It is with great sadness that we announce the passing this morning of Pampered Pooch's founder and guiding force, Barbara Segel. For 25 years she made it her mission to maintain a "home away from home" for dogs whose owners had to be away from them. She will be missed. But her vision will continue continue as her husband, Harris, carries on with boarding and day care for for dogs in southwest Florida

Dogs really did make us feel a little better
Research shows that a person's cortisol levels decline and oxytocin levels rise after spending five to 20 minutes interacting with a dog, and interacting with dogs may reduce stress and boost cognitive processes in children.

You don't even have to own one. Research shows just 5 to 20 minutes interacting with other people's pooches can reduce stress hormones and increase well-being.

"Some 500 golden retrievers and their owners met up in the Scottish Highlands last week to celebrate the birth of the first golden retriever puppy 155 years ago. The "Guisachan Golden Gathering" occurs every five years and brings together dog owners from as far away as New Zealand. The Guisachan mansion—now a ruin—was owned by Scottish business-man and politician Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, whobred a flat-coated retriever and a tweed water spaniel to produce the first golden retriever litter. Owners frolicked with their dogs, and many grew emotional. "To see them all together was just so special," said English dog owner Deborah Robbins."

Why it matters: An online survey of pet owners found that inflation is taking a toll, and many have cut back on food subscriptions, prescription medications, boarding and veterinary care for their pets. Some state and national organizations might be able to help pet owners....

Philosophy of dogs
Today, our pets may be our best means of connection to nature. Jean Grenier is perhaps most famous for having been the philosophy professor of French Existentialist Albert Camus, yet he was also the author of one of the most unusual books about (hu)man’s best friend: “Considerations on the Death of a Dog, ” a series of essays on the loss of his beloved pet Taiaut. Toward the end of the book, Grenier notes that he sees no reason to separate dogs from people, arguing that qualities we think of as quintessentially human — such as tenderness or a desire for familiarity — are as much a part of a dog’s disposition as our own.

Union leaders are often portrayed as disruptors willing to inconvenience the rest of society if their group’s demands aren’t met. And those who actually get the public relations right are often seen to have compromised on the core interests of workers. But a new breed of union leaders and activi...

“Pets, it turns out, also have last wishes before they die, but only known by veterinarians who put old and sick animals to sleep. Twitter user Jesse Dietrich asked a vet what was the most difficult part of his job.

The specialist answered without hesitation that it was the hardest for him to see how old or sick animals look for their owners with the eyes of their owners before going to sleep. The fact is that 90 % of owners don't want to be in a room with a dying animal. People leave so that they don't see their pet leave. But they don't realize that it's in these last moments of life that their pet needs them most.

Veterinarians ask the owners to be close to the animals until the very end. ′′It's inevitable that they die before you. Don't forget that you were the center of their life. Maybe they were just a part of you. But they are also your family. No matter how hard it is, don't leave them.

Dont let them die in a room with a stranger in a place they dont like. It is very painful for veterinarians to see how pets cannot find their owner during the last minutes of their life. They dont understand why the owner left them. After all, they needed their owner’s consolation.

Veterinarians do everything possible to ensure that animals are not so scared, but they are completely strangers to them. Don't be a coward because it's too painful for you. Think about the pet. Endure this pain for the sake of their sake. Be with them until the end.”

Pampered Pooch Dog Boarding

About Pampered Pooch

For years I worked at a career outside of my home and one of the hardest things I had to do was to leave my loyal, loving companions - my dogs - at home alone. And when we went on vacations I knew the boarding kennels would care for their physical needs but not the personal attention - the hugging and petting that make them feel loved - that my special dogs deserved.

I believed many others felt the same, so eighteen years ago I decided to offer "in home" daycare and boarding. The dogs that come to us share our family life just like our own dogs, which means plenty of love and attention and no kennels. Plus they have a large, fenced-in backyard to run and play in with direct access to the house.
