Shrimp and Parker are brothers and were in for dental procedures with Dr. Hunter. Shrimp insisted on some extra lovin', which we were happy to provide. She did need to have some teeth pulled, afterall, and that means you get all the love.

They both recovered well and are doing well at home now. We're so very happy to care for these two puppers.

It's peach season in Colorado and we were so happy to meet Peaches, a six-month-old maltese mix, who is the absolute cutest. She is being fostered by Bounce Animal Rescue and was in to be spayed. She was feeling no pain afterward as she was cuddled up in warm blankets on her back while recovering. What an absolute gem. We know she's going to find a forever home very quickly! If you are looking to add a furry friend to your home, check out Bounce and submit an application: https://bounceanimalrescue.org/adoptable-animals/

Dr. Carly Flink and our technician Heather, who is starting her third year of vet school at CSU, recently attended a dentistry training course with the incomparable Dr. MJ Redman at Animal Dental Care & Oral Surgery. The intensive program helped them hone their burgeoning skills in extracting teeth in dogs and cats.

Good dental care is key to every pet’s overall health. Your pet’s teeth and gums should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian for early signs of problems and to keep your pet’s mouth healthy.

Chilly is our new tech Sophie's golden retriever and he's been such a help around the clinic! He's very attentive learning how to prepare slides and how things work around here. And he was very happy to give moral support to another golden puppy who was in to see Dr. Flink.

Since moving to Fort Collins from Australia, we're told Chilly has become obsessed with squirrels to the exclusion of all else, so we got him a little stuffed squirrel of his own to enjoy. We hope it helps his obsession wane.

You may not realize this, but cats can do well on a leash. Carrot, a five-month-old kitten was back in to see us recently and is doing well on a leash as you can see! He did react to a dog coming in the door, but went back to exploring.

Here's a short story about cat's on leashes you might also enjoy:

Thanks to Carrot's wonderful family for allowing us to share his videos. We love caring for this sweet guy!

Sophie has also joined our staff as of Thursday last week and we're so happy to have her! She's had quite an adventurous life so far. Sophie was born in The Netherlands. After studying veterinary nursing in Belgium, she moved to Australia for an internship and wound up staying for almost eight years. There she saw many kinds of Australian wildlife in the clinic — kangaroos, opossums and echidnas. (We're so intrigued!)

Sophie recently moved to Fort Collins, sight unseen, and so far loves it! Her mom is from Iowa, but Sophie never made it to Colorado but trusted it would be a good place for her. Her beautiful retriever is Chilly and together they plan to explore the wilds of the Front Range and Western Slope.

We are elated to introduce you to Luke (and Calcifer), who joined our team this past Monday. Luke is a technician working toward his certification and has worked in vet med since graduating in 2021.

A native of Wisconsin, Luke has been in Colorado for awhile now. He graduated from CU Boulder and recently relocated to Fort Collins while his partner attends CSU. Luke loves to cook and is a sports enthusiast in volleyball, rock climbing and snowboarding -- so Colorado sounds like a good place for him!

We know MVMC is a great place for Luke, too, and are so happy to welcome him to our team!

Meeting new patients is so much fun, especially when they are as cute and sweet as 11-week-old Cooper. We really enjoyed all the snuggles and kisses and the puppy breath! Oh, yes, puppy breath! He is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Cooper has expressive, soulful eyes give them a very distinctive look, contributing to their charm and appeal.

Cooper had just come to his new home and then came right in to see Dr. Hunter for his first check up on Thursday. Diagnosis: cuter than cute! Oh, and he had an umbilical hernia, but that was easily fixed by Dr. Hunter.

We are excited to see Cooper grow up in the years to come. He's just so precious.

Awww, Murphy! This is the most adorable face! We are so so happy to get to know Murphy, who was in for his first MVMC visit this morning with Dr. McCarthy. He's a little over a year old and his family just moved to Fort Collins from Hawaii, so he's still adjusting to the altitude and working on becoming a Colorado dog.

We're so happy to care for this little muffin and we appreciate his family's trust in our team. Welcome to Fort Collins, Murphy! We think you'll love it here.

Leptospirosis is an infection found all over the world, including in Fort Collins. It’s carried by wildlife including squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, small rodents, and many others. These infected animals shed the leptospirosis organism in their urine, from which our domestic dogs can be infected – usually through eating or licking grass where wildlife has urinated, drinking out of ponds or rivers, or even from hunting and eating small rodents.
Leptospirosis causes severe liver and kidney disease and is often fatal if undiagnosed and treated. Leptospirosis is the most widespread infection transmitted between animals and human species in the world. It can be spread through soil, water, bedding, and infected urine from pets and wildlife.
We recommend a series of leptospirosis vaccines in puppies and periodic boosters throughout life for adult dogs. About 80% to 90% of dogs with leptospirosis develop kidney problems that may put them at risk for kidney failure.
The signs of leptospirosis in dogs can vary. Some infected dogs do not show any signs of illness, some have mild illness and recover, while others develop severe illness, which can even result in death.
Signs of leptospirosis can include
• Fever
• Muscle tenderness
• Increased thirst
• Changes in urination
• Vomiting and diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
Talk to your veterinarian to learn more about your pet’s risk for leptospirosis.

Aw, this little mitten is Frost. She's a year old and was recently adopted by her family. Frost is a real night owl, keeping them up with her shenanigans as she settles into her new home and routine.

Dr. Hunter gave Frost a clean bill of heath at her first vet visit at Midtown Veterinary Medical Center. We're hoping she'll settle in quickly with her new family. We are so happy to meet this little one.

Bugsy is a big fan of the dental chews! He wouldn't lay down in the exam room until Dr. Hunter gave him a sample of a CET HEXtra chew. (These chews contain beefhide for a natural abrasive cleansing action that helps keep teeth clean and breath fresh and are one alternative to teethbrushing.)

This sweet big boy is an eight-year-old Great Dane. He was in Saturday for routine wellness.

Ouchy ouchy! Sandy broke her toenail playing ball and came in to have Dr. Hunter fix it. She had her foot bandaged for a few days and came back for a recheck this morning. Everything looks great so the bandage came off today. Yay, Sandy! Keep healing, girl! Watch out for those tennis balls.

The face of a Persian kitty is something to behold. This stunning boy is Ming Ming. He is really not feeling well, so came in to see us yesterday. Hopefully with some treatments from Dr. McCarthy our furry friend will be feeling much better soon. We'll keep in touch with his family to be sure he's on a swift road to recovery.

Ming Ming is affectionate like most Persians. He shares his home with a small parakeet and they are pals. Sadly, Ming Ming lost his bunny pal a while back. That was a big blow to this big-hearted guy. Thanks to his lovely family for allowing us to share Ming Ming here. It's an honor to care for him.

Wildfire smoke and animals
As irritating as smoke can be to people, it can cause health problems for animals as well. Smoke from wildfires and other large blazes affects pets, horses, livestock and wildlife. If you can see or feel the effects of smoke yourself, you also should take precautions to keep your animals – both pets and livestock – safe.

Animals with cardiovascular or respiratory disease are especially at risk from smoke and should be closely watched during all periods of poor air quality. Look for the following signs of possible smoke or dust irritation in animals. If any of your animals are experiencing any of these signs, please consult your veterinarian.

~ Coughing or gagging
~ Difficulty breathing, including open mouth breathing and increased noise when breathing
~ Eye irritation and excessive watering
~ Inflammation of throat or mouth
~ Nasal discharge
~ Asthma-like symptoms
~ Increased breathing rate
~ Fatigue or weakness
~ Disorientation or stumbling
~ Reduced appetite and/or thirst

Our buddy Dobby, who is a frequent flyer at MVMC, was in for an abdominal ultrasound yesterday. Dobby is a three-year-old standard poodle, who suffers from IBD, or inflammatory bowel disease. This causes him frequent GI issues. For most patients IBD is a life-long condition but it is manageable. Dobby just goes on living his best life -- he has boundless energy and is friends with everyone!

Dr. Hunter and our team follow Dobby closely. The ultrasound will provide information on how well his IBD is being controlled with current therapies or if his treatment plan needs to be adjusted.

Dobby was such a good boy hanging out with us. We love his irrepressible spirit!

We're so happy to meet Luca who was in to see Dr. Flink today for a first vet visit with Midtown Vet Med Center. Luca is an adorable nine-year-old papillion, who's definitely more puppy than adult dog. Little dog, big personality! He was so happy to put his "butterfly" ears on full display, as you can see.

Though we just met Luca, we are smitten! He rolls over for belly rubs so quick -- and he loves cheese and Zuke's treats! What an absolute sweetheart. He didn't mind Dr. Flink giving him a vaccine, or checking him out head-to-tail. Thanks to his family for entrusting his care to our team and for allowing us to share this special boy here.

Preparing Dogs for Back-to-School Time
By Barbara Balfour for American Kennel Club

Back-to-school time means people will be out of the house more often. With most kids going back physically to school, schedule changes can be stressful for dogs. The sudden switch from long summer days of playing with the kids to living in an empty home for a period of time can be a tough adjustment for dogs. Here are some tips from behavioral experts on making this yearly seasonal transition as smooth as possible for your dog.

• Curb Boredom
• Ease Your Pet into a New Routine
• Determine Bathroom Breaks
• Do a Trial Run with Background Noise
• Consider Taking Your Pet to a Class
• Get Up Early to Exercise Your Dog
• Harness the Power of Distraction
• Strengthen the Human-Canine Bond

Helping those evacuated by the Alexander Mountain wildfire in Larimer County, CO, can make a significant difference in their recovery process. Here are some ways to provide support:
1. Donate Money: Cash donations are often the most flexible and efficient way to help. Organizations like the American Red Cross, local community foundations, and wildfire relief funds can use the money to meet immediate needs and support long-term recovery efforts.
2. Contribute Supplies: Check with local organizations to see what specific items are needed. Commonly requested items include non-perishable food, bottled water, hygiene products, and clothing. Make sure to donate only what is requested to avoid overwhelming relief centers.
3. Volunteer Your Time: Reach out to local nonprofits or disaster response organizations to see if they need volunteers. Tasks might include sorting donations, helping with shelters, or assisting with administrative tasks. Check with the Disaster Response Volunteer: https://cdphe.colorado.gov/volunteer-in-a-disaster
4. Offer Shelter or Temporary Housing: If you have the capacity, consider offering temporary housing or accommodation for those displaced. Be sure to coordinate with local emergency services or shelters to ensure your offer aligns with their needs.
5. Support Local Businesses: Many businesses in affected areas may struggle during and after a disaster. Supporting them by shopping locally or using their services can help with economic recovery.
6. Spread Awareness: Use social media or community boards to share information about where people can donate, volunteer, or get help. Raising awareness can mobilize more resources and support.
7. Stay Informed and Prepared: Understand the specific needs of those affected by staying updated with local news and official announcements. This ensures that your support is timely and relevant.
8. Offer Professional Services: If you have skills in areas like mental health support, legal advice, or financial planning, offering pro bono services can be incredibly valuable.
9. Participate in Fundraisers: Join or organize fundraisers to support wildfire relief efforts. This can include charity runs, auctions, or community events.
By focusing your efforts on these areas, you can make a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by the wildfire in Larimer County.
EVACUATION INFO:
For evacuating horses: Colorado Horse Rescue at https://horsealert.org/ connects horse owners in need with handlers with trailers to move horses. Free and available across Colorado.
Those under mandatory evacuation can bring livestock to The Ranch on Arena Circle in Loveland; animals smaller than goats can be cared for at NOCO Humane Society's Larimer Campus.

Those not in mandatory evacuation zones can take their animals to Island Grove Regional Park in Greeley.

There's a new member of the pack in the home of our friends Anneliese and Danny, They recently welcomed a baby girl named Sloane. We are so happy to finally meet her! She is absolutely beautiful and seems to take all the dogs and cats at her home in stride. Today they also brought along Tucker, Meatloaf and Guacamole for their wellness exam and vaccines, but all the focus was on baby girl.

We are so excited to watch little Sloane grow up and we're so honored to care for the rest of the pack!
