🇱🇷 Fourth of July is right around the corner. This article gives some good tips on how to prepare for the loud noises 🎆to come! Call us for any medication refills or requests. :)

While fireworks are great July 4th fun for most people, many pets can be terrified and are given calming chews for their stress. Click the link below to find out what happened when two curious pets ingested an entire bottle of 160 calming chews in this month’s edition of Toxin Tails:

Happy First Day of Summer!!

Do you plan on spending lots of time in the sun and great outdoors with your dog? Remember that if they have exposed skin, they can get sunburned. Should you use a human sunscreen on them?
NO!
Most human sunscreens have ingredients that can make your dog ill if they lick it. There is a brand of DOG sunscreen that is labeled as FDA compliant. (Do not use anything on cats unless labeled specifically for them)
Another way to protect your pet would be to use UV protective clothing or to avoid taking your pet outside from 10am - 3pm when the sun is the strongest.

Stay safe out there! 😎 🐕 ☀️ ⛱️

Hot weather means Cane Toads are out and about! 😬😱 Dr Sauer has seen two Cane Toads in her neighborhood in the last two days!

Rinella marina (aka Cane Toad, “Bufo toad”, Marine Toad, Giant Toad) is an introduced species found in south Florida that can cause severe toxicosis in dogs and cats if they lick, mouth, or ingest the toads. The toads secrete a toxin from their parotid skin glands as a defense mechanism when frightened or injured (see second picture - the white material). Signs can include extremely excessive salivation, red gums, rapid breathing, seizures or ataxia, vomiting, hyperthermia, and cardiac problems. The severity of the signs depends on the amount of the toxin secreted and the size of the patient. This can be a rapidly deadly problem.
If you suspect or know that your pet has been exposed to a Cane Toad, immediately wipe out their mouth with a cloth. You can consider rinsing their mouth, but you MUST have the patient’s head and the water stream directed downward so the rinse water is not ingested. Then seek immediate medical attention.

Caffeine can be poisonous!

As students cram for finals, many are no-doubt using caffeine to help keep them alert. What pet lovers may not realize is that caffeine is not only bad for animals, but can lead to death in extreme cases. Find out what happened when an inquisitive canine named Cooper decided to munch down on his owner’s caffeine pills:

Happy Caturday!

Did you know that cats can get arthritis just like dogs can? It can follow injury to a joint or can be the result of age related “wear and tear”. In general, cats are good at masking signs of pain and discomfort. You may see hesitancy to jump, limping, discomfort when picked up or petted in certain areas, or other signs.
There are treatments available to help our furry, feline friends feel fine. These range from supplements to monoclonal antibody injections.
Give us a call to set up an exam if you think your cat might have arthritis.

Do you have a dog that does not like to drink as much water as you think he/she should? Try making gelatin blocks for them! Use unflavored gelatin and fix it as directed but with 50:50 water to diluted chicken broth (or beef broth, tuna juice, etc). After chilling it in a pan, cut the “jello” into blocks and offer them as treats!
Rogan gives Body Armor “Jello” two thumbs up!

Beau is really hopes that Santa will bring some adult teeth for him!

Did you know that puppies develop 28 deciduous (or baby) teeth that feel like 28 needles or razors? Those teeth are replaced with 42 pearly white permanent (or adult) teeth that are mercifully not as sharp starting around 4 months of age. During this time puppies may have temporary bad breath and may even have very minor bleeding of the gums where a baby tooth is getting ready to fall out. The puppies have a need to chew during this time, so make sure you have lots of acceptable chews for them.

It’s time for Holiday Hazards - The Baking Edition!
Baking holiday treats can be a fun activity, but watch out if you have a counter surfing dog! Cookies usually have a high fat content which can lead to unpleasant and messy stomach and intestinal problems if a dog eats them. Add in ingredients such as cocoa powder, espresso powder, chocolate chunks, etc can potentially cause more serious health problems.
Let’s keep everyone healthy and happy and keep the cookies out of reach!

SEMPER PARATUS!

The United States Coast Guard was founded on this date in 1790 on the recommendation of Alexander Hamilton.
Southwest Floridians should be very aware of the USCG’s role in search and rescue (SAR) and disaster relief thanks to their amazing response during and after Hurricane Ian. But the always ready USCG has many missions including:
Defense readiness
Marine safety
AIDS to Navigation
Search and Rescue
Port and waterway security
Drug interdiction
Marine environmental protection
Ice operations
Law enforcement
Illegal/unreported/unregulated fishing
Migrant interdiction

Happy Birthday to the men and women of the USCG!

How was your Toothsday?

This little shark mouthed puppy has a condition called retained deciduous teeth. This is a situation when one or more of the puppy’s deciduous teeth (aka milk teeth or baby teeth) stay in place even though the adult teeth have come in. Normally the baby tooth’s root resorbs and the tooth is pushed out as the adult tooth erupts through the gum line.
Retained teeth can crowd the adult teeth and cause malalignment or can trap bacteria and food leading to gingivitis and periodontal disease.
This puppy has 3 retained baby incisors (first picture) and 2 retained upper baby canines (the curved teeth in the second and third pictures). Gingivitis is already starting where the retained deciduous canine teeth are located.
The solution to this problem is to extract any of the baby teeth that are not coming out on their own.

If you have any questions about this condition, give us a call!

It’s that time of year again. While humans get a lot of enjoyment out of fireworks, many of our pets find them terrifying. Now is the time to prepare for the sound and light shows.

Make sure ALL of your dogs and cats have ID on them (tags on collars and/or microchips). Even completely indoor pets can slip out and run away if they are scared. Keep all dogs on leashes when taken outside for toileting during the fireworks.
Consider what kind of calming aids you can use. Most pets appreciate a sound muffled den in which to retreat. Try placing a crate in a closet with the door propped open and with quilts or multiple beach towels draped over the top and sides. There are scent therapy methods with synthetic pheromones or lavender. Various treats with calming supplements are available. If indicated, anti-anxiety medications are available.
REMEMBER: the time to get ready for firework fear is NOW, not on July 4th!
