Along with early pregnancy diagnosis for culling reasons, the earlier we ultrasound your cattle, the more accurate we can be for dividing them into calving groups for you. Call today to get on our schedule!

Pregnancy detection is a tool that producers can use to manage cow herd expenses. An open cow continues to incur feed and health expenses until they are marketed. Early pregnancy diagnosis may increase profitability if open cows can be culled earlier.

💥🇺🇸The Fourth of July is fast approaching🇺🇸💥

NOW is the time to speak with your veterinarian about your pets’ fear of fireworks, not on July 3rd! Give us a call to schedule an appointment so we can examine your pet and discuss which medication {if one is needed} will help your pet get comfortably through this holiday.

🔖Now is also a good time to make sure all collars and name tags have the correct identification information on them. They have a better chance at making it home to you if they have proper ID.

Did you know that approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.4 million are cats. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.4 million cats).

This June consider adopting a cat, the rescues are full and kittens just keep coming. If you don't have room for a new pet consider donating to help fund spaying and neutering clinics to keep the stray population down.

Check out our local rescue Paws Animal Rescue they have so many cats looking for their perfect home.

💥GRASS TETANY💥

The last few weeks have provided ample moisture in our area, hopefully leading to lush grass for summer turn out. Now is a great time to be assessing your mineral content (need to have adequate magnesium). We don’t want you to turn out and have to deal with grass tetany! The article below provides great details on what causes grass tetany.

As spring nears and grass begins to turn green, producers are anxious to get cows out to grass. However, cool season predominate areas tend to have lush spring growth which can lead to grass tetany in cows. While there are treatments for cows caught quick enough, prevention is always the best policy...

Branding season is right around the corner! Make sure to brush up on some simple chute side reminders to make those vaccines you are giving work best!

May is a popular grass turnout month in this region and often spring shots are administered. Here are a few chute-side reminders to ensure an effective vaccination protocol.

1️⃣ Maintain equipment:
➡️ Clean syringes before and after each processing day. Use boiling water rather than a disinfectant solution, as a disinfectant residue can impact the efficacy of future products in that syringe.
➡️ Use the right needle. Depending on if cows, calves or bulls are being processed, consider the needle gauge and length that is the most appropriate.
➡️ Change needles often. Needles should, at minimum, be changed every time a syringe is reloaded, and when a needle is bent. To prevent disease transfer, changing every 10 head or so has value. Plus, it keeps the needle sharp!

2️⃣ Read the product label:
➡️ Confirm the product selected is for control of the pathogens you are concerned about.
➡️ Identify the proper dosage and route of administration.
➡️ Most vaccines require two doses and many have a withdrawal time which should be in the vaccination records.

3️⃣ Handle vaccines appropriately:
➡️ Only mix enough modified live vaccine for 30-minute intervals.
➡️ Check expiration dates, and ensure the product was stored properly. Excess heat, sun, or frost exposure can all damage vaccines.
➡️ Utilize a cooler for both vaccines and to store syringes to avoid sudden temperature changes of the vaccine which can diminish efficacy.

4️⃣ Injection sites:
➡️ Administer in the neck with the appropriate route of administration (subcutaneous, intramuscular, etc.)
➡️ Target a 4 inch space between injection sites. For calves, this is difficult and both sides of the neck may need utilized.
➡️ Be aware of wet or muddy hair coats and dull needles. These will increase the likelihood of injection site lesions.

Finally, ❗keep records❗ Include animal ID’s, products administered with serial and lot numbers and withdrawal time, and any other relevant notes. The immune response to all vaccines can be influenced by a variety of factors. Utilize low stress handling and practices that align with BQA values to get the full value of the health investment spring shots entail.

While many of our clients are right in the heart of calving season, it’s not too soon to start thinking about NEXT year’s calving season.

How do we do that? We start with the bulls. It’s very important to make sure that the bulls you are tuning out are going to be able to service the cows and get them bred.

Call us today to get on our schedule for breeding soundness exams for your bulls. After all, it’s better to find a non-fertile bull now, rather than hear us calling the cows open at preg check this fall!

We may be finishing the calving season, but it is never too early to be thinking about the breeding season. With the breeding season comes getting those bulls scheduled for their breeding soundness exam (BSE) and ensuring your bull battery are satisfactory breeders.

Since many of our ranchers are calving now or will be soon, it’s important to pay attention to the details to keep your calves healthy and vigorous. Small things such a mixing colostrum correctly can play an important role.

Are you mixing calf milk replacer correctly? It's important to do it right says Jim Quigley, PhD. For one thing, Quigley says there is a difference between mixing milk replacer powder INTO water to achieve a desired final volume, or mixing it WITH that volume of water. https://loom.ly/ZEw0Exo
