FOSTER HOMES DESPERATELY NEEDED FOR LOCAL RESCUES

With space often limited at local shelters, it is the remarkable work done by area rescues that save countless dogs and cats from unhappy endings.

Unlike shelters, animal rescues do not have physical structures/shelters and require housing for all of their pets.

Often underfunded, these rescues rely wholly on individuals willing to agree to take homeless animals into their home and to provide a safe and loving environment for a predetermined period of time or until an adoptive home is found.

While rules and conditions sometimes vary, the rescues generally pay for all food, veterinary care and incidentals.

On occasion, shelters ask for assistance, from foster parents, to house shelter dogs that are struggling in the stressful shelter environment or when the shelter no longer has room to accept animals.

Fostering an animal often proves to be an incredibly rewarding and satisfying activity. In addition to helping an animal to learn social skills or to learn to be around other pets, fostering often saves the lives of animals likely to be euthanized.

Interested in fostering? Do you wish to be the bridge between homeless and home?

CANE TOAD POISONING: FAST AND FATAL

They’re called Cane toads, Bufo toads, Marine toads and, sometimes, Giant Neotropical toads. They are non-native toads found throughout South Florida.

Cane toads were introduced to the South Florida region in the 1930s as a means of controlling agricultural pests in sugar cane.

As we walk our dogs, or release them to run free in our yards, there is little likelihood that we will see a well-camouflaged toad resting in the grass or beneath shrubbery.

Your dog, motivated by prey drive, lunges and grabs hold of the toad. There is little that you can do at this moment.

Cane toads are not protected in Florida except by anti-cruelty law and can be removed from private property and humanely killed year-round. It is important to differentiate between the Cane toad and the Native Southern toad…a toad that is beneficial to our ecosystem.

Captured cane toads may not be relocated and released. If handling Cane toads, wear latex/nitrile gloves and consider protective eyewear.

These toads, when sensing danger or threat, secrete a toxic substance onto its back (Bufotoxin). Once a dog makes contact with this substance, it is quickly ingested/absorbed through the gums/mouth, respiratory system or eyes. Cane toad eggs also contain Bufotoxin and can harm/kill your pet(s).

Depending upon the method of contact the type of toad, the toxin blocks sodium channels in nerves in a way much like anesthesia.

Signs of exposure usually involve a brick-red mucous or increased salivation. They usually occur within minutes of exposure. Your dog will likely begin to paw at his/her mouth and begin to show signs of disorientation, stumbling, loss of balance and, potentially, seizures. Some dogs begin breathing rapidly, vomit and/or have diarrhea.

There is no antidote for these toxins. Treatment involves IMMEDIATELY flushing the dog’s mouth with a large volume of water and bringing the animal to a veterinarian for emergency care. Toxins can cause death within 15 minutes!

OWN A CAT? THEN YOU HAVE BEEN “HEAD-BUNTED.”

Some refer to the behavior as “head-butting.” Others call it “head-bumping.” Veterinarians and animal behavioral experts generally refer to it as “head-bunting,” and, if you own a cat, you have likely shared in this behavior.

Your cat will likely purr first…and then press his/her head against yours in what appears to be a sign of affection. Many experts agree that affection is indeed a component of this behavior, however, those same experts also believe that your cat is marking you as part of their feline family.

Cats have scent glands in many parts of their body…including their face. From these glands, cats excrete pheromones that are used to mark territory and to serve as a sign of acceptance.
