Snowy Range Maine Coons

Snowy Range Maine Coons Showing and Sharing our beloved Maine C***s We fell in love with Maine C***s back in 2009 and found our first Maine C**n, Aengus, a big red boy.

Because of Aengus, we now have 6 additional Maine C***s in our household, as well as kittens from time to time. We are a small cattery by design, registered with both CFA and TICA, and only have a few litters each year. The kittens are raised by all the other kitties and our Labrador Retriever, Murphy. They are very well socialized by friends, neighbors and family members. All of our breeding cat

s are screened with genetic testing, hip and knee x-rays, regular echocardiograms, vet visits, and vaccinations. We breed first for health, next for socialization, and finally for alignment with the Maine C**n breed standards. There is absolutely nothing that compares with having a Maine C**n in your life! They are goofy, inquisitive, "helpful", sweet, gentle, and smart (think living with a perpetual pre-schooler). Feel free to contact us if you would like information about the breed or if you are looking for a magnificent companion. We frequently exhibit at the CFA cat shows and you can often find us at one showing off one of our beloved Maine C***s.

THIS!!!

Animals, like us, are living souls.
They are not things. They are not objects.
Neither are they human.
Yet they mourn. They love. They dance.
They suffer.
They know the peaks and chasms of being..

During the upcoming gift giving season, please remember living animals are not "gifts" to give and be returned after the holidays. They are commitments for life, not trash to be thrown out with the wrapping paper.

Please donā€™t kill a cat based a single combo test.

Another supposed Felv (aka Feline Leukemia) positive cat we pulled that tested positive at the shelter is actually negative! This has happened repeatedly this year. The thought these cats are carelessly discarded is crushing my heart. These tests are fallible. They give false positives, or the vet or shelter reads them wrong or the test is compromised. It is happening too often!

So much new information is available about Felv. Itā€™s not black and white. Felv cats can live happy, although possibly shorter, lives. There is a vaccine to protect other cats. Not all Felv is fatal. Please do your homework before making a final decision about that catā€™s life! Vets may not even know all the new information available.

Please get a second test done. Use IDEXX tests if possible. They are excellent tests.

Almost every street cat we have taken in has FIV. FIV cats can live long normal lives, there is never a good reason to kill them just with that diagnosis. We canā€™t kill our way out of FIV. Itā€™s rampant.

This is Ginger. She almost lost her life in a shelter because she tested positive for Felvā€¦.but she does not have Felv. šŸ˜”

This kitty litter cake may scare some people at first glance, but once they taste it, they'll be back for more! It's great for Halloween or kids' parties.

I copied this post from a breeder friend of mine. It so poignantly captures the relationship that we, as breeders, have with our beloved kittens, and asks that you understand what we hope from you when you bring one of our furry little kids into your family and life.

This is doing the rounds today, as it should, itā€™s well written and a heartfelt sentiment. I do wish I knew the author, to thank them for putting these words together -

šŸ’•Your Responsibility to your BreederšŸ’•
We talk a lot about what a good breeder is expected to do for you. We require them to health test their breeding cats, guarantee the health and temperament of each kitten, be there for you 24/7 for up to 18 years ā€” longer than most other relationships you are likely to have in your life.
We havenā€™t really talked about your responsibilities to your breeder.
I have done a lot of thinking. Breeders tend to be very private people. They donā€™t tell you about the three weeks they spend getting almost no sleep except for quick naps next to the kitten pen because Mother Cat needs some help. Maybe her milk hasnā€™t come in. Maybe her mothering instincts are a little slow to arrive. Maybe she wants you to show her how to be a mum. Maybe she died. Regardless, those first three weeks with kittens are often more intense than the first three weeks with a human infant.
Feeding six or eight kittens every two hours is exhausting. We havenā€™t got our mother-in-laws, husbands or best friends here to help us. Struggling kittens count on us to be their ICU nurse. It is no surprise that our maternal (or paternal) instincts go full bore on us, and we bond to these guys for life.
Not everything goes well with every kitten in every litter. Losing a kitten is deeply traumatic. We fight so hard to save them and often canā€™t. Death is not pretty. Death is graphic. It is not peaceful. It leaves a scar on our soul.
After we get through the first three weeks, we spend nearly every waking moment watching, thinking, analyzing, cuddling, loving and, inevitably, bonding. Could you hold a baby in your lap and not feel anything? Neither can we. By the time your kitten leaves our house, that kitten is as much a part of our heart as it is yours.
Things go wrong. We get that. Best intentions fade through no fault of our own. Maybe a job was lost. Maybe the terms of your rental agreement changed. Maybe someone in our family became sick and needs all our attention. Maybe one of a million things.
Breeders get that. We are people, too. We have lived as much life as you have. We know the world is not a perfect place. We also know that sometimes, despite our best intentions, we mismatched your kitten to you.
Whatever the reason, we know that not every kitten is going to live its full life with the people we placed it with. Divorce, death, gosh, anything can happen.
But we love our babies (and we love you), and we want to be here to help. If you can no longer keep your cat, please be open and communicative. If your cat has a close relationship with someone else, let us know. That contract you signed with us? The one that guarantees health and our lifetime assistance? That applies to the kitten, no matter who owns him/her.
But more importantly, please be kind to our hearts. If you lost a grandchild ā€” say your son and his wife were divorced and the wife cuts off all communication with you ā€” that would hurt. You would feel sad, lost, a little panicky.
Thatā€™s how we feel when we lose track of a kitten.
So, please. Stay in contact with your breeder. Let him or her share in your catā€™s joys and frustrations. Let them be a shoulder for you. Let them provide a listening ear and support. And please, please, please let them know where your cat is, and if you canā€™t keep it, please let them be involved in any placements that may need to occur.ā™„ļøšŸ¾ā™„ļø

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
An appeal that is always useful to spread and remember...
Temperatures are changing, nights and days are starting to get colder outside, and cats living on the streets are looking for a warm place to shelter.
Touch the hood, slightly kick the tires and honk before starting the car!

2024 CFA INTERNATIONAL SHOW
This is a show brag and a Thank You!!!

Crazy Maizie and I attended the CFA International Show in Cleveland, Ohio this past weekend where we met kitties, exhibitors, vendors, performers, judges and visitors from all over the world. We had an outstanding time! Maizie did very well as a young female Grand Champion against some much older and larger Maine C***s in Championship, making 3 finals. A big Thank You to the judges who found a place for her in their very competitive finals! She also had an absolute blast running the Agility Course and ended up as the 4th highest scoring cat in the show with a time of 8.6 seconds. She delighted the many visitors playing and interacting with them, showing off her classic Maine C**n characteristics. I couldnā€™t be more proud of this girl! Also, a huge Thank You to all the hundreds of folks who worked to pull this show together and make it an unforgettable experience.

If your cat is diagnosed with FIP or this nasty disease is suspected, it is no longer a death sentence. The treatment is now legal and available in the U. S. and is reasonably affordable.

Over the last few years great progress has been made in the treatment of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). This previously deadly disease in cats can now be successfully managed with proper treatment.
