Hard frost tonight means that I need to say goodbye to all my summer friends and relatives that were still able to be here. The last cut of flowers, the little native bees, all the tomatoes and peppers that tried to ripen and yes, even to the grasshoppers. Bye friends, get good rest and I'll see you in the Spring.

Today, on this International Day of the girl, I give gratitude for all my ancestors but especially the women who were all once young girls. Innocent and beautiful, strong hearts and minds grew into the wise women who were all life-givers and gave me life.

I honor all the joy and strength that girls hold.

I ask each person to consider what type of world we want the next generation of girls to grow up in. Who should be their examples? What type of person will be the leader who will empower and honor them? How are we ensuring the space for them to be their true selves?

Who knows, maybe everyone will look up and discover a starry sky and decide to turn off lights and close curtains every night. Wouldn't that be something?

Good news on the farm this morning.

Two things: First, tomorrow is Community Cider Day AND...I just learned that it's Natl. Apple Day! What perfect luck. Secondly guess who just arrived...Baby chicks. Not only are they part of the farm family but they belong in the work of The Young Stewards Program, a project that teaches stewardship in a farm setting that is rooted in reciprocity. If you know someone 9-17 years who wants to be a caretaker of the earth, give them our info.

A big storm just moved through dumping lots of hail on us. We ran out of the office to mitigate the inevitable flooding in the basement. As soon as the worst had passed, Matt hollered to "look at the super bright rainbow!" Here is a snippet of the storm from inside the office.
