Story time so gather around.
Quite a few years ago, I sat at a table, and felt so out of place. Here I sat with a group of breeders that to this day are some of the best the breeds ever seen and then me. To keep from name dropping, I’ll just say, I didn’t belong in the group, probably never will, and we’ll leave it at that. If the Longhorn World had a Mount Rushmore, a couple of them would be on it.
At this table, two very well known breeders started talking about “swapping” stock, bragging about their herds, and cracking jokes on each other’s private planes. Yup, that’s right, which one’s plane was the nicest. The one breeder said to the other “I wouldn’t sell my herd for a million dollars” the other said back “If I give you a million dollars right now for it, you’re really going to turn that down?” as he reached for his checkbook. This type of conversation went back and forth for a few minutes, until one of them turned to me and said “You want in on this?” I just smiled and said “Y’all left me at the door about an hour ago, a mill is a bit out of my price range”. They just laughed and continued to carry on…a few moments later, one looked me dead in the eye and said “well we’ve got to get you an 80” cow at the sale tomorrow, so you’ll be able to get off the porch”.
Ironically, I had just purchased a young heifer and young cow from this breeder, both were in his cull herds, but they were trophies to me. He knew that and he talked these two up like they were going to be something. That’s just how he was, him and his family, always found a way to make you feel important. I told the table that night “I’m not sure I’ll ever own an 80” cow, let alone buy one tomorrow” That breeder responded “Sure you will, you need a loan?” I came to find out the “loan him” phrase was a thing during the auction. You’ll still hear it from time to time today as well.
Fast forward a few years, we were both kind of right that night. I still haven’t purchased an 80” cow, but that breeder was right, because I did finally get to own one. “Gypsy” pictured here on the right, would surpass the 80” mark a few years ago. Gypsy was the first calf, we ever bred for in our little herd. She wasn’t the first we ever calved, but she was the first planned breeding we ever did. We AI’d her mother, the cow on the left, to JP Rio Grande and out of the 4 we took that year to AI, her mother was the only one that took. We considered it a failure, 1 out of 4, that was just horrible luck. Little did we know, that because she was the only calf that year, what we were able to give her would springboard her potential.
Gypsy would continue to reach expectations we never thought possible when she finally went over the 90” Tip to Tip mark this last weekend. She measured 90 1/8”! Not only did she become our first 80” animal, but now she is our first 90” animal. Looking back at that infamous night, sitting around that table, feeling so out of place, wondering what it would be like to have one of the elite cattle in the breed- well now I know!
Welcome to the 90” club Gypsy!
**This picture is 3 years old, back when Kansas had water, but it’s my favorite picture. This picture has 3 generations of our herds finest in it and I think it’s just perfect**
