Ma*****na 💨 ⁣

Sooooo your dog ate w**d.⁣

First, let’s get this out of the way right off the bat. Your vet does 👏🏼 not 👏🏼care.⁣

Second. We ALWAYS know. 😏⁣

There is no sense in denying it. Don’t make up some du***ss story, and stop blaming your neighbors. It’s a whole lot easier and faster to just be upfront about what is going on.⁣

Ma*****na toxicity is extremely common in household pets these days. A tiny amount can cause a whole host of symptoms, and here are the most common:⁣

🌱 Unable to stand/walk in a straight line⁣
🌱 Dribbling urine/having accidents⁣
🌱 Hyperreflexive around the head (flinching HARD when a hand comes toward their face)⁣
🌱 Nausea/drooling/vomiting⁣
🌱 Low heart rate/body temperature⁣
🌱 Overall appearing like they’re high as a kite⁣

Luckily life threatening ma*****na toxicity is rare, and the majority of pets who ingest THC bounce back quickly with a night of hospitalization and fluids, along with lots of treats, a dark room, and some Pink Floyd. 😉⁣

In large amounts ma*****na can cause coma and even death, so seeking veterinary attention is always recommended. Also, I tell owners constantly that if your pet is exhibiting these symptoms and it’s NOT ma*****na, then I’m going to be really worried. So let’s all be honest here, and save yourself some money digging for a diagnosis when we already know what’s going on.⁣

Oh and parents, if you bring your teenager with you to the appointment and your vet asks you about ma*****na? Please take a moment to excuse yourself to the restroom so we can appropriately grill the 17 year old smirking in the corner. You may not know there’s w**d in your house, but I guarantee sweet little Ryan does. 🙃

During our recent Cat Spay/Neuter special, we performed 75 cat neuters and 83 cat spays! This may seem like a lot, but let’s look at the statistical possibilities.

Fun factoid: After 7 years, one female intact cat left to her natural habits, given that all of her offspring remaining intact (not spayed), can lead to more than 420,000 cats.
This may seem like an outrageous number but the math adds up. In reality, this doesn’t really happen due to adoption, predation, disease, and other factors. But using this math, with the spays alone we theoretically prevented 34,800,000 cats.

Fort Scott has an abundance of homeless cats. We hope that we made a little dent in it. Thank you to all that participated and a big thanks to Paws and Claws!! Fort Scott Paws and Claws Animal Shelter

Heed the warnings. Human food is not for your pets.

As much as we love our pets and want to share our holidays with them, please be careful of sharing our holiday foods. We have gathered a "menu" of foods that will cause harm to our pets. Share your hearts, your love, your house and even your beds, but please DO NOT share these human foods with your pets. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

No one likes to think about parasites, but intestinal parasites commonly referred to as worms, are found in many puppies, kittens, adult cats and dogs. Intestinal parasites can be very problematic. Thankfully there are simple treatments to get rid of these pesky parasites and to help keep your pet healthy.
In order to treat intestinal parasites appropriately, your veterinarian will have to determine exactly what kind of parasite your pet has. Some dewormers are also recommended to be used monthly for prevention.

Here is an example below of round worms found in a patient while doing a routine surgery. These worms were so numerous that they caused a foreign body in the intestines and the cat sadly did not survive. Many parasites have the potential to kill your pets.

Give the staff at SEK Veterinary Center a call or stop by the clinic to pick up the appropriate medication or to schedule an appointment to have your pet examined. 620-223-1171

This wouldn’t come as a surprise to some clients, but Dr. Russ is a HUGE Jimmy Buffett fan. Jimmy passed on September 1 and Dr. Russ has a lot of very humorous and nostaligic memories of JB. So we apologize in advance if you hear a ton of Buffett music during your appointment this week.

Some people falsely believe that Kongs are indestructible by dogs. Many veterinarians have surgically pulled pieces of these out from the G.I. system of dogs. This is a photo of my own dog’s Kong. Never leave your dog unsupervised with a toy like this. Deuce did this while I was sitting next to him and I caught it on time. For many pet owners, this would involve thousands of dollars in surgery and possibly death to the animal.

You may see this young man hanging around the clinic. He is Dr. Baxley’s new dog. He needed to be re-homed and Dr. Baxley was lucky enough to get him. He was given the name Hank, but anyone that knows Dr. Russ knows that this was the name of his previous dog. Besides, He doesn’t seem to answer to it. He will keep the name but will be known as Deuce. Please forgive Deuce (and Dr. Russ) for his transgressions. He’s a great pup from a great home.

07/06/2023

Quick friendly note to pet owners, regardless of who your veterinarian is: The Kansas Veterinary Practice Act states that a veterinarian cannot dispense a prescription medicine without a current exam. A current exam is defined as within the last year.
So a yearly exam is required for Flea/Tick/Worm prevention (e.g., Bravecto, Credelio, Interceptor)
, heart medications, seizure medications, or any other medication.
This also applies to food animals. (Cattle, sheep, goats, pigs)
This is law and we abide by it. Please don’t ask us to break the law and please don’t get upset with us when we follow the law. Dr. Baxley will not risk his license for your convenience, I think this is only fair.

06/28/2023

With the summer heating up, remember your pets. Don’t leave outside for long periods, provide walks and playtime in the mornings, and always have fresh water.
Heat stroke can happen quickly and can be deadly.

REMINDER: Now is the time to see your veterinarian about medication for your pet for 4th of July!!

06/21/2023

Does your dog love the outdoors or simply relaxing on the couch? Both indoor and outdoor pets are at risk of developing heartworm disease as well as multiple tick born diseases. These can occur when infected mosquitoes and ticks bite your pet. As a result, an array of symptoms can develop causing serious health consequences for your pet leading to long term effects and possibly death.

Dr. Baxley and the staff at SEK Veterinary Center want to help keep your pets safe and healthy. Call today to schedule your pet’s next visit and mention this post to receive a free screening for both heartworm and tick-borne diseases. At your visit, don’t forget to pick up your flea, tick, and heartworm preventative.

Available now through August or while supplies last. 🐶🐱
