Training Tip Thursday

Let's call it exposure...
Dog Owners are concerned about ensuring their dog is well socialized but what is actual socialization?

Socialization is neutrality!

This means not getting so excited they cannot follow simple directions, or so scared they are trying to hide or reactive.

Take your dog places and have them just relax beside you and take in the environment. Exposure helps develop neutrality.

It's crucial to provide dogs with outlets for their genetic behaviors because these innate tendencies play a significant role in their overall well-being and mental health. Take, for example, Huskies, bred for pulling sleds over long distances in harsh Arctic conditions. This genetic background instills a strong desire to run and pull. Without an appropriate outlet for this energy, Huskies may become frustrated or engage in destructive behaviors. Similarly, Border Collies possess a natural instinct to herd, a behavior honed through generations of selective breeding for working livestock. Without opportunities to exercise this instinct, Border Collies may exhibit obsessive behaviors or become anxious. By understanding and embracing these genetic predispositions, owners can provide suitable activities such as sledding or agility courses for Huskies, or herding trials and obedience training for Border Collies. These outlets not only satisfy the dogs' innate needs but also strengthen the bond between owner and pet while promoting physical and mental stimulation essential for their overall happiness and fulfillment.

Reactivity in dogs refers to a heightened response to certain stimuli, such as other dogs, people, or objects, which can lead to excessive barking, lunging, or pulling on the leash. Unlike aggression, which is typically motivated by a desire to harm or intimidate, reactive behavior stems from fear, anxiety, or frustration. Dogs that are reactive may display these behaviors as a defensive mechanism, often triggered by perceived threats or unfamiliar situations. Reactivity can manifest in various intensities, from mild alertness to intense reactions that may appear aggressive but are rooted in fear rather than hostility. Understanding and addressing reactivity involves identifying triggers, managing the dog's environment to reduce stressors, and using positive reinforcement techniques to modify behavior and help the dog feel more confident and secure in challenging situations.

Teaching your dog to heel by your side can be simple with these easy steps:

1. Choose a quiet, distraction-free area for training and position your dog on your left side.
2. Hold a treat in your left hand at your dog’s nose level and use the command “heel.”
3. Start walking slowly, keeping the treat slightly ahead of your dog to maintain their focus.
4. Praise and reward your dog when they stay by your side.
5. If your dog pulls ahead or lags behind, stop walking, use the “heel” command, and wait for them to return to your side before continuing. You can also turn and walk the other way to keep your dog engaged and keep them guessing on where you'll go next!

Practice regularly and be patient. With consistent training, your dog will learn to walk by your side. If you need any help with leash manners contact us today!

When it comes to bringing a new pet into your home, it's crucial to adopt or shop responsibly. Adopting from a shelter or rescue not only gives a deserving animal a second chance but also helps reduce the number of homeless pets. Shelters often have a wide variety of animals, including purebreds, and they can match you with a pet that fits your lifestyle. If you choose to buy from a breeder, ensure they are reputable and prioritize the health and well-being of their animals. Responsible breeders will provide a clean environment, proper medical care, and socialization for their puppies. Avoid purchasing from pet stores or online sellers where animals might come from puppy mills, which often prioritize profit over animal welfare, leading to poor living conditions and health issues. Research and visit the breeder or adoption center, ask questions, and make sure you are prepared for the responsibilities of pet ownership. By adopting or shopping responsibly, you can help promote animal welfare and find a healthy, happy companion.

Sometimes it can be hard to get everyone on board about training the family dog, here are some tips to get started!

1. Consistency: Ensure all family members use the same commands and rules to avoid confusing the dog. Consistent training helps reinforce good behavior and makes learning easier for your dog.

2. Positive reinforcement: Reward your dog with treats, praise, or playtime for following commands and displaying good behavior. This encourages them to repeat the desired actions.

3. Short training sessions: Keep training sessions brief, around 5-10 minutes, to maintain your dog's attention and prevent them from getting bored or frustrated.

4. Clear commands: Use simple, one-word commands such as "sit," "stay," or "come." Speak in a clear, firm voice to ensure your dog understands what you are asking.

5. Patience and persistence: Training takes time and repetition. Be patient with your dog and continue practicing regularly, even if progress seems slow. Celebrate small successes along the way.

Here are three fun tricks to teach your dog and how to teach them:

1. High Five
How to Teach:
- Step 1: Start with your dog in a sitting position.
- Step 2: Hold a treat in your hand and show it to your dog.
- Step 3: Slowly move the treat towards your dog while holding your palm up.
- Step 4: When your dog lifts a paw to reach for the treat, gently touch their paw and say "High Five."
- Step 5: Give your dog the treat and lots of praise.
- Step 6: Repeat several times, gradually adding the verbal cue "High Five" before your dog lifts their paw.

2. Spin
How to Teach:
- Step 1: Hold a treat close to your dog's nose to get their attention.
- Step 2: Move your hand in a circle, guiding your dog to follow the treat with their nose.
- Step 3: As your dog follows the treat and completes a spin, say "Spin" and give them the treat.
- Step 4: Practice this a few times a day until your dog can spin on command without the treat lure.
- Step 5 Gradually reduce the hand movement and rely more on the verbal cue "Spin."

3. Roll Over
How to Teach:
- Step 1: Start with your dog in a lying down position.
- Step 2: Hold a treat close to your dog's nose and move your hand towards their shoulder to encourage them to lie on their side.
- Step 3: Continue moving your hand in a circular motion, guiding your dog to roll over onto their back and then onto their other side.
- Step 4: Once your dog completes the roll, say "Roll Over" and give them the treat.
- Step 5: Practice regularly until your dog can roll over on command with minimal hand gestures.

Why shouldn’t you play with a laser with your dog?

- **Behavioral Issues**: Playing with lasers can trigger obsessive behavior in dogs. Since they can never catch or interact with the small, moving light dot, dogs may become frustrated and anxious, leading to compulsive behaviors.

- **Eye Safety Concerns**: Directing laser beams into a dog's eyes can cause serious eye damage or even blindness. The concentrated light can harm the sensitive structures of the eye, making it a risky play option.

- **Alternative Play Options**: Instead of lasers, consider using toys that dogs can physically interact with, such as balls, ropes, or interactive puzzle toys. These alternatives provide mental stimulation and physical activity without the risks associated with laser play.

By choosing safe and engaging play activities, you can ensure your dog remains happy, healthy, and free from unnecessary risks associated with laser play.
