Sue is owned by and was dropped off a couple weeks ago when I was running a test out near him! We were training Saturday evening, when Louie told me Sue has never been in the water. That evening, she found out that water isn’t a bad thing and the rest has been history! Sue is a very well bred Labrador that was raised properly by her owners! I can’t stress this enough, buy a well bred dog to stack the deck in your favor! Raise them right and they’ll love their job. I’m looking forward to watching Sue become the dog for ! She has some big shoes to fill.

Miss Lainey and the rest of these heathens have been working their tails off! We went up and ran the Northern Montezuma HRC test in Mexico a couple weeks ago. It was a great time seeing old friends and meeting new ones. A huge thank you to the landowners, judges, the club, and all of the workers! Also, I’d like to thank my clients for trusting me and allowing me to continue to do what I love!

It’s crucial for all gundogs to be comfortable going long. A lot of times people look at hunt test and field trial dogs and don’t understand why we send our dogs after 200-400 yard marks and blinds. One, they need to be confident in their abilities. And two, it may not happen often, but what happens when you and your buddies or clients sail one across the field? Who’s going to pick it up? That’s what these dogs are built for!

Miss Lainey is my newest raise and train pupy! She’s out of HRCH (one Grand pass) Shooter MH14 x HR Piper SH. She’s currently finishing up obedience and will be running hunt tests this spring and summer. She’s going to make a fine gun dog for the right owner! Contact me for details about Miss Lainey!

This past weekend Zoey and Maggie ran the Black Creek Retriever Club hunt test and both earned another leg toward their JH. Zoey headed home to get ready to chase big Canada geese and divers up in northern NY!

Josie and her owner went and ran their first started tests at the Northern Montezuma Hunting Retriever Club and passed both days!

Congratulations to all the owners! Thank you to the clubs, club members, volunteers, judges, and land owners for putting on these tests!

Gunner is here to become a duck dog! When he first got here, there were some issues with him, but we worked through them! In just over a month he’s turned himself into a retriever! Don’t get me wrong, there’s still work to be done. But, I’m beyond proud of how far this dog has come in such a short time!

In training, you will definitely find yourself at your highest of highs and your lowest of lows, but always remember you’re dealing with a living animal. There is never two dogs the same. We see dogs of similar ages all over social media and get caught up in the fact that their dog is better than the next. Don’t worry about what that guy is doing with his dog, train the dog in front of you and make them better! That’s where the word “program” can get people in trouble. There is no single program, book, dvd, YouTube that will train every single dog. Get out there and put the work in.

It’s Monday, let’s get better this week!

Dog training is a marathon not a sprint. It’s about time we don’t focus on what other dogs are doing and focus on the dog in front of us! There are no cookie cutter training programs, no matter what some of these salesmen say. If you’re training your own dog, find a reliable group, or a trustworthy pro and learn what works best for your dog and your goals!

Rugged River Retrievers is fully booked for gun dogs during the early spring and summer. We are currently booking kennel slots for pre-season tuneups and basic/advanced gundogs starting in August! If you have a dog that’s ready to hunt, but life gets in the way of training, you have a puppy now that you want to lay a solid foundation before you take them on that cherished first hunt, or you have an older dog that you want to make better before that big duck trip you and your buddies have planned, don’t hesitate to reach out!
