Target training- TOUCH
“Target training”
Essentially this boils down to training an animal to touch a target 🎯 with a part of their body (nose, paw). It’s so fundamental to many ways of training and behavior modification- it’s worth teaching your dog it too!
I like a simple touch cue-teaching your dog to target their nose to your palm. This is especially useful for reactive dogs (depending on their “why”, but can redirect their attention to you, and associate trigger with their new cue), can be used when your dog needs redirection instead of being over excited when that doggy friend is coming, you can even use it to prevent jumping up on guests. The uses are endless!
STEP 1-
Charge up a marker such as YES or a clicker. Every time you feed your dog a treat, say or use your marker.
STEP 2-
Hold a treat (preferably tasty) in your hand and close your fingers around it. Hold it out in front of you towards your dogs face. As soon as their nose touches your hand, MARK yes or click, and open your hand to let them eat the treat.
STEP 3- continue the same as above, but before your dog targets your hand say the cue TOUCH, just before the do it. Start saying the cue sooner and sooner before they touch your hand. Until the point of which you’re saying Touch , THEN presenting your hand.
STEP 4-
Remove the treat from your palm, and ask for your cue TOUCH. Present your hand, have it palm out, without any food. Mark when they target and give them a treat.
STEP 5- proofing. Start asking for the cue touch when you are further away, move your hand up higher and lower to get your dog to stretch. Change the environment that
You’re asking for touch in-they can do it in the kitchen but can they do it in the bathroom? The yard? On a walk?
How do you use target training? Does your dog love the touch cue already? I’d love to know more about how it fits or could fit into your lives!

Destruction box fun
🚨DESTRUCTION BOX FUN!! 🚨
I just got my wisdom teeth removed yesterday so I am not feeling too up to playing with Bandy girl right now-this destruction box is a great alternative to getting your dogs energy out and their brain working 🤩 clients usually worry that this is reinforcing the destructive behavior and makes it more likely that their dog will do this to their home. Amazingly, this activity will make it LESS likely that your dog will destroy your possessions, as it gives them an outlet for their natural behavior. Not only this, but it’s a great way to destress your dog after a long day, and a great way to feed them their daily food allowance too 👏👏

What is in a name? Why is it important to know what their name means as a cue?
When we first teach our dogs their given name, we focus on rewarding any attention. However, once we go beyond puppyhood, the training of their name as a cue fades into the background as other training takes center stage.
Their name is the most important cue that your dog knows. It is the cue I use before asking anything else with a dog I am training, as this way I know if they are ready to learn.
My favorite use of a name cue is for reactive dogs. You can get out of many sticky situations with a happy name cue and redirection. You can use it to do a quick U turn away from potential triggers, which maintains our management (management is our BEST FRIEND).
TOP TIP- keep their name fun! We want them to hear their name and think Name=Good things coming. So keep those treats and toys nearby for everytime they successfully respond to their name.
Bandit's name means "Hey can you stop and look at me please? When you do, you get awesome tug of war".
