Did you know? The Underdog Team comprises a team of animal welfare advocates 💪🐾💛

Molly, our founder and head trainer -- has over 15 years of experience and has volunteered and worked at numerous animal shelters, runs her own animal rescue, has fostered countless dogs, and used to have a pet sitting business focusing on dogs with behavior needs. She also studied at the Academy for Dog Trainers.

Coral, our Denver-based dog trainer and behavior consultant -- was a mentor for the Petco Northern Colorado district teaching people how to be dog trainers, has volunteered at a shelter, and has fostered numerous dogs through a rescue.

Lily, our office manager -- has run the behavior program and animal care team at a local shelter and has fostered numerous animals.

Hailey, our Head of Marketing and Development -- has worked at several shelters and animal rescues over the last 14 years on both local and national levels.

Your dog doesn’t have separation anxiety. She’s BORED.

The term “Separation Anxiety” gets thrown around a lot these days. And we understand why! Your dog is barking and whining, maybe scratching at the door when you leave. She’s upset, she doesn’t like being alone.

But, is she panicking? Or just throwing a fit?

In the behavior world, “Separation Anxiety” refers to a panic disorder. The dog is experiencing a hormonal reaction, as if she were in mortal danger, when left alone.

When left alone, a dog with SA will exhibit one or more of these…
- Evacuating bowels or bladder every time
- Self mutilating (chewing on paws or tail)
- Destroying exit points (door, door jamb, carpet in front of the door)
- Excessive vocalization, panting or drooling
- Anorexia (won’t eat a T-bone steak if it’s in front of her)

A dog who is merely bored (less than thrilled with the situation) might…
- Occasionally have an accident in the house (usually during long absences)
- Destroy things in the home like shoes and furniture (not doors or windows)
- Get into trash or on the counter (Just good scavenging!)
- Bark periodically or whine

We get it, we know your dog got used to you working from home during the pandemic, and is now feeling a little…abandoned when you leave the house. She’s barking a bit, getting in the trash, maybe she went berserk on a couch cushion or two.

You might be inclined to think “Oh no! She has SA!” but true SA involves much more intense behavior than treating a cushion like a squirrel.

The good news is, it’s more likely that she is a bit bored and a bit sad, and solutions for her are easier than you might think.

Increase her enrichment, exercise her before leaving, and maybe even hire someone to walk her during the day while you’re away.

And if she’s getting worse and not better, call us :)
