Sharing what Emmet County Animal Shelter said, as it couldn’t be worded better!!
Once the money stops the selling will too!!
This isn’t a ‘don’t buy a dog from a breeder post’ although we advocate for adopting BECAUSE there are too many dogs and cats that don’t have a home and we don’t need MORE of them until the numbers improve…
This is a know better, be better….do better post!
Do your research! Don’t ever ever buy a dog if you don’t get to meet the parents! Don’t buy dogs from parking lots, parks, pet stores, Farm and Home stores (and so many more places) and only buy a dog from a breeder that specializes in a specific breed or two. If they have dogs of many breeds and mixed breeds they are not worried about the breed standard and quality….they are worried about breeding something they can sell!
Get references. Call the veterinary clinics that are local to the breeder and ask them what they know. See if the adults are brought in for wellness exams and are the puppies brought in for check ups.
Never get puppies under 9-10 weeks of age. Breeders selling pups younger than that are interested in getting your money not setting you up for success. Pups learn a lot from each other during the 7-9 and preferably 10 week mark. The things they learn during that time correlate to them being better adjusted as adults.
NEVER buy two pups at the same time. If a breeder tries to sell you two pups….they want money. Check out Sibling Syndrome. A reputable breeder or shelter will not sell or adopt two pups to one household.
Bottom line….be smart. Be part of the solution. Help put a stop to the problem. You can help by using your money. Only buy a dog from a reputable breeder. The puppy mills and backyard breeders will stop making more if they STOP MAKING MONEY!!!
Iowa is once again near the top of the list for dog breeders named in the Humane World for Animals' annual 'Horrible Hundred' list
