We hope this message finds you and your pets safe and healthy. As Suffolk county has now become a Covid-19 hotspot, we are now instituting stricter precautions at the animal hospital. When you make an appointment, you will be instructed to wait outside our door. Only your pet will be allowed inside. Dr. Luckow will speak with you before and after the procedures are performed. If you need any medications or prescription foods, please call ahead so it can be waiting for you. A credit card payment in advance will help us to expedite your order. We will bring the order to you. Appointments and surgery are available, but our hours may fluctuate . Thank you for your patience and understanding. Have a happy Passover and Easter.

03/20/2020

UPDATE. Veterinary hospitals are deemed an essential service. We are trying to maintain our normal schedule with modifications as this crisis continues. In an effort to protect you and us, we are allowing one owner with their pet(s) into the hospital at a time. We will let the next patient know when they should enter the building so we can eliminate crowding. Procedures that don’t require examinations like heartworm tests, Lyme or Leptospirosis vaccines will be done in the back without the owner so we can move you in and out faster. If you need Dr. Luckow for a full examination, whether it be a yearly or for an illness, our regularly disinfected exam rooms will be used.
If you need your pets medications, or prescription food, please call ahead so we can have them waiting for you. If you choose, paying in advance with a credit card will allow my staff to meet you at the door so you don’t have to enter the building.
We are trying not to schedule patients one after the other but we can’t always anticipate what each pets needs are. If it gets crowded by our door, please respect each other’s space. We will get you in as soon as possible.
We are as new to this as you, life as we all knew it has changed and we will do our best to stay available to you and your pets. Be safe. Dr. L

Hope that you and your pets are safe and having a happy holiday.

We at the hospital are as concerned about the current Covid-19 epidemic as all of you. At the present time, the office will maintain our normal schedule for your pets needs. In an effort to minimize contact with others, we will be spacing the appointments. At this point in time, there are no reports of pet transmission of this virus to humans worldwide. However, an infected person coughing or sneezing on a pet can possibly lead to surface exposure. Practice good hygiene and don’t hesitate to us if a problem arises. We will keep you updated if the situation changes. Be safe. Dr. L

08/29/2019

Due to staffing problems we are temporarily changing our office hours. The office will close at 2PM on Tuesday and Friday . We will still be available Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8-5 and Saturday from 8-12. Have a great holiday weekend.

There is a new type of peanut butter ( and other nut butters) being sold with less sugar, but now includes xylitol as a sweetener. This is the ingredient in sugarless gum that can be deadly to dogs. Pet owners sometimes use peanut butter as a dog treat, or to fill a Kong, or to disguise medications. Xylitol, when ingested by a dog causes a rapid increase in Insulin levels leading to hypoglycemia ( low blood sugar), collapse, possible seizure,or even death. Please read the label of ingredients on these products so you can avoid a potential problem for your best friend.

Meet Gus, who until yesterday was a very happy French Bulldog. Gus got an early start on his Christmas buffet of children's toys, rubber bands and hair scrunchies. I removed these items from both his stomach and his intestines. He is recovering nicely. Please be careful, you'd be amazed at the things your pet will eat! Have a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. The office is open except on the holiday. Dr.L

We had a real tragedy today at the hospital. A family brought in a 2 year old English Bulldog who collapsed and died this morning while on a walk. They didn't realize that although it wasn't the hottest day, the humidity was just unbearable. Combine these environmental conditions with a short nosed breed of dog and it doesn't take much of a walk to stress the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. This is not exclusively a short nose breed issue. All dogs in this weather should spend limited time outside and plenty of time in a cool house. Please be careful out there, these people were devastated and we were too.

As I told many of you, last night I attended a lecture on Canine Flu. Until recently it was found in the Midwest so we just watched and waited to see if it would come East. In the past few weeks there have been reported cases in Brooklyn and now Manhattan. With the summer approaching and increased travel it is anticipated that Long Island is next. The vaccine protects against the 2 recognized strains of flu now affecting dogs. Signs of this disease include elevated body temperature 106-107 degrees, coughing, sneezing, nasal and ocular discharges, possibly leading to pneumonia and in 5-7% of the dogs, death. The dogs at highest risk are the "social" dogs who go to parks, grooming parlors, boarding kennels and pet shop visits. As of this time the vaccine is not required, but that could change as the summer progresses. The series is 2 inoculations, 2 weeks apart. Immunity does not take place until 2 weeks after the second shot, so it takes a month from the first shot until your dog is protected. We have just received a small shipment of vaccine so if you think this is something you want your dog to have give us a call. As new information becomes available I will keep you posted. Please feel free to call the office with any questions you may have. Dr.L

Thank you Dr. Luckow & Carrie for your kindness and compassion as Chris and I said goodbye to our beloved Tyson today. I am grateful for the respect and dignity you showed him in his final minutes and for allowing me to be close by and for the loving care you provided him during his 15 years.
Here we go Again...about to hit the news cycle.

“FAMILY DOG TESTS POSITIVE”- MOSTLY FALSE, here is why: (resource: Cornell school of Veterinary Medicine).

1. in order for a pet, or any other animal to get COVID19, the virus would have to mutate back, from a People virus to Animal Virus. There is zero signs of this virulent virus has gone thru any changes.
2. the family just went thru recovery of COVID19, therefore the dog’s surface can have virus upon it, do licks fur, Test is contaminated. Besides, taking “ORAL swabs” (as the article says), from animals who groom themselves , in a home with Positive Humans, makes ZERO sense...you get the idea.
3. The wife and husband are BOTH Ohio ER doctors, exposed to virus in the air, making it almost 100% the source of the Family’s COVID19 exposure.
4. The tests are 60-80% accurate for humans, no less animals.
5. The symptoms of the dog, are most likely due to some other reason, “no appetite and tiredness”, could be a symptom of ANY dog ailment. (You have People dr’s assigning a People diagnosis to an Animal...they should stick to their day jobs. They have enough to keep them busy).
