We hope she stays out of the trash and continues to do well at home with her family!

Instead of meet our team Tuesday this week, we just want to share some of the fun pics from our tech week celebration last week. We love to see our team’s creativity and participation in this year’s themes (favorite color, tie dye, spooky season, decades day, cartoon day, and heroes vs villains) almost as much as we love our team.

Part of our tech week celebrations this year included our tech manager, lead trainer and PM attending the career fair to meet vet tech students and tell them about our internship program. The future of vet med is bright, and it’s always refreshing to interact with students who are just falling in love with the field we have chosen for ourselves!

It’s National Veterinary technician week! Here at FCVEH we celebrate with our fall spirit week and make sure our techs and assistants all know how much we appreciate the hard work they do to keep our doors open 24/7/365 with gifts, treats and fun activities. Our clinical support team is made up of 43 amazing RVT’s, veterinary assistants and hospital assistants who make sure every patient who visits our hospital receives excellent care and a little extra love on their path to recovery. Their jobs are physically, mentally and emotionally demanding, and extremely vital to the health of pets in our community. They not only keep our hospital and patients clean, assist with surgery, calculate medications, offer food, gather diagnostic data, and provide treatments, they also comfort clients when they cry, reassure patients when they’re scared or hurting, they also make us laugh every day. This team is *chefs kiss* and we’re grateful they’re ours.

A couple weeks ago, Kaiser ate part of his owner's chemistry goggles. They brought him in and we were able to get him to vomit up the chunks of plastic before they caused an obstruction. He had zero regrets, and we were glad to get to make friends with this handsome guy. Did you know that when we make your pet vomit up something they shouldn't have eaten we treat it like a very gooey puzzle to see how much of the object we are able to get out? Not so glamorous, but dang rewarding.

This meet our team Tuesday is a little different because our feature is an extension of our team. We work closely with Dr Pierre Amsellem, Doct. Vet., MS, Dip. ACVS and ECVS to provide board certified surgery services to patients in our hospital when needed. Dr. Pierre completed a small animal surgery residency at Colorado State University in 2006 and became board certified in small animal surgery in 2007. He then completed surgical oncology fellowship at University of Florida in 2009 to specialize in surgical oncology. After 10 years in academia and a year in a multispecialty referral clinic, Pierre started Colorado Vet Surgical in 2023, which is a mobile surgery practice. He sometimes brings his own technician, Cheyanne Hurn, CVT, with him who joined his team in 2024. She is experienced in emergency medicine, anesthesia, oncology and surgery. She can run anesthesia when needed. They, along with our team, perform orthopedics, soft tissue, oncologic surgery and laparoscopic procedures in various veterinary clinics throughout Colorado.

Ooh, big stretch! Being an employee pet volunteered for ultrasound lab is a hard job, but some cat’s got to do it. Ennis will cooperate, as long as there are butt scratches from the whole team, and belly kisses from mama.

September was su***de prevention month, but su***de prevention is a 365 day quest we are carrying with us into October. In our industry specifically, su***de rates are nearly 3 times more than those in the general public. We are proud to offer our team QPR training, as we did today, and are grateful for the opportunity to have difficult but necessary conversations about mental health regularly and without judgement. Speaking to our entire audience, but especially to our team and our peers in this important and sometimes seemingly impossible field; There are resources available to help you if you are struggling, and we hope you will use them because you are worth it. ***deprevention

For this meet our team Tuesday, we want to introduce one of our technicians, Courtney M! She grew up in Colorado and has lived in fort Collins for 10 years. She has always loved animals and decided to pursue a career in vet med after a 10-year career as a certified nail technician. As a dedicated Registered Veterinary Technician, she found her passion for animal care, and has been working in the industry and developing her skills ever since she graduated from Front Range Community College with an AAS in Veterinary Technology. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband Robert, her two cats Rex and Oatie and her dog Rune. She also has two Crested Geckos, Onion and Igor, as well as a Dekay's Brown Snake named Lasagna. Though she loves all animals, reptiles are her favorite! Please help us welcome her to the team!
