The growly Rottweiler? Yes,…. Some said his growls were aggressive. Some didn’t like the “looks” he gave. 🤦♀️
🐕Though we always approach dogs by temperament, having knowledge of breed specific tendencies is very helpful. In this case, it likely prevented Tank from taking a final walk to the vet💀.
🤔Some breeds vocalize more and or differently than others, hence the “Rottie Rumble”. In addition, they were bred to be suspicious of strangers and vigilant guard dogs. They require a period of acclimation and relationship building!
💪Again, as dog professionals, especially in the shelter and rescue community, we’re not permitted to dislike any one particular dog. If you do, I’m sure you can learn, “want fries with that?”, and explore other employment. Or, just mind your business. We must be objective regarding behavior and likelihood of successful adoption.
🙏So, yes…. Tank, the rumbly Rottweiler went home two days ago with his phenomenal humans after 6 months in the shelter. Thank you to all who interacted with our persistent stories featuring him. We’re also tremendously grateful to the few folks who trusted our assessment of Tank. We couldn’t be happier with his outcome and the overall impact of benevolent leadership.

📞We were called by the Clifton Animal Shelter last week about Dasher, the Anatolian Shepherd, found on Christmas Eve.
😢They asked for a rehabilitation and adopter integration program for this fearful girl. We’ll be working closely with them and her adopters in order to address canine insecurity. @basakrichardson

😀Anyone, in my direct experience, who has ever referred to an e-collar/ remote collar as a “SHOCK collar”, knew nothing about the device.
🚫They’re not designed to “shock”, they send static stimulation similar to chiropractic TENS units. In the proper application of communication with the dog, you wouldn’t even feel it if it were on you!
👍”E” stands for “electronic” not “electric”.
👉They have vibration and tone features! Not just static stimulation!
👉Remote/ e-collars represent fun to many dogs and they run towards their people when they hear or see their collars!
😀The positive association speaks for itself, especially with my dog, Gunvald!
🔧🪛🪚The remote collar is a tool! Any training tool can be used incorrectly or be intentionally abusive! Flat collars can collapse a trachea and even food can be abusive! It’s all about the person using the tools.

😫Is your dog dragging you through the door to begin the walk?
😢Does he or she whine, cry or pant when you’re in the car?
👉It all starts way before the actual event. If you announce feeding time or park visits energetically or enthusiastically you are attaching instability to said event, sounds and objects. (For example, “go for a ride”, keys and car and the ride itself)
🤪When we announce feeding time to Fluffy, the dog experiences arousal, aka epinephrine production, then we introduce food which produces a dopamine response, hence rewarding the dog for its arousal or hyper excitement!
🐕Dogs process the world through their snouts. They’re a NON VERBAL species. They know sounds. The sound of the food bag is all they need.
💪Be a person of action for your dog! Just do what you’re going to do! Don’t say anything. This provides more clear and CALM or stable communication therefore making you the benevolent leader.
